Anyone who has worked hotels, retail, food service or customer service has a deep and abiding loathing for 24/7 holiday music.

I used to think, "who the hell listens to all-christmas-all-the-time"?! Then, yesterday, I get into the car with my (14 year old) son, and he immediately band-surfs over to one of these stations.

I wonder how much of the ratings bump is due to those places.

Are those even counted in ratings? And if so, they would have to count them as more than just one `person' wouldn't they? That's actually a good question.

In other news, many businesses with piped-in music tune in to "all-Christmas-all-the-time" stations this time of year.

Not sure. Because places like Walgreens have special stations. They don't just tune into the local Christmas radio. But a lot of other places do. Especially if it's a small business.

This.

What are they doubling? How are radio stations not going the way of newspapers? Do they still have advertisers because it is so cheap? Is it just people who are trapped in their car for 45 min a day?

Even in a car, there are iThings and other MP3 players. Nobody is limited to radio in the car, though a lot of people probably just throw it on by default. A lot of people seem to use them at work, quite a few guys out in the shop have them, and every time the construction workers are adding something on here they have a little radio on.

Yeah, it's called the morning commute. A large portion of America lives this daily.

Why not ask why people still go to movie theaters. Don't they know it's all on the internet?!?

2011-12-06 01:05:46 PM
Stations that switch to all-Christmas formats probably didn't have great ratings to begin with.

2011-12-06 01:05:47 PM
Easy to double your ratings when they're shiat to begin with....

People who find the station often stick around after the holidays and discover a new favorite station.

I did the opposite. 104.5 in Memphis started their Christmas music shiat extra early a few years ago. The station is mediocre to begin with, but there aren't alot options in Memphis radio, so they were on my presets. I took them off to avoid the Christmas crap and never put them back on. I don't regret it. Now I can effortlessly avoid them every year when they decide to start Christmas in August.

Gulper Eel: People who find the station often stick around after the holidays and discover a new favorite station."

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. Um, no.

Well, one of my favorites eases into Christmas music in mid November by allowing requests for it (and they get them, believe it or not), then goes full bore Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving.

I may be a non-believer, but I still find a haunting beauty in a lot of older religious music (this crosses all religions, not just Christianity). The newer stuff really sucks though. Give me Mozart's Unfinished Requiem over "The Supertones"

Favorite religious Christmas music songs are still the version of "Angels we have Heard on High" sang at Christmas and "Carol of the Bells". Secular Christmas songs are Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire and Let It Snow.

//And "These are a few of my favorite things" should not be a Christmas song!

Fark you right in the earworm. That is my #1 all time most hated holiday related song. You are a bad person and you should feel bad.

(The OCD hell of "Carol of the Bells" is #2, pushed higher by the unimaginative advertising demons who keep changing the words to insert into their farking car commercials)

2011-12-06 01:11:37 PM
"If a station consistently does this year after year, it becomes an 'upfront' for advertisers looking to get holiday-minded customers in the final 30 days of Christmas," says Greg Strassell, senior vp programming at CBS Radio. While commercial count doesn't rise, ad rates increase, and sponsorship packages are created.

There is no more meaningful way to honor the birth of our Lord and Savior than to sell ads.

I can't even place that first song for some reason. Now Carol of the Bells should be either the Claymation Christmas version or the Vienna Boy's Choir.

All that tells you is that:

A) No one listens to regular radio anymore
B) Ratings systems are fatally flawed

either/or/both

The bean counters ruined most of radio like they always do when they get near any art form.

4 stations still worth while that aren't under the thumb of clueless suits.

WFMU
WFUV
WBAI
WBGO

I tend to eat at places during this time of year that DONT play Christmas music. Same with shopping, but that gets more and more difficult each year.

Last time I was messing around with my deck I accidentally ripped the reciever wire for the antenna out. However, with a USB and an SD port nothing of value was lost.

/suck it, Xmas music
//and commercial blocks as long as my drive...
