I turned 30 this year. All that slideshow did was tell me that I haven't done much with my life at all compared to these people.

And by that I clearly mean I wish I had more money.

Truth be told there were some people on that list that I was surprised weren't older (Elijah I'm looking at you) but none of it made me feel old.

Meh. I don't see why people are so obsessed with being young. 30 seems a lot like 26 seems a lot like 36 to me (33 now). You couldn't pay me enough to go back to being 18 and stupid again.

I suppose it is no longer easy to party all night, but I don't want to anymore anyway.

I'm vaguely concerned about wanting to have kids still, but I guess if it doesn't work when im finally ready, it doesn't work.

I turned 30 in november. in return my dad bought me a book which was basically titled 'The accomplishments of other people by the time they turned 30'.

If it weren't for the fact that I knew that most of them were dead or older than me, I'd have been depressed. If I have learned anything in my 30 years, it is the awareness that it is better to be alive, accomplishments and self-esteem be damned.

You do have to work with what you have. There are certainly disadvantages to aging, but there are advantages as well.

of course, some people have it really rough... But it seems to me the people who don't spend all their time longing for what they had are happier.

Good year for 1981. I turned 30 this year too.
Kinda odd to think back about how I viewed "30 year olds" when I was younger. The movie "Old School" was on over the weekend. It was huge when I was in college. In it, Luke Wilson says to Vince "I'm 30 years old, I don't wanna start a fraternity". I remember watching it in my early 20's and thinking that these guys were grown men, and seemed way older than I feel now. Just an odd little thing (although he was 32 when it was filmed, still though).

And good to see I'm not alone, as I also feel like a complete failure now, despite having a career, great marriage, etc.

Dragonduck: the vast majority of these people look a LOT better than they did 5-10 years ago.

The older I get, the more I'm starting to realize that 30-45-ish is the real prime of a person's life. In your 20's, you're not fully developed, you're not 'cultured' or well-read. You have no experience. And you look like a kid that's trying to act like an adult.
In your 30's, you have a firm grasp on yourself as a person, your life, your career, etc. And physically you have matured to how "you" are supposed to look.
I was always a skinny kid. When I hit about 22 though, my metabolism changed and I was tubby. However a couple years ago I finally got a hold on it (because I spent my 20's partying like an idiot), and now my weight's back down, and I'm in better shape than most people I work with. And I'm infinitely more satisfied with myself as a whole now than I ever have been. Just seems like this time of our life is when the real 'fun' starts.
Of course... we don't have kids yet...

/Serena Williams was a surprise, I thought she would be about 45 by now. She looks at least that. Gah...

I don't know. I work in youth ministry. Which basically means I get paid to be the most mature kid in the room. I look back and think, I'm behaving like I'm still 25 but at some point I have to grow up.

Then part of me says 'eff growing up, I'm still enjoying life.' I don't think we ever really 'grow up,' moreso I think we give up/give in and let ourselves get saddled with what everyone else tells us we need to be doing.

I know I don't have all the money a lot of those people have, but I've probably kept more kids from suicide/drugs/self-abuse. It ain't flashy, but I'll take it.

You are only as young as you feel

I would also say "You are only as young as you act" as well.

Sure, I am mature in some aspects, but I still play video games, I still watch cartoons, still goof off.

Just because I have adult responsibilities like a job and a family doesn't mean I have to do "adult approved activities" only.

A lot of folks feel that way at some point in the cushy first world where we're constantly bombarded by people who are extreme endpoints of success, often due to considerable amounts of luck. There's a lot of unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves, at least those of us who aren't happy sitting home playing MW3 at the end of an 8 hour day of nonsensical working.

The only remedy when you feel that way is to get off your ass and do something that makes you feel like you're trying.

/and keep in mind that most folks at your age are getting married and having kids because it's "what people do", not because they necessarily are happier than you are
