I wish the Beatles had ever written something as catchy as Kei$ha's Tik-Tok.
The Beatles are all Yesterday and Michelle and Hand holding crap. ZZZzzz
I'd love to see John Lennon down some Jack Daniels and brush his teeth with it. That's hardcore

If it helps I don't know what Ke$sha is and I've never heard of that song or album so I was not one of the purchasers.

I wasn't aware that the Beatles sold a large number of singles. I had thought their full albums were the big sellers.

You know, back when an album had a whole slew of decent songs and not just one or two that were made for commercialism.

Good point and there's also that Candle In The Wind '97 also sold more copies than any Beatles single, but it was just a flash in the pan whose popularity was spurred by a recent even that people were still emotional about.

It's somehow cool to attack the Beatles now?

Nearly every band since the 60s has pretty much just copied them. At least when they made their music, it was fresh.

The Beatles were the first and last interesting rock and roll act.

I'd heard of the name Ke$sha before but could not put a song to the name so I went to you tube to listen to 'Tic-Tok'

You're telling me people paid money to buy this song? Really? I can't believe people would listen to this even if they were PAID.

Great Gnu that sucked. It's abysmal.

As a guy born toward the end of the whole Boomer thing, I completely agree. I'm sick of having to explain to people that as a 56 year old music lover it isn't mandatory that I consider the Beatles to be gods.

The Onion is prophetic: I wasn't aware that the Beatles sold a large number of singles. I had thought their full albums were the big sellers.

Same with Led Zep. (Still the best band evar, IMHO.)

Also, it says how many had a Number 1 single. How many #2-10?

As for Glee: It's easy to have most songs chart when you're just covering other people's songs that have charted.

BTW, am I the only one who didn't read the text the first time through? "No, yes, yes, yes, no, yes, God yes, bathe her and bring her to my room... oh, the rest just ruin it."

NetOwl: It's somehow cool to attack the Beatles now?

Yep, completely fresh. They weren't taking anything that had already been done by someone else, unless that somebody was Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, or a slew of soul musicians. And all those 60s bands copied them! The Monkees, the Turtles, and any number of other VERY memorable bands. Pretty much the only bands who DIDN'T copy them were the Doors, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd...

Here's the thing: it's not so much that it's cool to attack them. It's just that people like YOU act like they are the end-all be-all of rock n roll music, and it's just not the truth. They had some great tunes, without a doubt. But they're a drop in the bucket, and people act like they're gods. Honestly, if you want to get right down to who REALLY changed the face of music, I would personally go with Chuck Berry. I think he was someone who ACTUALLY did things no one else had done, and although his music (like ALL music) was derivative of what came before it, it took a pretty goddamned big step forward. Him and the Ramones.

Okay, so out of curiosity, I checked out Ke$ha. You know what? Not terrible.

The Beatles are probably my favorite artists, but it's kinda apples and oranges. Listening to a few Ke$ha songs, that's probably some of the best "that kind of music" I've heard. If you don't like her, chances are you probably don't like that genre of music. If you don't like her, but you DO like that genre of pop, I'd be genuinely curious to hear some examples of better quality music.

Meh, the Beatles were as commercial as anyone. Just because its a generation removed from us doesn't mean they weren't a pop music band.

oh yeah? when would that be, exactly?
A full album of decent songs was the exception "back when" -
need I remind you of "octopus' garden" or "yellow submarine"?????
Or their horrendous versions of "Anna" or "Mr. Moonlight"?

Furthermore - records were at least as commercial in the past (if not more so) - when there was a giant record company to feed. Who cares if you've got one hit - load it up with filler and sell it to the kids. At least now artists can release records on their own without having to pay off (or placate) a bloated record company bureaucracy. It's going to be rare that a band gets as big as the Beatles these days, sure - but we at least have more to choose from.

As to the assertion that every band alive today has copied from the Beatles - yes, sure, of course they have, solely by being alive. You can't help be influenced by what you hear, good or bad. Now - would music be different today if the Beatles didn't exist? I say maybe, but not by much. People would have still made music. The post-war restlessness in Britain that gave rise to the Beatles sound (and culture) wasn't affecting just those four (to six) guys - it affected everyone. Popular music would have happily gone along its merry way with or without the damn Beatles. To opine otherwise is simply ridiculous. (I'd say utter bullshirt but I'm trying to keep a tiny bit of decency her. I like you guys. )

Next - I'm not sure what that list above proves (the one including the Beatles, Norah Jones, Eminem, Britney, Linkin Park, N'Sync, etc) other than the Beatles in the 2000's remained at the top of a heap of interchangeable aural dung that will fade into obscurity (as one earlier poster pointed out) as the boomers begin to die off and their massive trailing wake of disposable income fueled pop-culture becomes no more than a quiet ripple.

Music will still exist, however, and it will go forward and sideways and even backwards as the availability of older recordings becomes universal and free. That should be obvious to anyone who's walked into a record store in the past ten years, or has turned on a college radio station (RIP KUSF). We're no longer tied to a linear progression of pop music (that never really existed in the first place, really), and my bet is that some of the best music is still to come. (with the exception of that irritating twee ukulele fad)

And finally, after interviewing some half-dozen folks of the boomer generation who admittedly came of age or were drafted before the summer of love, they universally (all five of them) agreed that at the time, the Beatles were what you listened to if A) you were a girl or B)wanted to impress some girl. Otherwise it was the Stones or the Kinks.

I have nothing further to add your honor. The prosecution rests due to fatigue and alcoholic stupor.

(parenthetically yours, gb)

ACTUALLY... back in the day artists sold a lot of singles, thats where the whole notion of singles and singles charts came from. They would release albums on 12" LPs and release a few songs from those individually (well, with a B side) on 7" 45s. It was also much easier for radio stations to deal with singles than whole albums, since you dont have to skip around to find the song you wanna play. That went on until the popularity of vinyl waned, but the tradition continued. For whatever reason actual single releases became somewhat uncommon with CDs, but obviously are popular again with MP3s.

The Beatles wrote some great music but it was George Martin who turned the Beatles into the sonic pioneers they became.
