2001-11-07 12:06:28 AM
I'd let Donny do me in the ass if he was all tough with me like he is with repoters.

Donny Rumsfeld is coo'

2001-11-07 12:13:34 AM
These new gradiated tags are too hard to read.

2001-11-07 12:22:33 AM
"All those strapping firefighters with ashes and scratches on their faces, dirty uniforms and sweaty brows are just downright sexy,"

YEAH BABY YEAH

2001-11-07 12:23:14 AM
Cool! Looks like Drew's re-doing all the tags now. I can't wait to see the new improved b00bies tag.

2001-11-07 12:27:14 AM
nah, Boobies is fine the way it is. I'm not changing it. Aeonite, you whine about the new tags too much :)

2001-11-07 12:29:06 AM
I don't know about that dude, but I would like to discuss foriegn policy with Tony Blair.
Va Va VOOM!

I am not the only one whining about the new tags.

2001-11-07 12:40:11 AM
I'm not sure Aeonite, but I think you were whining there ;)

2001-11-07 12:48:33 AM
I am not whining. I'm all for new graphics and tags. I think the most recent batch are detracting from the appearance and purpose of Fark. They are:

1. Harder to read.
2. Less easily identifiable.
3. Animated, in some cases, which is farking annoying.
4. Larger in size, which is increasing bandwidth usage (albeit in an admittedly small way).

I am not saying this because I did the original tags. I am not saying this because I don't like Jaxomlotus. I think some of the work on his portfolio site is very well done, and I think he's a great web designer. However, I think these tags are ugly.

I'm all for new tags if they're called for. I'm just not for these tags. You don't run black text over the top of a gradiated background like that because you lose contrast and it gets harder to read. This isn't me being whiny, this is me saying that these are poorly designed. This is admittedly an opinion, but it's an opinion that others share. This is change for the sake of change, and that's not a good reason for change.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It wasn't broke. Why is it being fixed?

2001-11-07 12:51:31 AM
This just in - I evidently could nail all of the women in the Rumsfeld sexiness poll.

2001-11-07 12:51:56 AM
i kinda like the new tags

2001-11-07 12:56:52 AM
uh....that's the most *obvious* thing i have seen in a while.

2001-11-07 01:00:45 AM
Aenoite, I did these cause Drew asked. I never offered or felt they needed a change or anything...but he's a friend and I was happy to help. The newsflash was intentionally animated because it is SUPPOSED to be distracting (it's purpose was specifically for 9/11 type stories, though it is being overused). The video tag is animated in a much less distracting way because video is animated. It gets the point across. And the audio is animated because it's a cousin of the video tag. Twatever. We're arguing over 33 bytes of data. Kinda silly, no?

2001-11-07 01:06:02 AM
Change makes people uneasy. They like the familiar. We are creatures of habit.

Having said that, perhaps the text over the gradient background on the new tags should be reverse-gradient-ed to improve legibility.

Just my $0.05 CAD ($0.02 USD).

2001-11-07 01:06:49 AM
Ooops, make that $0.03 CAD.

;-)

Getting punchy. Must sleep.

2001-11-07 01:07:23 AM
Getting paunchy. Must diet & exercise.

2001-11-07 01:13:50 AM
Rumsfeld is a dweebazoid.

But, I would like to volunteer to help continue the genes of many many of those handsome strappin' firefighters, yessiree. I am serious. Those guys are HOT. Masculine, brave, strong....ooh, I need to turn on the fan in here! I wish there was a firefighters support mail list. I would offer my support! ;) Oh, and I love them for their minds, too.

And shuddup about the tags. They're fine. Go look at some boobies.

2001-11-07 01:24:53 AM
Women find Donald Rumsfeld sexy

Certainly not this woman.

2001-11-07 01:33:19 AM
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

2001-11-07 01:36:54 AM
Firemen are the definition of sexy!

2001-11-07 01:41:34 AM
Man, Fox News will print anything.

2001-11-07 01:49:47 AM
Kady
I'll make that a double here, here, with a side of hell no.

2001-11-07 01:54:00 AM
ummm... i think this deserved a scary tag... seriously people, look at him!

Newsflash I can understand though I think it's annoying. Opinion. The video and audio I can also understand and I think they look cool but (again, opinion), they are more distracting to me than useful. And I'm not saying 33 bytes is the main issue (although if/when we get to 1.5 million hits a day, 33 bytes adds up). I admit these are opinions. But putting aside file size and animation, the two opinons which remain are thus:

1. The gradiation makes the text on the tag difficult to read. I think there are better options, but I don't know exactly what those might be offhand. Certainly reversing the gradiant might help readability. Perhaps a less extreme gradiation might help too, green to light green, instead of green to white by way of yellow.

2. The "Walken/Mojo/Dunst/BigBird/Insertnamehere" tags just bug me. I don't know exactly why. Maybe it's because the Walken one was funny, and the Wheaton one was funny because it was a knockoff of Walken, and after that the joke got old and it was just beating a dead horse. Maybe it's because they're too specific; most tags convey a broad, rather generic concept so as to encompass many things, but these are about specific people.

For the record, I'm only continuing this line of discussion here because I can't immediately think of a better place to do so. #fark is one possibility. Email is another. Since this is decidedly off topic this will be my last post on the matter here. I'd be more than happy to take it elsewhere.

There's been ongoing discussion about other optimization issues anyway, so perhaps we should try to pool efforts into a larger, more organized effort to revamp things. Hit me up in email or on IRC if you think that might be worthwhile.

THIS JUST IN: Girls think supporting President Bush is sexy

manly men are in demand

Gee, they say this like it's something new...

Tag discussion to forum please.

2001-11-07 02:31:56 AM
Ick. Forum. Don't get me started on Forum.

Moot point. Convo ended.

On topic: I think Donald Rumsfeld is sexy too. Rowr.

Rear Admiral Stufflebeem. Manly Man. Something's not right here.

2001-11-07 02:52:47 AM
Okay, my two cents on the tags... I like the new ones. I don't see how they're slightly harder to read, but that's me. The old ones look rather plain. They work fine, but I think the new ones make the page look a little nicer overall. I think they're also easier to tell apart at a glance. I read through all the headlines anyway, but if I'm looking for a story I read earlier, it makes it quite easy to scan through and find one I'm looking for again. The personality tags look great, though I do question the ones that were picked. I suggested a Shatner tag once, and I still think we need a Campbell tag. Wheaton I'm fairly indifferent to, but liking a lot more as I get to know him a little better from reading his stuff on the web. Dunst and Mojo don't seem necessary, but it's Drew's baby, so I have no problem with what he picks. He summed it up pretty well in his response to me... Something along the lines of "I hate Shatner, so it ain't happening." We only get to enjoy this site because of his generosity, so show a little respect. *grin* As far as bandwidth goes, if it were an issue, he wouldn't allow it. Besides, the alternative banners take up a lot more bandwidth than a few tags, I would think. (Not sure though. Just guessing.) On a final note, does anyone else here think that we could use a beer tag, or a Domo-kun one? :)

2001-11-07 02:56:33 AM
Consider the source. Foxnews is a proto-fascist bullhorn and Rumsfeld looks like a mummified corpse.

2001-11-07 03:09:41 AM
um....no we don't. eeeee-eww.

I don't find it at all hard to believe that women find Rumsfeld sexy. Not that I am one, but my tastes are pretty odd in that I find Kevin Spacey and Nigel Bennett extremely nummy and they are classically handsome. Maybe it's the way that these guys (to me) exude qualities. Maybe it's that Nigel Bennett played LaCroix (the hottest vampire on tv...in my estimation), and the character was well, forceful and a tad overprotective of people he loved.

It must be the facade that some people/or characters present to women...

Okay and the firemen too. Damnit, they are hot!

D'oh!

make that the actors I mentioned are *not* classically handsome. I should re-read before I post...

2001-11-07 03:53:58 AM
Mac Nigel Bennett was HOT.
But take a look at Rumsfeld. He is not. He has that 'missionary only' look about him, plus he is rather grandfatherly. Just doesn't do it for me. Plus, call me cynical, but I don't feel more 'protected' with him around. Unless by protected I meant that I wanted to be kept in a straight jacket to avoid hurting myself. I don't like his policies.

2001-11-07 04:21:23 AM
"He has that 'missionary only' look" -- Ouch!

Of course, there's more than a few M.O. women out there...
Rumsfeld has a "Large and in-charge" mode he goes in to on occasion. Quite manly, I can see where some women would find it appealing.

Of course Camilla Paglia has been harping on this subject for years. I can hear her chortling about this all the way from here...

2001-11-07 06:40:25 AM
Fox News...you're better off getting info from the National Enquirer. I'm glad to see that people are not trivializing the events of Sept. 11th, or taking the heroism of brave firefighters and cheapening it for the sake of sleaze.

As for Rumsfeld...yeah, he's a sex symbol. So is Estelle Getty. And George Burns. And King Tut's mummified remains.

2001-11-07 07:36:31 AM
A totally stupid news article. I cannot believe they wasted space on that.

2001-11-07 07:49:23 AM
Mme. I met Vin Diesel at the premiere of Pitch Black. REally nice guy. Whereas the other (B) actors stormed out the second the movie was over, he stayed and talked/joked around with us journalists for a half an hour. Class!

2001-11-07 07:55:09 AM
It rather seems women are attracted to the IDEA of men going through hell (like the NYFD), but I don't believe they'd actually want that stress in their lives -- romantic as it might seem from afar.

And my generalization for the day:

When men fantasize about women, they REALLY do want to turn it into reality.

Women tend to enjoy the idea of the romanticism rather than the reality.

But remember what a formerly powerful man once said: "Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac."

2001-11-07 08:28:05 AM
Marty!

2001-11-07 08:29:40 AM
Government officials have been called the new celebrities in the post-Sept. 11 world, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld tops the list of hunks. The silver-haired 69-year-old might seem a little senior to be a sex symbol, but he has groupies gushing like 'N Sync fans

Proving only that horny middle-aged woman are morons.

2001-11-07 08:29:51 AM
Don Knotts is getting hopeful. His stock is skyrocketing.

2001-11-07 08:31:36 AM
If people get this pent up about the damn tags, it's time to go find a life. I've got no trouble reading them. They add more color.

Since this is supposed to be about Donny-boy: If he's sexy. Damn I am stud of the freakin' year. Hope to all of man-kind.
