First they fall behind the Chinese in PC sales, now this?

Ballmer must have some naughty pics of Michael Dell or something because Dell seems to be going "all-in" on Windows 8.

No online knowledgebase exists to service the android, therefor Dell cannot technically support it. Maybe in a few years when the users put together a good KB, dell will pick it back up.

Windows 8 looks like the best initial OS they have had in a long damn time, if that means anything.

From what I have seen it will have a lot of seamless intergration with PC to tablet/phone and if you have a TV that is either connected to the network or has a port for a wireless then you can stream from tablet/phone.

Yeah, it does look decent, however....I don't see corporate users jumping on it. At least anytime soon. NOT every corporation needs or wants their employees to use tablets. Additionally, they would have to figure out a pretty good reason for their corporate users to jump over to WinPhone7(8).*

* considering that many companies are letting their employees choose to avoid IRS audits of "business" use vs. personal use, it's easier to reimburse employees via a flat fee rather than figuring out each month how much the employee needs to pay back....

Dell what, now?

What's the point of service contracts in this business, anyway? If you offer honest prices, expert customer service and outstanding technical specs, folks will stay with you, even month to month, because they think you give them good value for the money.
As they are, contracts are just a sado-masochistic stunt. "If you really loved me, you'd let me do it to you."

/one reason I don't have a cell phone.

DoD just announced that the Dell Streak 5 smartphone is the *only* DoD-authorized smartphone... because of its multiple backdoors.

Because they sell $600 devices for $200. They wouldn't do that if they couldn't be absolutely sure that you would stay with them. This way, they are guaranteed your business for a year and people who might not be able to afford to spend $600 on a phone or tablet can get one anyway.

/contract with Sprint
//had my own phone I bought from some dude; they made me sign a contract anyway
///I get my first upgrade whenever I want

When was the last time Dell had a successful product launch?

FTA: The fadeout of the 7-inch Streak follows the disappearance of the 5-inch Streak in August, when it failed to corner (read: create) the 5-inch tablet market.

A 5" tablet? I have a 4.3" "tablet." It's called my phone.

I've looked at tablet devices, but currently need a new laptop.

Right now, if I went for a tablet, it would probably be the Nook Color or Nook Tablet and then root the thing. Though the Toshiba tablet is tempting...

I received a Kindle Fire as a corporate X-mas gift last evening. Played with it for a couple of hours, and I'm pretty impressed. Very nice shopping / content consumption device for $200.

I've owned an iPad since they came out, and while I prefer it to the Fire, I have no doubt that Amazon is going to sell a ton of these tablets. The rest of the android tablets... not so much. To me, it basically breaks down like this:

Person #1: I want the best tablet on the market. I'm not upset at spending $500. {looks around at the iPad, Galaxy, Xoom, Toshiba, etc}... yeah, they're all the same price... I'll take the iPad with all the accessories, apps, support, etc.

Person #2: I want an inexpensive tablet to watch movies, play games, and surf the web on the couch {looks at the Fire and all of the other crappy chinese knockoffs}... yeah, I'll be taking the Fire since I know Amazon is going to support it, and its stupid easy to get music and videos on it, and it actually works really well.

Person #3: I want an e-reader. {looks at the kindles, nooks, etc} I'm either going for a dedicated reader, and will drop $79-130 for a regular kindle, or simply upgrade to the Fire. Nook looks ok, but Amazon has much better media offerings, and a history of good support.

Unless someone else comes up with as an attractive ecosystem as iTunes or Amazon, I see all the other competition being DOA.

and when people get into the tablet debates I always point to the fact that there is no way the iPod, iPhone or iPad would have been as successful as they are if Apple didn't first decide the spend mone yon the infrastructure behind the scenes and create a central area for artists, etc.

MP3s existed wayyy before the iPod; but going through the "channels" to download it or "ripping" everything got too confusing for the majority.

Amazon has the book thing down; and more and more casual people are realizing the app thing is for kids and up to like 30something. After that demographic it's basically e-reading. My parents don't give a damn about apps; they're trying to figure out if they'll want to read books and buy a lot or just keep using the library's convenience.

the in-laws went kindle because they didn't need apps and "games" either; just wanted an e-reader since retirement occurred and more and more books were being read.

After a while, you've downloaded all the apps you actually want to use and need to use and end up with a stagnant device.

Back to the infrastructure I was talking about before i went ADD (it's early on a Tuesday)
It's the same thing that helped Sony win the NextGen war with the PSOne. they gathered up publishers left and right and committed them to exclusives. Psygnosis, Squaresoft, SingleTrac, etc.

Where am i.

Zune, the media service not the ugly hardware, is actually fairly comparable to iTunes. MS is really the only force left to muscle its way in. They have a media service ready to go. They can also integrate with the whole XBox Live userbase and if they're smart they'll make it tie into the Win7 and Win8 PCs for content sharing.

Sony also has a user base, but they don't really have a media store and they earned a lot of ill will with their whole DRM rootkit crap.

Yeah, MS has a shot, but it will be interesting to see if the market responds. Does MS decides to go with its own hardware (which I'm guessing it won't, but who know?), or depend on HTC, Nokia, Samsung, etc? I really like WP7, but it isn't making a dent in the iOS / Android marketshare numbers, so I'm not really hopeful that Win8 is going to disrupt the emerging tablet landscape.

Sadly, MS is probably going to be in the "what could have been" segment of the mobile arena.

The legacy PC OEMs will line up on the Microsoft side with Windows 8. The consumer products companies will align with Android. It will be a bloodbath. Lots of opportunity here.
