"If she's suggesting that she's going to use materials that she developed when she was on the ethics committee, that is a fundamental violation of the rules of the House, and I would hope that members would immediately file charges against her the second she does it," the candidate told reporters in New York Monday.

hmm....two people I don't like are about to get into a big slap fight.

my work here is done.

Haha, file charges? On what grounds?

"If she's suggesting that she's going to use materials that she developed when she was on the ethics committee, that is a fundamental violation of the rules of the House, and I would hope that members would immediately file charges against her the second she does it,"

So anything the House finds in an investigation is illegal to release?

GAT_00: So anything the House finds in an investigation is illegal to release?

ethics committee work product is supposed to be confidential. the final report is public domain, but what goes on behind closed doors is supposed to stay off the evening news.

that said, both parties have been known to occasionally abuse the process for strategic gain.

SHE doesn't have to. Remember, thanks to the Roberts Court, those independent groups and SuperPACs can do whatever they damn well please, using money from any source they want.

Why do I have the feeling that within a day, someone will post evidence that Newt released House investigation materials when he was speaker?

I read in another thread that the final report of the committee is already part of the public domain and has been posted online. Can she be sued for providing the link?

I hope Pelosi does it - dump all those ethics committee investigation reports and data into public domain. that'd be AWESOME!

of course, the GOP would retaliate and dump whatever they've got on the Democrats into the public domain. which would be AWESOME!

nah. Newt isn't worried about the final report - that's the clean and sanitized crap they produce for the media and voters. nothing of any substance ever makes it into the final report. that's just par for the course.

What's got Newt worried is that Pelosi kept copies of the real stuff. he's got a lot of skeletons in his closet. dirty deals, influence peddling, all kinds of bad news could be in those files. things that could really torpedo Newt's chances of gaining the GOP nomination. he doesn't want that stuff getting out to the public.

I couldn't agree more. Want to air some dirty laundry? Great, lets do this shiat equal-opportunity-like. Release it all. As a Dem, I am under no illusions that corruption is a Republican-only phenomenon. They usually tend to be more blatant and unapologetic about it, but I'm sure the Dems have some very interesting information that they'd rather see forgotten as well. I'd like to know what that is.

Newt, Newt... you are a republican so therefore you KNOW how the game is played. First you get the headline THEN you print the apology/retraction which gets 2 column inched in the back of the paper next to the coupons for toilet paper

You my dear Newt, about about to get more head(lines) than you ever imagined.

2011-12-05 09:03:52 PM
Gotta give credit to Pelosi. She reminded everyone and got Newt to talk about how he was the subject of an investigation.

Nancy, can't this wait until AFTER Newt is (theoretically) nominated?

Paris1127: Nancy, can't this wait until AFTER Newt is (theoretically) nominated?

why? NONE of the GOP candidates stand a chance against Obama. ok, Romney might have a snowball's chance, but the evangelicals would rather nail him to a cross than see him get the nomination.

No it can't. She obviously knows him really really well. He's an impulsive guy and gets easily riled. She never has to release anything. All she has to do to drive him crazy is drop these little hints. It really doesn't matter whats in those reports. He will do something foolish - as he just did. He should have just chuckled and said something light and disarming. Instead he got all aggro and - in effect - confirmed that Pelosi has dirt on him. This is straight up psychological warfare. Arent you glad youre not married to her?

he'll "file charges"

No he won't. He wouldn't survive the discovery phase and he knows it.

I think it's a bluff myself. All she would really have to do is release a tape or a transcript of the conversation the two of them had *off camera* when he made that commercial with her, showing that he was considerate and cordial to her. Now *THAT* would sink his chances at the GOP nomination, considering how much he's had to back track from it.

I am kind of surprised that this is the Spin they're choosing to go with, though really I'm not - a denial by him would have brought about a similar reaction and maybe kept living for a new cycle or two as people speculated on what she had. By forcing her to say that she was talking about the public record, it kills speculation about any "secrets" she might want to infer she had. It was a smart play by Newt.

Nice job, Newt. Now we know that her charges aren't baseless, and that you indeed have something to hide. Nancy doesn't have to say anything else from now till Election Day; you fell right into her Burmese Newt Trap and impaled yourself on her feces-smeared spikes without a whimper.

2011-12-06 02:48:59 AM
There's so much dirt on Newt already. What could be said that would lower people's opinion of him further?

Granted, some wingnuts haven't forgiven him for making an ad about global warming.. So perhaps it's more secret good deeds for the right to hold against him.

2011-12-06 02:51:10 AM
I think the best hope for the Republican party is for Newt to crash and burn before he wins the nomination, because he sure as heck isn't winning the Presidency. Maybe (in my dreams) the party will finally go, "Ugh, fine! We'll go with Ron Paul," or, "Fine, we'll go with Jon Huntsman!" The first choice would at least be interesting, and the second could actually nab them a win.

Nah, he still hasn't beat the "shell casings hitting the floor" bottom of the septic tank. Silly Newt -- don't you know that confidentiality agreements, ethics, laws, and basic human decency and fair play don't ever apply to Democrats?

They're engaged in a righteous holy war against Republicans, don'tcha know, so absolutely anything's fair, and applauded, in the ensuing witch-hunt and crucifixions.

But let a Republican jaywalk, and the press will excoriate them until they're hounded from office.
