Franklin Mint counterfeits out in 3 seconds prior to auction.

FTA: "Littleton plans to start offering them for sale next year."

Um, yeah, and they'll be offering them for approximately four times what they're worth. If you know anything about coins, you know to NEVER deal with Littleton.

Seems to me they'd be worth about $220,000. Ikes aren't rare.

I was going to say. I have one (Grandma gave it to me) and it's worth a dollar

um... Eisenhower dollars are copper and chrome so why are they worth 5$ each?

They are uncirculated
Do all Ike 1$'s have the moon landing on the back?

Still seems overvalued to me

Just the 1976.

If you have a 1975 though, I'll give you $5 for it. More if it is in better condition.

Wow. That was fascinating. I never thought to put my savings in coins. No, not even gold coins. :)

Five tons of them? I daresay they're worth face price.

Why announce how many you have?

Would that not drop the price due to an overabundance?

Now if you losers don't mind I need to polish my WTC commemorative coins..

No, they all do. The normal design was the Apollo 11 insignia, the 1976 design had the moon as a design element.

"The coins were shipped from the U.S. Mint in Denver during the 1970s to a Federal Reserve bank. A Montana man who does not want his name released bought and stored them in a local bank in Helena, where they sat until recently."

what kind of a person has $220,000 in the mid 70's and uses it to obtain 220,000 dollar coins from a federal reserve bank in the mid and then stashes them for 30+ years.

Sounds like they have mint-fresh coins. Those could be worth more than $1 each.

There were 40% silver Ikes, but they weren't issued to banks in bags like that.

My family and I were traveling, stopped at a rest stop near Indianapolis. A couple of super-old men sitting across the way from us gave my kids one of these Ike $1 coins each before leaving.

They weren't "discovered".
Some guy kept them there for 30 years and knew right where they were.
But don't let my article-reading interrupt the usual bogus Fark headlines.

Dammit man. They were gonna have HOURS of fun searching for the '75, but nooOOOooo you had to spill it.

/offering $20 for a 1975 dime is one of my favorite things to do when I encounter dishonest moneygrabbers at flea markets or ren faires or whatever. Wind 'em up and watch 'em go all day long...

lol, I'd never even thought of that; my 'other ' job is working maintenance at a laundromat, I can have hours of fun at others' expense with that bit of knowledge.

toddalmighty: Seems to me they'd be worth about $220,000. Ikes aren't rare.

There are lots of them out there, but they don't circulate. They are all sitting in peoples desks, dressers and coin jars. The demand far outstrips the supply that is actually available especially in areas near military academies. The military has a tradition of new officers paying the first enlisted person to salute them a dollar coin. I'm not sure about other academies, but at Annapolis it is expected to be an Eisenhower Dollar. Pretty much every bank in Maryland saves up all the Eisenhowers they get throughout the year for graduation at Naval Academy. I worked in a fairly big regional bank in Maryland about 15 years ago in the central vault. We would collect the coins from all the branches in the state, store them in our vault, and ship them to an Annapolis branch every year.

Those sound like Obama dollars.

2011-12-05 09:33:33 PM
So, assuming these are clad dollars minted in Denver since they were bought there and not silver dollars minted in Frisco their copper and nickel melt value is a tidy $0.1985 each. (new window)

The 40% silver ones have a current value of $10.25
(new window)

I have a roll of $20 so I'm going to melt them for the $4 value. It beats cutting electrical high tension copper cables with a Sawzall.

2011-12-05 09:33:34 PM
According to the Inflation Calculator:

"What cost $220000 in 1975 would cost $881380.95 in 2010."

So a litle bit better than inflation. I think collecting non-rare coins is quite often a money loser. You better be doing it for fun.

My current spot worth, $3,893,252.68.

How much are you worth?

2011-12-06 12:29:16 AM
Wow. $220k invested in a no load S&P index fund 30 years ago would be worth about $3 million now. Including after the recent crash.

No wonder this bonehead doesn't want his name released.
