As to why he didn't just dump her, they are "partners" a generic term here in the UK that basically means common-law wife. They have a kid together as well. I hypothesize that this particularly bright bulb may be receiving government benefits, at the very least to support the child. Hiding his partner's body was probably a cunning plan to make sure that gravy train continued to pull into the station.
