. . . huh, that is interesting. I wonder if India is also pushing these countries to hire millions and millions of Indians to screen the content as well, considering that they won't allow technology to do it.

Maybe this is just the plan for future jobs in India.

Congress Party's president, Sonia Gandhi is a dickwig.

Take that India.

FTFA: At the meeting, Mr. Sibal showed attendees a Facebook page that maligned the Congress Party's president, Sonia Gandhi. "This is unacceptable," he told attendees, the executive said, and he asked them to find a way to monitor what is posted on their sites.

I suspect that the real interest is in preventing the people from saying bad things about the government and it's minions. Screw the masses.

Oppressive government is oppressive.

Can you imagine what Fark would look like if someone had to sit through and remove all disparaging comments about politicians?

Hey Indian politicians, get over yourself.

2011-12-05 12:54:55 PM
dwarven politics

2011-12-05 01:06:10 PM
Has anyone asked Mr. Sibal if he might be open to the alternate solution of going out and farking himself?

2011-12-05 01:11:44 PM
Facebook and Google might do it. They'll happily bend over and restrict content for China.

GAT_00: Facebook and Google might do it. They'll happily bend over and restrict content for China.

But they just restrict what those governments tell them to restrict. They don't hire human beings to read every comment on youtube and fb. This guy is just clueless about how the internet works.

How about this: When you sign up for Google, Facebook, or Twitter, if you select "India" as the country in which you live, it will not allow you to have an account.

Problem solved.

/not really, BUT it would be an easy solution, and the providers could say that they did their part

I think that solution might have very unpleasant consequences for the current regime.

It would solve the problem, albeit a "this is why we can't have nice things" solution.

Wait, that's what this guy wants? I figured he just meant screening by keyword.

At the meeting, Mr. Sibal showed attendees a Facebook page that maligned the Congress Party's president, Sonia Gandhi. "This is unacceptable," he told attendees, the executive said, and he asked them to find a way to monitor what is posted on their sites.

Haha, this guy is a dumbass. WAAH someone is mean to us online!

I wonder if he thinks the Internet is also a series of tubes.

2011-12-05 02:03:58 PM
Wait...what percentage of the 1 billion people there have electricity, much less the goddamn internet. First thing I came to was a site purporting "But the sorrowful fact is only 5.3% of people in India use internet."

How about this version:
" India, a country with an internet population of 53 million, asks Google, Facebook and Twitter to screen all of the content posted to their sites. Yes, all of it. No really, they're serious"

Still ridiculous for them to want, but not quite as drastic as a billion

I read that there are 25 million Facebook users in India, and 100 million Google users. So it's a small fraction of the whole population, actually.

What I'm getting at is that draconian measure like this are not going to help the current regime's PR. Really I hope the regime gets all hardliney about this. I don't think they have thought their cunning plan through.

hmmmm
they should send an email to him asking his advice on each edit before they make it.
"is this ok?"
"should we change this?"

after sending him a billion email requests, they can sit back and watch his head explode.

/freedom of speech is so confusing to people.
/I HATE the HATERS, but I will fight to the death for them to maintain their right to post anything that they want. ANYTHING.
/Dont like what they are saying? ignore them, change your privacy setting, stop going to midget porn sites.

This guy should also ask all of the paper manufacturers and card stock manufacturers in India to start screening all printed material, removing all published comments that disparage members of the government.

2011-12-05 03:08:43 PM
Wow, that's really doing a lot of the needful.

2011-12-05 03:09:04 PM
I'll do it, 1 dollar per person, paid in advance.

2011-12-05 03:09:17 PM
Fine, we'll do it!

You're hired as a screening agent!

Due to cutbacks, everyone else in your section is fired

Due to the new IT regulation, you can't be paid overtime though

But get it all done.

India smells weird.

/Well at least I'm not saying New Jersey smells weird.
//Maybe it's Pakistan that smells and India is downwind.
/Nah it is India that smells, from all those brain fart politicians.

2011-12-05 03:14:32 PM
You'd think that these sort of folks who get their panties in a bunch would simply allow the Facebookers to enjoy their bread and circuses, but their egos (and their neuroses) don't allow it to even enter their minds.

/this applies to the US, too

2011-12-05 03:17:52 PM
Uh, and how the hell are they supposed to do that? And they want real humans to do the screening... how many people do you think would be needed to screen 25million Facebook accounts daily? wtf

Not even China does that. And if anyone knows how to censor the internet, it's China.

2011-12-05 03:18:01 PM
hahahaha....

Oh wait, you were serious? Let me laugh even harder.

HAHAHAHAHA

2011-12-05 03:20:00 PM
India, a shiathole of a country where they can barely keep track of themselves.

2011-12-05 03:20:51 PM
India wins either way, either Google has to hire tons of people (most likely from India) to do the screening or they get shut out of the market. This means their own local companies get to take over the market. It's the kind of thing they would cry bloody murder about (protectionist policies) and it's doubtful anyone will hold them accountable. One way or another India will benefit from some kind of kickback or settlement from the companies.

2011-12-05 03:20:55 PM
INDIA Deleted...... Done - next!

2011-12-05 03:21:12 PM
Don't let our politicians get word of this!!!

2011-12-05 03:22:55 PM
India inherited the morality of the Victorian british and haven't let go of it. It's just not proper to say rude things about anyone in public... so... They probably still think telephones should be monitored for curse words.

Also, people might be talking about sex. That won't do either.

The Indian politicians should be ignored, eventually they will get bored with the issue.

2011-12-05 03:24:11 PM
CitizenTed: This guy should also ask all of the paper manufacturers and card stock manufacturers in India to start screening all printed material, removing all published comments that disparage members of the government.

That's actually not as hard. This is closer to asking all paper and pen manufacturers to screen everything written in the country and to destroy anything that the government disapproves of.

2011-12-05 03:27:02 PM
I didn't know the world's largest democracy hated freedom so much. Huh.

The older I get the more I realize that a good chunk of the world, including countries we really see as allies and perhaps even equals, have zero clue what freedom of speech really is.

Is it that much of a foreign concept to so many people? It's quite disturbing.

2011-12-05 03:38:22 PM
joonyer: Is it that much of a foreign concept to so many people? It's quite disturbing.

It's only hanging on by a thread in this country. Why would you expect any better from our allies?
