A decade ago, I managed a screwdriver factory that employed many convicts on work-release for the day. The fifty or so of them would work there day shift and then go back to prison. I wasn't sure it was a great idea putting all those convicts around all those screwdrivers, but they divided themselves up by race and everything seemed to be going swimmingly. The black convicts worked with the Phillips head screwdrivers. The white convicts worked with the Flathead screwdrivers. And the Mexicans, the few of them that there were, cleaned up and maintained the machines. Every day was peaceful until this new white guy, Bernard, joined the crew.

Bernard didn't quite understand prison dynamics and mutual segregation. So, he started working with the black guys on the Phillips head side. This pissed the white guys off. The factory wasn't quite anymore because everyone was shouting threats and epithets across the aisles. I sure as hell wasn't going to get involved, so I mostly stayed up in the manager's office, which had a large window overlooking the floor. Honestly, I wanted Bernard gone just as much as the other guys, but he stubbornly refused to fall in line.

Eventually, one one of the white foot soldiers was assigned to take care of Bernard. He got this other guy to take a pair of sweatpants and hide behind a pillar. I could see all of this from the manager's office, but I thought of it as a bad apple getting weeded out of the barrel. Screwdriver production was down as we headed into the fourth quarter, and all the drama was certainly to blame.

Well, Bernard was walking to the bathroom when the helper with the sweatpants jumped out and wrapped the around his throat. He picked Bernard up by the neck so that his feet were dangling. Then the other guy stuck him several times in the gut with some sort of sharp object, not sure what. After eight or ten stabs in the same spot, the guy worked his hand into the hole in Bernard's abdomen and started pulling out his guts. He pulled out all this orange stuff that looked like salmon eggs, and then he got a hold of his intestines and pulled those out too. This went on until Bernard was pretty much emptied of his innards. The white guy with the sweat pants dropped him and they went back to work. I pretended not to notice until after the shift when I alerted the authorities.

There weren't any witnesses though, and I said that it was most likely an industrial accident and not a murder. Everyone was cool with that, and lo and behold, we made more screwdrivers in the fourth quarter than we'd made all year. It was a Merry Christmas for everyone.
