Just like taking your first toke on a joint, you just can't stop that long slide to horse and coke.

You start killing a couple of civilians for fun during weekends... next thing you know you are giving hand jobs at a rest stop to support your daily civilian killing habit.

Bullets aren't cheap, after all.

It's like Pringles potato chips, but more execution-y.

Maybe if they kind of just eased off. You know, instead of killing civilians today just maim some. Then maybe next week they could just wound some civilians, and later later sternly poke them, maybe even work their way down to using harsh language against civilians. Remember, one day at a time.

Man have I been there. After two-thousand or so it becomes a habit, and you can't just stop cold turkey. Maybe they could try weaning, though. For one month, they only kill 10 people a day. Then just 5 for another month. Before you know it, they'll be down to 0 again.

2011-12-05 03:33:42 PM
Well its their own fault. If the proles would stop being so ungrateful and just learn to embrace their brutal, repressive regime, everything would be perfume and roses.
I mean, look at Best Korea. You don't see them biatching and crying about silly things like 'freedom', and 'human rights'.

No. Smoking causes that.

Nope, you just have to go cold turkey. Of course, you have to actually make the decision that when you wake up that day, you'll stop killing civilians. It does help if you have something to displace that behavior with, though. For me, instead of killing civilians, I started drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, and chewing gum during the day. It sucked for the first couple of weeks, to be sure, but gradually, as the bloodlust left my system, it got better.

One piece of advice for Assad, though: Once you've quit, don't go out drinking with your buddies who still kill civilians, because the temptation to start up again is overwhelming.

Maybe they need to do less intense civilian murdering... like murdering other countries' civilians. It's not as if they've refrained in the past. Heck look at Lebanon.

How many does he have to kill before we send something stronger than a strongly worded letter? Or are we still on "freedom/liberty/democracy is for white christians, not sand negroes"?

Yeah, but once you get up the numbers that Rick Perry has it is harder to stop. Anyone can just kill one young girl, Rick takes out full grown men and the occasional woman.

/234 and counting!

FTFA:

Syria said it had conditionally approved an Arab League peace plan to end eight months of unrest which threatens to drag the country to civil war and activists said at least 60 bodies were taken to hospitals in the central city of Homs on Monday.

Whenever you whine about OWS not having an effect, reread that paragraph to answer why.

Assad can't quit. In his tribal society his clan, once he is, uh, disposed, will be farked.

And the UN will continue printing strongly worded letters as long as Russia is backing Assad due to billions in arms contracts and other investments.

They should switch to ecivs. I haven't killed a single analog civ since I got mine. You can even do it in places analog civ killing isn't allowed!

Alawite is a religious sect. Ba'ath is a political party.

Bashar al Assad is a Ba'athist.

The Ba'ath Party in Syria these days is basically just the political arm of the al-Assad dictatorship (though given it's hereditary nature, maybe we should start calling it a monarchy; I really don't see how it fails to meet any of the criteria, if anything it's even more of a "mono" "Archy" than what our Euro ancestors lived under), so I don't really know how descriptive the Ba'athist label is for him. Sure it's accurate in as much as he is a member of the party, but what does the party do beside supporting the regime? It most certainly isn't the radical pan-Arab agro-communist movement it started as.

Clans and whatnot aren't as big a deal in Syria and Lebanon as they are in other parts of the Arab world, and Syria itself has an atomized, urban culture literally as old as human civilization. You could argue that the Alawite thing works like clan loyalty in a way, but for him to fall the military will have to turn against him, and the military's Alawite, so I don't see any revenge-getting of that nature going down. Some families of importance in the regime might suffer, but that's not necessarily a clan thing; those who get rich by toadying up to dictators always suffer when the regime fails.

Bashar isn't going to step down because, as of this moment, he has no reason to. A significant batch of the population supports him, he still indisputably holds the major towns, the military continues to back him, and then there is his foreign funding. The al-Assad's have held on to Damascus since 1970, and they were big shots in the Ba'aathist party from the very beginning; they've lasted through revolts before, stared down Israel, and lived for decades on our naughty list for their necessary regional alliance with Iran (every other neighbor is a competitor or religious enemy). And of course our own relationship with the regime is pretty murky; while we've frequently been at odds with them, we've also frequently worked with them regarding espionage and terrorism. As fed up with Bashar as we are now, there are still folks working in the CIA and Pentagon who remember those favors they've done us and would hate to see old Cold War buddies getting Mussolini'd from a lamp-post, no matter how badly they deserve it. Barring foreign involvement, the al-Assad's aren't going anywhere.

As long as you hold pretend elections every few years you are not a monarchy.
