What about magnetic ribbons with jingoistic slogans?

They're what make America great!

But if I break off a blue one, will a high school girl give me oral sex?

I prefer real ones, silicone ones make their wrists look fake.

God I wish I had come up with that idea. Put a 1 cent hologram on a 10 cent bracelet, sell it for $5-$10, and tell people it "balances your energy" and let the placebo effect and positive correlation bias make me a mass millionaire.

//my mother hasn't spoken to me since I laughed in her face when she bought me one and expected me to wear it. I gave her a short explanation of placebo and correlation bias, stated that every person that bought these were utter fools, and that I really admire the guy who came up with the bracelets as he's a genius in the land of gullibility.

I've been wearing The Onion's bracelet for nearly 5 years. Mine's green, though.

Like tattoos, colored bracelets announce the IQ of the subject in question before dialog starts making it easier to calibrate vocabulary and expectations.

This was the only thing I was ever hip about, and only because I'm a cycling dork.

I bought one during the Tour in '04 when Armstrong's foundation first starting selling them. For the next few months people kept asking me if I'd been to a concert the night before, etc.

I wore it til it broke pulling the knit nomex wristlet of my bunker coat off after a call on a hot summer day two years later.

CSB.

FWIW, my son's middle school banned "BOOBIES" bracelets because they are...titillating. If they were purely political speech, they'd be protected.

No one's saying it's too late for you to get in on it. You just need to change the hologram design slightly so it's more finely tuned to the natural harmonic frequencies of something-or-other which makes it more efficient at balancing your chi. Maybe pay a guy who's 1/16th Cherokee to endorse them so you can say your bracelets are all Native American-y and shiat.

I've seen the ones for religion. They try to sell them at local festivals. I recall one particular spiel I got from a fairly pretty, if naive, booth-worker:

Her: Would you like to buy one of these $1 "Jesus" bracelets?
Me: No thanks. I don't believe in "god".
Her: Well, still. We use the money for good things like feeding the poor...
Me: No thanks.
Her: Why not?
Me: I don't believe in bracelets.

Working in the Health Care industry, I am bombarded by 4 to 5 of these braclets a year.

Heart Health Awareness
Breast Cancer Awareness

etc, etc, etc.

Ironically, the Healthy Circulatory System Awareness cut off the circulation in my hand.

Eh, when Armstrong's foundation started it, it brought a lot of publicity to their cause. I can't tell you how many people I told about the foundation just because they asked me about the wierd yellow bracelet.

But I agree, after about a bazillion imitations, the real usefulness of them started getting lost.

Try late 70s, Jr high 78-79, girlfriend wore these, picked them up from auto part stores or ace hardware. They were all black o rings.

Memories!!!

I tried on a free white (anti-smoking perhaps?) silicone bracelet that I was given while walking across a college campus. It was too big and fell off as soon as I let my arm hang by my side. I guess philanthropy is only for the big-boned.

There was a story just in the last few weeks that the local company that started the craze (who knows if that is true or just marketing?) had to file for bankruptcy. Oh, and they were originally selling theirs for $35 if I remember correctly.

I thought the reason to wear these was to show support for his cause, not confer some sort of mystical chi correction (don't they sell those lame copper or magnetic bracelets for that?). Methinks you both got general hipsterism confused with specific woo, understandable really.
