coffee cup-shaped warning

I don't like coffee. I would risk killing you and me and a busload of school children rather than drink coffee.

More importantly, I have enough driving experience to know when I'm tired. The car doesn't have to tell me. I don't trust a car that can steer itself when it thinks it knows better than me. I try to imagine what it would do in a typical work zone. Four lane road, then no pavement markings for a while, then little white squares instead of normal dashed lines, then eight sets of dashed lines instead of four because they forgot to wipe out the old ones.

I think the point here is that do you really think that someone that can't tell when they are tired/distracted is going to notice a small coffee cup icon and think, well, think anything?

I doubt it.

i valet part time at dfw airport. i HATE that people have become such incompitent drivers that these cars have TOO MANY safety features! seriously, i'm all for safety, but nothing is safer than someone actually knowing how to operate the huge hunk of metal and plastic they're driving...nothing can compensate for knowledge!

when i'm navigating in and out of spaces and all these beeps get louder and faster, it pisses me off! i KNOW i'm "near" other objects, but i'm well aware the size of the vehicle and know how NOT to hit stuff! and the worst is putting them in reverse and the mirrors angle down to show me the curbs/pavement? FARK YOU! i need to see other cars and people who may be behind me, not a cigarette butt and a curb!

/end rant

i never really quite understood all the separate brands anyway. whatever happened to K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid)? you're right, lincolns are now essentially slightly more high-class versions of fords, but ford has plenty of models that are pushing that anyway, so why not just have high-end, middle, and lower end fords and cut the extra names?

Brand association. People won't buy a $70k Ford (well, most people). Rebadge it as a luxury brand and they will. Same reason Honda has the Acura brand, Toyota the Lexus, etc. The "main brand" is associated with a certain type of car, and people are more reluctant to buy something outside of that expected type.

well, true. but look at mercedes and bmw...neither have a true economy model, but both have an extremely wide range of options, from around $30k on up to around $150k. yet they're all considered luxury, whereas ford, honda, toyota, nissan have economy, mid-range, and luxury with their main names, as well as lincoln, acura, lexus, and infinity offering luxury. acura's a weird one though...not all "luxury", a mix between sport and luxury.

An editorial on overly gadgety modern cars: http://blog.motorists.org/trip-to-mars-or-the-mall/.

TheLopper: They should outlaw billboards.

Ten years ago somebody in the Massachusetts office of the Federal Highway Administration made it his mission to ban animated billboards. A few years later a moving billboard was erected next door to the FHWA office in Cambridge (Broadway near the railroad tracks). I guess that battle was lost.

A countdown to a countdown. I approve of this.

i never really quite understood all the separate brands anyway. whatever happened to K.I.S.S. Hyundai does this actually. The Equus and Genesis are high end sedans that carry no separate marque.

Brand association. People won't buy a $70k Ford (well, most people). Rebadge it as a luxury brand and they will. It's all marketing. The funny thing is the marketing works. People have come to associate certain marques with certain images, stereotypes and expectations. For instance, take Audi, BMW, Mercedes: performance and luxury, German R&D, expensive maintenance. Infiniti: Japanese German fighters that are just Nissans back in Japan. Wannabe Fast and Furious drivers like riced-out G35's as much as they like the Nissan Z and GT-R cars. Lexus: tuxedoed-up Toyotas plus some performance models. Acura: Speedy Hondas with big beaks and wood trim on the inside. Cadillac: Grandpa cars that have taken a turn for the better because of the CTS. Lincoln: A top-trim level Ford for an extra $15,000.

Lincolns are still the one luxury brand glued to the image elderly drivers more than any other though, so I think they'll continue to limp along until Ford needs to cut overhead again, and then Lincoln will finally join Oldsmobile in the ash heap of history.

Why do I get the feeling this will wind up being used against people in a court of law. Government Motors is crap on wheels, and Caddy is nothing more then a shiny turd.
MoPaR is worse. (but they do look NICE)

Ford is the only decent American car maker left. I love my 01 Lincoln Continental (black on black baby) that I picked up in 04. A much better ride then my Audi (more dependable, cheaper to maintain / fix, more comfortable to drive). I also test drove a Benz, BMW, a Caddy and Jag and not only was the Lincoln the best 'drive' of them all.....it was also cheaper to boot.

The best part about driving a Lincoln Continental....I am invisable to police. I have never once been pulled over driving it (and I have had MANY chances what with how I drive).

If you are over 21 and think that Lincoln is just for old men, you are missing out on a LOT of fun. I picked mine up when I was 28 and at first my friends where like "why did you buy an old man car", then I took them for a ride...they now understand completely. :-)

The beauty of the Cougar and most Mercury cars of the late '50s and 1960s is that while they shared chassis and engines with Fords, they shared little or no body panels with their Ford counterparts. By the 1970s through the end, Mercurys became more and more just grille and taillight jobs.

GM used to differentiate the models that shared bodies as well. You could tell a '64 Chevy from a Pontiac, Buick or Olds instantly from a block awayeven when they were built on the same A Body platform (Chevelle, LeMans,Skylark or Cutlass) or B Body (Impala, Catalina, LeSabre or 88). They too lost their individual identity in the '70s culminating with the ultimate insult to brand identity of the 1982 J-Car - Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac J-2000, Buick Skyhawk, Olds Firenza and Cadillac Cimmaron. Thus ended the Sloan Hierarchy.

I currently own a Cadillac. Bought it because it looked nice. Despite being very gently used, it's falling apart. I didn't mean for this to become a GM v Ford thread. In bashing Lincoln, I was trying to point out that Lincoln has lost it's way from a Lincoln should really be. Something like this:

Yep, Ford really seems like they lost the high end. You can say what you want about GM, and there is a lot to say, but Mecury/Lincoln really gave a lot of ground to Buick/Caddy in recent years.

I really wish they would have put the Continental concept car into production...
