Well, she should be banned. Servers make very little money for the amount of work they do and they deserve a tip.

Oh, whatever. Servers don't work any harder than lots of other people. Do you tip a secretary when she makes copies for you? Do you tip police men? Do you tip schoolteachers?

Well, let's be fair now. Servers are paid well below minimum wage with the understanding that they'll be making up the difference in tips. You can't really compare them to salaried workers.

Maybe they should have thought about that when they took the damn job.

I don't understand your resistance to this. Why are you so opposed to the idea of leaving 15 percent on the top of the bill to reward good service? Just think of it as part of the cost of dining out. If it's too much for you, maybe you should just eat at home.

Oh, sure. I have to stay home and eat because some waiter thinks carrying my food to the table is worth 15 percent of the bill total.

Well, maybe a waiter who only carries your food to the table isn't worth the 15 percent. Maybe you give that person a lower tip. But most waiters do a lot to make sure you're well taken care of during your meal.

That's their job, moran. But OK, if some waiter, like, refills my glass every time before I ask and sweeps away the crumbs and maybe flirts a little, OK, I'll leave an extra buck or two. But I'm not going to accept some arbitrary number as the rule. Fark that.

Fifteen percent on a $10 meal is a buck fifty. On a $20 meal it's three bucks. Are you seriously that cheap?

It has nothing to do with "cheap." I probably make more than you do, dumbass. I'm just not some drone who's going to buy into every random, arbitrary social convention because it's "how people do it."

Oh, so you're rebelling against society by not leaving tips. Is that it? How else do you rebel against society? Do you slam doors on the people walking in behind you and leave shopping carts out in the parking lot, too?

Hey, smart guy. In case you didn't know it, supermarkets hire people to collect shopping carts from parking lots. You're all worried about poor waiters making a decent living, what about the shopping cart collectors? And I bet you don't tip them either, do you?

If one brought me a cart out of the blue, I might.

Well, la-dee-da for you. Hey, I was gonna call you a dumbass right now, but I didn't. You gonna tip me for that?

I don't know why I bother talking to you. You're seriously one of the most retarded people I know.

Yeah, well, talking seriously to a retarded person sounds about par for the course for some schmuck who thinks pouring water is worth a fifteen percent tip.

For Christ's sake, we've been through that. Waiters do more than pour water. And they use their tips to pay out other people, too. The concierge, the bus boy...the tips get spread around to all the people who work the table.

You see this? You know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the waiters.

Yeah, yeah. You're real tough guy.

And you're a real schmuck.

Cheap bastard.

Social lemming.

Fark you.

Fark you.

Tipping thread!

Okay, let's get all the obligatories out of the way:

Pay "tipped" employees a normal wage and let tips be actual gratuities for outstanding service, not an "optional" 15% tax on the meal to make sure the waitstaff actually get paid.

One place I always make sure to tip well is the golf course. My caddy can basically make or break my game, and it's usually some high school kid just trying to make enough money to take his girlfriend out or buy a car in a few years. Unfortunately, the last time I went golfing all I had were $5 and $10 bills. So instead I gave that kid some free advice from someone with a career and a salary. Even gave him a card and told him he could put in some hours interning at the office as we're behind on filing (plus, free labor, right?).

I don't think he was listening :(.

7 "Canadian" is a restaurant slang term for a presumably bad tipper black person, i.e. "Jodie just sat six Canadians in your section, dude."

This is why I tip as little as I can, when I am with a group or on a trip I never tip, that way they can't poison me

I know they think they deserve a tip, that's why they don't get one, if they begged for one I would tip, but Fark people who think I owe them shiat

My life is garbage and I will be dead soon, atheists have convinced me that there is nothing greater than myself so Fark everyone, we should hurt others for the pain done to us, why not? There is nothing good in this world

Fark waiters and Fark children and kill every tree and whale

Things I have been tipped in my career as a pizza delivery driver:
--Beer
--$30 on a $20 order, hooray for drunks
--Religious tracts
--A big bag of weed
--Phone numbers
--Sexual advances
--A slice of the pizza I just delivered

The only good thing about merit-based tips is that it weeds out the people who have no business being wait staff. You know, like the one who brings you a salad before you get silverware or your drinks after waiting ten or fifteen minutes to even come see you, even though you're between the bar and kitchen entrances.

\did actually happen
\\it got worse from there
\\\IIRC, the bill was around $90 and change, my friend, a former waitress herself, insisted on leaving just the change
\don't think we ever saw said waitress again

So, how much do you tip the "carside to go" waiter at Applebee's, or similar take out arrangements? I do about 10%, since they only do 1 or trips to the car and we're out of there in 5 minutes. Even that seems generous. I also do the same at a buffet,

2011-12-05 08:45:14 AM
I enjoy tipping - it's an opportunity to show my generosity. Let's face it, you're never going to tip a bank-breaking amount... it's a small price to pay to show you are kind and generous human being.

I also enjoy buying people drinks and offering to pay the taxi fare home.

But I get narked off when others do nothing to return my generosity... I expect those within my social circle to be just as open-fisted.

or here in Florida... Calling someone a Canadian means they are from Canada and are horrible people to be around. We also call them Snow Birds and yes, they are the worse tippers down here. Go a mile for them and they give you nothing except disrespect.

Who does the tip go to? If the waiter would be paid minimum wage with or without the tips ... then you are tipping the owner?

I say carside to go is in the 10-15 range if they bring it to you - 10% if you pick it up at the bar. If the hostess or bartender sees me waiting for the food and asks me if I want a drink, I'll usually go 15%

2011-12-05 08:50:26 AM
I think it's asinine that it's legal to pay waitstaff less than minimum wage and that waitstaff at ever high-end establishments get paid well below what they are worth.

Both of these things are because of tipping. If tipping weren't so common these situations wouldn't exist. I'm not saying you shouldn't tip but you are suggesting that we should tip because of the problems that tipping has created.

It's the same logic is saying we need to escalate the war on drugs because drug cartels are violent and powerful because of the war on drugs.

Anyone got a good guide for what and how to tip? Cause I travel all over the place and I'm sure I routinely get it wrong. 10 percent is standard at home so that's what I usually chip in. Apparently 15 to 20 in the states, so there I'm a cheapo. An nil in Japan? So there I'm a condescending bastard.

2011-12-05 08:52:05 AM
I am not Mr Pink here and I understand the whys and hows of tipping a waitstaff/bartender for the personal service they provide. What I don't understand is why people tip thier mail carrier or garbage man at christmas. What is he doing for you beyond what his salary and benefit package are compensating him.

Depends on the place. If the plates are stacked at the bar, along with the silverware and there's a stack of cups near the drink fountain then I wont tip. But if they bring fresh plates and drink refills, then I'll throw a couple of bucks in there.

As a recent entry to the delivery driver scene, I will say the following:

If we know who you are, as in you order regularly, and you don't tip or don't tip well, your food WILL get there slower and possibly not how you expect it. Not intentionally, but when we see orders come up that we know are going someplace that doesn't tip, we either a) fight over who's taking it or b) wait until we have another one that does tip and we can take them at the same time so it's not a complete waste of gas.

The exact opposite goes for those we know tip well. That shiat gets there pretty much before you've even gotten off the phone from ordering.

Europe, 20%; Asia, 10%; Latin America(not the beach resort areas) 10%; no place in the world outside of the US do you tip a taxi.

AbbeySomeone: Some people just aren't cut out for it.

I get the feeling, lately, that people who shouldn't be anywhere near a restaurant for work are doing so just to cover bills because of the economy sucking. It's really obvious who has the good attitude and who just is mortified to be reduced to waitressing.

\then again, I'm the type that tries not to half-ass just because I'd rather just do it right because it's what I'm getting paid to do

A good tip is in cash and over the classic percentage.

A bad tip is bodychecking the server, macing the kitchen staff and squeezing the hostess's boobs on the way out.

I'm getting a refrigerator delivered Thursday, and it is going to be a pain in the balls to get in my house. I'm going to have to take 3 doors off of the hinges and the fridge's doors will have to come off too.

How much should I tip the delivery guys?

The cost of the fridge is $1500.

Of course it took me 15 minutes to explain to my wife we were better off getting 20% off the fridge and paying it off via credit card (8% per year) than getting 5% off and getting 0% interest for 6 months.

Tipping thread!

Let's just get this out of the way...

a number of farkers will claim to tip 20-30% because they a) once waited tables themselves b) are better than the rest of us c) all of the above.

a number of farkers will compare U.S. tipping standards to other countries, especially European ones, in a vain attempt to sound worldly. Many will get the details wrong.

a number of farkers will tell stories of good and bad tippers from their days as servers. Some will be true, most will be embellished at best or poor retellings of the various blogs and message boards frequented by bitter waitstaff.

OH HELL YES THIS. I'd rather you give me $2-3 cash than $5 on a credit card. After that credit card tip gets taxed, I only get about $2.50 of it anyway.
