A high fever and a reaction to meds can do this.

My cat may or may not have already exploded. I won't know until I open the box.

Right. Because people who might already be crazy don't get sick. They just become crazy after they get sick.

Fun fact - the compulsive behaviors aren't actually irrational. They are rational responses to irrational obsessive thoughts.

Like phobias and running the fark away. running away makes total sense if you're THAT terrified of spiders. It just doesn't make sense to be the terrified of spiders.

The brain is not a resilient organ. It is easily damaged.
If another organ in the body is damaged, it can run at less than 100% and we'll be "ok".
The brain can run at less than 100%, but it's REALLY important what part is damaged.
The brain also is very pharmacologically sensitive. Your body produces alot of chemicals to make the brain work correctly. If that mix of chemicals is off just a little, it can produce side effects.

mortimer_ford: It seems like an indirect relation. The child obsesses over the trauma of experiencing a nasty illness. Not from a cooked brain.

Maybe, but you'd think a good diagnosis could clear it up.

CSB-time: In my case, I had an inner ear infection that did some wacky things to my vestibular (balance) system. The brain has to compensate for the change in signal so it starts some rewiring. This has some odd side effects of making me highly caffeine sensitive, somewhat alcohol sensitive (I'm working on getting back my tolerance of these).

The other weird thing it did was that it occasionally provokes anxiety-like physical symptoms. Usually not the mental ones like racing thoughts or panic behavior, but all the muscle tension and adrenalin release. Sometimes its a feedback loop where dizziness causes tension which makes dizziness worse. It seems to improve with time as the brain continues adapting.

So I can totally see that an infection, particularly if it attached itself to part of the central nervous system, can cause neural symptoms. The brain has to rewire itself to compensate for signal changes.

I don't see why not - there has been research showing connections between other mental illness (particularly schizophrenia) and autoimmune disorders. I know that my own autoimmune disorder was first triggered by strep. Why not other autoimmune disorders or autoimmune related mental illness?

Both sides of my family have funky autoimmune disease histories ranging from psoriasis, to the undiagnosed, to lupus. My sister with OCD has recently been diagnosed with Lupus. My aunt, who tested positive for signs of lupus, had some other undiagnosed autoimmune thing and has a totally schizophrenic son with autoimmune issues. My son is bipolar, but only has massive allergies so far, but the other stuff could always follow - it's very prevalent in both my parents' families.

Since we are finding out that viruses can cause various cancers, why not infections with autoimmune effects trigger an underlying predeliction for mental illness.

//My slashies can become uneven, because my mental illness is so NOT OCD.
/Considering the other family choices, I am happy to have just plain old psoriasis.

I'm not sure why pants wetters would be worried, they're not scary, they're annoying. Yes, there are a few valid cases of those mental disorders but mostly they are used by people to avoid responsibility.

And for some reason, lots of people think that having one of those disorders is 'cool'. I guess it's because they find out an artist they like had it, or was some how mentally farked up, and they want to be like that. Not realizing that the person they want to be like was miserable and would have loved to be 'normal', like them.

They are whiny, irresponsible people and yes, everything is about them, this thread and everything else.

Hmm. I'm willing to try it (as at this point I'm willing to try just about anything). I'm just concerned right off the bat because my siituation is moderate to severe. So. I'm not hopeful (imagine that). But again. Worth a shot.

March is the best time for people in north America to be blood tested for a baseline on vitamin D (end of winter months). If it's bad, I wouldn't recommend waiting that long.

If the doc writes a scrip for vitamin d it might be cheaper than buying otc.

frontbutt: whiny vegans and the don't own a tv bunch

I compulsively hunt/fish and don't watch tv, though I do own one for DVDs and VHS. I mostly watch movies on the peecee unless I have company. There's a lot of us meat eating people that don't watch television much at all. Finding teevee uninteresting isn't a stepping stone to being a vegan. Neighbor is middle aged same as me, can't stand to watch teevee either, he'd rather be doing something outdoors, working in his shop, or on the net. He's a building contractor and a hunting buddy.

/Non-interactive entertainment just doesn't cut it for some people.

I am a carnivore and I don't watch television. I do spend a lot of time on the computer playing MMOs and stuff like that...slightly better than watching reality television I guess. I listen to music and read a lot...and I'm a movie nut. I just hate the news (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! PINEAPPLES!) And I hate commercials and most programming, but I'll watch good TV schtuff on DVD.

When I was your age, television was called books!

I know someone who developed obsessive, PTSD-like symptoms after having vivid, nightmarish fever dreams during a bad bout of flu in his mid-20s.

Afterward, the images his mind had generated during the fever kept haunting him, and he began to obsess on the idea that he was going to act on them and do terrible things to people he knew. Finally he had to go on OCD meds to control it and stop the daily panic attacks.

I'm with dkimball on this one.
