Sure, you can't really see it from here, but the cover for Strange Days by the Doors was shot on Sniffen Court. (new window)

really gives you an appreciation for perspective, light, and all of the other nuance that goes in to photography because most of those locations look mostly meh in google street view but pretty amazing when shot properly.

I had always assumed the Animals cover was someone's imagination, not a photo.

It's the Battersea power station in London, and it's HUGE. When I visited London I stayed near there, and it was weird seeing it in real life.

Even the powerstaion from Animals, with the angle and lighting, shows an architectural vision whereas the Google street shot it just looks like a big ol' building

Nah, let's stick with Southern Harmony. Would like to see Murmur also.

I just knew Abbey Road was going to be in there. Wtf's the deal with the zig-zag lane markings in the last 100 feet before the crosswalk? If I followed those, the farking pedestrians wouldn't know which way to jump before I mowed them down!

It's the Brit equivalent of a "No Parking" sign.

Not a painting, they used a giant inflatable pig balloon for the Animals cover art.

It's the Mapledurham Watermill outside Reading. Looks like they really cleaned the place up since 1970.

Same here. I thought it was some idealized art deco metaphor. Although I did learn later it was real. But it was still a shock when I saw it in person. I barely had time to grab the camera before it was too late.

The cover is faked. They never got a good shot of the inflatable pig before it tore loose of its moorings and floated away

seriously guys?

the picture is real.
the pig floated away before they could get a good picture
(the rifle marksman never showed up)
so they edited in a picture of the pig, into the sky above the Station.

One of the coolest things about Hipgnosis' album covers through the years -especially the ones for Floyd- is that they're all done for real with no special effects or camera trickery. That means they did insane things like make up a thousand bed on a beach. The Animals shoot was apparently as big a disaster as you'd expect; on the first day, the pig broke loose and they had to track it down and patch it up. The second day they took hundreds of shots, but only the one on the cover satisfied Storm and the band.

now, you see, "Momentary Lapse of Reason" is the one pink floyd cover that I thought was a painting.
To me, it just doesn't look like a picture.
