I'm glad Dune was at the #1 spot.

List fail without:

"Life can be a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when there's so much on the line. But you and I can make a difference. There's a mission just for you and me."

I would have added this exchange from Fellowship of the Ring:

Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play, for good or ill, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times; but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Wait, they picked the "Jedi craves not these things" quote from Yoda instead of the "Do, or do not. There is no try"?

That's hot like a flame, except missing the "f".

2011-12-05 07:29:33 AM
What about Do or do not, there is no try? That's Yoda's greatest quote.

That Yoda quote didn't really fit with the rest, IMO.

2011-12-05 07:52:57 AM
No "Today is a good day to die"? If you've done your best and you've fought your best and you've made your house proud, then yes, today is a good day to die. Why would you want to die on any other day? Why fear death?

"Victory is life" is also another good one. You go into it knowing that you're dead and you fight to live. Self preservation is a human's basic instinct, after all.

even if Jessica Rabbit still looks, to me, like a mutated strawberry popsicle.

And what do you do with a popsicle? You lick it.

That Conan quote might have originated with Genghis Khan.

How the hell could I forget my favorite movie, and it's best quote?

"Get busy living... or get busy dying."

Hogfather is a movie now, so I can TOTALLY use this exchange now.

"Death: Humans need fantasy to *be* human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.
Susan: With tooth fairies? Hogfathers?
Death: Yes. As practice, you have to start out learning to believe the little lies.
Susan: So we can believe the big ones?
Death: Yes. Justice, mercy, duty. That sort of thing.
Susan: They're not the same at all.
Death: You think so? Then take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder, and sieve it through the finest sieve, and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet, you try to act as if there is some ideal order in the world. As if there is some, some rightness in the universe, by which it may be judged.
Susan: But people have got to believe that, or what's the point?
Death: You need to believe in things that aren't true. How else can they become? "

/Alright, I admit, I'm mostly just a Pratchett fanboy.

List needs serious work; remove the NeverEnding Story, the non-SciFi and the things which are not relevant beyond your basement (wizards, Jedi) and replace those with some found in the thread (good Firefly refs, the better one from Yoda, and others).

This is probably my favorite: "Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens . The sleeper must awaken."

4. "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."

Sorry, but that one doesn't belong on the list as it has no practical application without getting in to a strained metaphor.

You know, man, if we ever make it home, I'm going to do so much farking cocaine. I'm gonna rape so many fine biatches. I'll be like, "What time is it? After 5:00? Damn. Time to go rape me some fine biatches."

The lesson here being, of course, that 5:00 is biatch-rapin' time.

cmunic8r99: The Princess Bride is science fiction?

Pretty sure this list is scifi/fantasy.

If the author says, "I'm not going to even pretend this could have happened in the real world", it's scifi/fantasy.

great quote.

dittybopper: Wait, they picked the "Jedi craves not these things" quote from Yoda instead of the "Do, or do not. There is no try"?

I think Mr. Myagi said that one better but I'm not convinced Karate Kid is fantasy, for those struggling to remember quote:

Walk on road, hm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later get squish just like grape.

I'd also add in ObiWan from the prequels, if only as a warning to never believe your own propaganda:

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

For those that fail at English, that's an absolute. The Jedi seem quite fond of using them as well.
