For electronics company Philips has devised a 'bio-light' that will provide any room in the house with a warm, cosy glow.

As long as you consider green a "warm" or "cosy" color.

how long until we find out that they are a semi-sentient parasitic mass of drones that crave your livers and live in symbiosis with a fungus that lives under your house and eats pets for breakfast.

Glad I'm not the only one who cares about the hyphen.

By the way, there are fluorescent proteins in many colors - they could probably combine them to produce a white light.

Serious question to any Farkers that may know. How much do you think it would cost to build a 1:1 replica of Serenity? Land is already taken care of. Just the materials and labor for a project that size.

A couple of bucks, I would think. Maybe three.

I thought firefly like browncoat.

But, this is still cool. But, speaking to upthread, the color produced is not that important, hell, prisms could take care of that now, right? Plus, this is lab prelim stuff, it is just showing the potential. And aren't there other colors of the spectrum produced by other organisms?
And sure, maybe it may not light your home, but see it like the radium dials on your watch. This could be used for dials and lighting of instrument panels in the kitchen and basement, light switches, outlets...

Pretty interesting, I think.

Might wanna contact the production facility that built the interior sets, then triple that figure at least for putting it in an actual hull.

Those are fluorescent proteins (ie, GFP and its variants). They only glow when hit with UV. They're not luminescent like fireflies or luminescent bacteria.

Sure, they are harmless now. But soon, mutation kicks in, and next up it's ultraviolet. Then soft x-rays, then hard x-rays. Then GAMMA rays! It's Chernobyl times 10^6! Hand to fimbria combat with giant gamma emitting bacteria glowing with Cherenkov light!

No thanks. I'll take my chances with mercury tainted CFLs.

I wonder if they considered internal volume when designing the outside of the ship. After all, I've always been rather unimpressed with the size of the engine room and the engine design, but not enough to destroy the suspension of disbelief.

Revealing the depths of my firefly geekdom, I'll say this: Joss Wheadon outlines a lot of the ship In the DVD special features (or on YouTube). 125 feet long. It was done over two floors. The exteriors were largely cgi, of course. I would think that if you had a bead on scrap metal, that would keep cost down. If i was doing it around here (oil and gas country), i'd start looking at decommissioned gas plants, line heater stations, compression stations. Things like that. Lots of interesting industrial shapes.

You'll probably need a crane, though.

IIRC from commentaries, they actually built the ship as the set.

From what I understand, they built most of the interior with everything laid out 1:1 as it was supposed to be for the ship, but only a few parts of the exterior were built (e.g. the cargo loading ramp and doors), and I'm not sure whether they were attached to the interior set, but I doubt they were.

I think QMx has the license to all the plans, CG models and design details that were used in the show and the movie. They may be willing to provide some information as long as they don't see your project as competition.

Probably wouldn't be as good as non-luminescent kinds. GMO foods tend to not taste very good, you know.
