A single miscalculation from a Ferrari driver earlier today in Japan led to a chain reaction that ultimately wrecked or destroyed 14 vehicles including eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Skyline, and a Prius

Ok, guessing he gets thrown out of the club. I seriously doubt there's ever been a more expensive 14 car pileup, at least off the race track.

vossiewulf: at least off the race track

In fact my first thought upon reading the headline was "wait, what race has all those cars together?" and then "...and a Prius? WTF?"

As for TFA, had to laugh at "China Road" - it's "Chuugoku Road," "Chuugoku" CAN mean China but it's also the name of a region in, well, mid-Japan.

Hey hey poormitter, I drive a vintage Mercedes; curb your resentment because you can't have nice things.
Fantastic mileage, incredibly safe, low insurance and it's paid for.

I thought it was a dig at the Prius, but I don't know squat about cars...

I can imagine after seeing the +million dollar carnage the Prius owner could have a laugh.

fark the Benz, they're just Europe's Oldsmobile. No loss.
Now the Ferraris, that's a shame.

How much you want to bet the Prius owner was smugging his way down the passing lane at under the speed limit and caused the whole thing by refusing to let the others pass?

Came here for this. True story: I used to microfilm police accident report records for a major city. Approximately 8 out of 10 accidents had at least one asian driver named...

sounds to me like they were street racing and the guy lost it trying to pass. that would explain why there was only 1 non-sports car in the wreck as they were all bunched up and chained like that.

I can guess the Prius was probably a pivot point to the crash. The Mercs are an unknown here. I don't know the difference between the performance and the luxury models.

I won't guess on the specifics. The post accident interviews have to be something..

The linked Japanese article indicates that the accident was triggered by the lead Ferrari entering the passing lane to pass another car (probably said Prius) and hitting the center guard rail, so I'll take that bet.

The description makes it sound like the Prius was probably just minding his own business in the left (non-passing--it's Japan, remember) lane when the exotics came around a wet bend too fast and the Ferrari driver handled the situation poorly.

2011-12-05 12:44:41 AM
Well, THERE's your problem: They were driving on the wrong side of the road!

Jeez Louise. Even the steering wheels are on the wrong side!

2011-12-05 12:45:27 AM
The whole tragedy could have been averted if the Ferrari Owner would have just pushed the prius out of the way instead of trying to pass while the prius hogged the passing lane. What is it with eco-weenies going under the speed limit in the passing lane anyway?

I just get out of the way and let a tractor trailer ride their bumper.

From what I read, one of the Ferrari's was trying to overtake another driver. My guess is that the Prius was what he was trying to pass.

Oh man, I'm so glad that wasn't just me. I burst out laughing. I live off the Chuugoku expressway(the road in question), but I think I'm gonna start calling it the China Road. Far more hilarious.

Also, a driver trying to pass someone? Are we sure this happened in Japan???

I considered buying a vintage mercedes once....A few months later we were hit with a massive tornado and hail storm. It would have been insured of course, but it also would have destroyed it.

I'm glad I don't have a vintage Mercedes. Hell, a friend of mine has a 10-year old Mercedes and it's basically farked up - looks nice though.

heh, China Road.

Anyway, people pass cars all the time on the expressway up here. I usually try to stay away from the semis leap frogging each other up the hills, they get kind of crazy especially at night. And then all the people who come up really fast behind you and then merge in front with like 3 inches to spare, sheesh. I'm usually cruising in the slow lane with my old slow Pajero Mini. (But it's so cute!)
