Delivery people remember non tippers.
Really, they provide a convenience so tip them or they'll phone you in for being stoned.

Tip your pizza dude, you weenieburgers. They're cheaper than a DUI and warmer than pickup.

Ten years? TEN YEARS?!?! Maybe this dude should think about changing his profession to something a little more lucrative, like grocery bagger or car wash attendant.

/Or dealing weed. He's in the perfect profession for that.

My delivery guy gets an automatic $4-$5 for a delivery to me. Unless he's a useless douchebag who can't understand English well enough to work the lobby intercom system and I have to go downstairs to let him in. Which surprisingly happens quite often.

12. No driver should be held responsible for a bounced check. Since it is the policy of the store to accept checks, it is their problem to collect on bad checks and not the driver. The driver is not a collection agency and should not be put in danger by collecting money from bad checks. Money should never be deducted from a driver to cover the cost of a bad check.

I'd give him this one.

Except that the MANAGEMENT decides that, and some are unwilling to listen to drivers talk about how dangerous an area is.

Not necessarily. I used to work with quite a few Ukranians (Who would get PISSED if you called them Russian.) who spoke only enough English to get by for normal orders, but had troubles at a certain level. Good guys, most of them, though.

This guy has a good point, if you're getting paid 20$ but you must pay for your car and gas; you're not really making 20$.

This would provide a disincentive to be as efficient as possible though, so you're better off with mandatory 15% tip. I have no problem with this, and I've never had a problem with it.

AbbeySomeone: Delivery people remember non tippers.

This. I deliver sandwiches on my bicycle and every one of my fellow drivers and I know every single person in town who does not tip. They are treated accordingly.

I understand that no one is forcing you to tip, but there is an implied social contract that says I should get a tip for busting my ass so you don't have to get off yours; to the point where the company I work for (and every other store or company in the country that has employees that accept gratuities) pays me less than I'd make elsewhere, assuming I make up the difference in tips.

Of course, we also remember the good tippers, and they get their food as fast as humanly possible, with freebies thrown into the order too if we can sneak it by management.

2011-12-04 05:39:28 PM
As someone who just had his third day as a delivery driver, I'm really getting a kick out of this. Luckily I get more than minimum wage per hour no matter what, and if it's farther than 10 minutes away we don't deliver.

/Don't forget to tip

rhiannon: This has to be a joke. I stopped reading after "I am always cut off in traffic."

Well, it's probably true. People seem to think that seeing a car topper gives them license to cut off, tailgate or otherwise drive poorly around a delivery driver. I can't TELL you the number of times I had to short stop because some moron started pulling out even though I was clearly visible.

Even worse are pedestrians, who think that they can start crossing the street wherever, and then stop for a 5 minute chat in the middle of the road. I was once pulling out of my store, and a guy stops in the middle of the sidewalk. Just stops. I wait patiently for him to move, giving him a minute or so to move. (It was Friday, and they were bar hopping, I can respect that, kinda.) After it becomes obvious that he won't be moving, I honk, once, briefly (Less than half a second.), and home-skillet gives me a death glare. His buddy gets in on the action, and both start acting like King Shiat of Turd Mountain. So I do the most natural thing in the world: Let off the brake and move forward all of a foot. Scares off the King and his jester, I move on with my night.

And when it's not them, it's cops getting in on the action. In my last year driving, I got pulled over a few times, and I was not speeding at all. (Not that you really COULD in the areas I got pulled over in...but I did always try to keep my speed relatively decent.) Once, I admit, was my fault. I thought I had my lights on, but didn't. Cop was nice enough to give me a warning.

AbbeySomeone: Delivery people remember non tippers.

I know a couple guys who delivered pizza back in the day. Yes, they remembered non-toppers. No, they didn't spit on their pizzas or save them for last. "That psychic biatch never tipped." "Because she knew you wouldn't spit on her food." "Damnit!" And they always made their deliveries using the shortest path possible regardless of tipping history. It's not like they'd do a loop of the area, then backtrack to make the non-tipper delivery. The only way it really came into play was avoiding runs with non-tippers.

Some pizza stores pay their drivers nothing an hour.

Then don't work there!

My car was once slammed into by a drunk driver while I was on the job.

Yeah, drunks suck. We all have to deal with them.

I think they should have to provide a car

Yeah, that's not gonna happen.

If you allow this practice to continue, I believe they should have to charge at least a $5 delivery charge. The drivers or Congress should decide the amount but not the owners. I think Congress should appoint someone to look into this and possibly make laws to govern delivery charges. If they pay a driver less than minimum wage, a fifteen percent tip should be mandatory.

Government price control on pizza delivery? How about no.

Congress needs to decide a proper way to pay drivers that all pizza restaurants must follow.

Again, no.

I drove for a couple of different places in Lousyana and Virginia to supplement the income. $300/weekend was not unusual. Maybe this guy just sucks as a driver.

/Yesterday, I saw a pizza delivery sign on a Land Rover Discovery. That is wrong on so many levels.

Dude, this is life. I have never had to deliver pizzas for a living, most people haven't, but we deal with bad drivers in traffic all the time. And, sometimes the idiots are pizza delivery drivers in their car speeding through the neighborhood with kids playing. Having a pizza company sign on your car doesn't mean you passed commando offensive driving school, it means you have a shiatty job. There is a difference.

Also, if there was a federally mandated $5 charge for deliveries, deliveries will become rare and most drivers will lose their jobs.

I went into this prepared to scoff at all the whining, but he makes some points that I'm pretty sympathetic with:

1. A store should not pay a driver less than federal or state minimum wage. If it does, a fifteen percent gratuity must be included automatically in the bill.

2. Mileage reimbursement must equal the value of a car used. The courier rate for mileage should apply to drivers or something very similar. ( I would reword this, but I agree that the reimbursement for mileage should be closer to the courier rate. 60 cents per delivery regardless of the distance is laughable.)

7. No driver should be required to be the primary dishwasher person in a dine-in restaurant. This is essentially a double shift for the same amount of pay.

10. No pizza store should deduct from a driver's pay the difference in price to cover a missing coupon or a coupon that a customer refused to give. Neither should a driver be reduced in mileage compensation for this.

Also, If a driver injured in the course of a robbery while on the job as a delivery man, his employer should have a medical plan in place to help pay for the driver's injuries.

This sounds like a shiatty, shiatty job, and I'm going to give my pizza guy a nice tip next time I order in.
