Worked there for about 4 years and can't say I'm surprised. They were chasing a failing business model way back in 2005, so it stands to reason they are worse off now.
The most ridiculous change they made during my time there was to take away the "office supplies" section, so no employees could concentrate on that portion of sales specifically. It really made a noticeable impact on business at our store. But the company kept trying to build itself up to be some kind of Best Buy Jr. Only with worse prices/selection if you can believe it.

Staples sells office supplies? I wouldn't even think of looking there.

Sweet!

This should bump my DMI stock a few points tomorrow.

Where do you think they buy office supplies from? I know you think they just magically appear in the supply cabinet, and come from Narnia.

Yes, but people at my work really do believe they magically appear from the back of the cabinet.

I was in our local Staples the other night and it looks like a Brookstone store exploded in there.

I was ranting about Staples just last night--how if you try to apply for a job there, they'll ask you a bunch of insulting questions like, "Have you ever stolen anything from work?" and "Have you ever gotten into a physical altercation with a co-worker?"

This is before they'll allow you to fill out a job application on-line (which is the only way you can apply for a job anymore.) So fark you, Staples, die.

/Unfortunately the other places I tried to apply on-line now have the same policy. I might as well just become a drug dealer--pays better, and it seems that everyone thinks you're a criminal anyway.

Staples sucks ass, I hope they go under.

Mistakenly bought a headset there thinking since everything's a cheap piece of Chinese shiat now (even when it's expensive) that buying from a place nearby would make returning it when it inevitably breaks less of a hassle.

First store I went nuclear in in a long time. I mean really...you're going to try to stand by that scam of using a company that wants the original packaging back and forces me to wait 3 weeks to get a replacement in the hopes of cutting down on replacing your cheap Chinese shiat that broke the first week instead of just giving me the one off the rack right there? That's almost a goddamn shooting right there.

/gave me the one off the rack
//didn't give the cashier a hard time, just the manager trying to tell me it's not a scam
///eat a dick corporate assholes

So, you returned something that was broken, and they had the nerve to ask for the original packaging? Those BASTARDS! I bet they wanted you to show them a receipt, too! Burn that place to the ground!

I don't know how Staples stays in business. I've never driven by one that wasn't empty. (Yes, I know, anecdotes != data.) They're like Radio Shack, except that instead of $3 parts to stereos nobody's owned in 50 years, they sell paper.

My local Staples has a creepy vibe. Other than the employees, it's deserted. When I'm walking down the aisles it feels like I'm in one of those movies where you round a corner and a zombie is waiting there to rip your throat out. And their selection of office supplies is like the weird foodstuffs your in-laws from the Slavic country nobody has heard of serve when you have to visit them. A passing resemblance to the regular stuff, but just enough off to be suspect.

I actually had a very good experience at a "Staples" today.

I needed a SATA data cable right away, and while there are bazillions of them online, I was hoping they weren't lying when they said they had some in stock at the store in my zip code because I needed one rather immediately.

Well, ok, the local Staples didn't have one. But the young fellow who shall remain nameless behind the repair counter (and I'm not going to say where) rooted about and found me one SATA data cable for free. It was professional courtesy.

"Here ya go! You didn't get this here!"

"Thank you good sir."

So, Thank you nameless tech! I promise to pass it on.
