Didn't someone post a Guide to Comic Book Best Of... lists? Seems like they followed that fairly well here.

Also...seriously, where's Aquaman? New 52 Aquaman is pretty spiffy.

Presumably, nowhere near any "best of" list. One of the first of the New 52 that I quit reading.

LEt's face it...Geoff Johns is pretty much THE go to guy for revamping a stale character.

Willowy: Where the hell is Batwoman: Elegy?

They fulfilled their "Big Two" requirement with Animal man, honestly, so they didn't see the need to add that one.

The Rob Liefeld artwork on that was a dealbreaker for me. My eyeballs were bleeding.

I refuse to pick that book up again until they replace the team on it. Liefeld is horrible, sure, but the writing was below fanfic, to me.

The only one of this list that I've read so far is the delightful Hark! A Vagrant. Troop 142 and Scalped seem interesting, though. Also, I never thought I'd see Harold Bloom quoted in a review of the comics.

I wish there was more crossover between French bandes dessinées and English comics. Although some English comics get translated into French it doesn't often happen the other way around (Persepolis is the only major example I can think of.)

So to add to this list, here's the French comic book critic's association (BDs: serious business) long-list for the best of 2011:

Julia & Roem d'Enki Bilal, Casterman

He is improving. No pouches, the characters have reasonable feet, and Dove's boobs are each smaller than the size of her head.

It's still Liefield, so it's crap, but he is improving...

I'm humored that to find another Big Two comic to include in their Best Of list they hadda go to a collection of stories from the 80s.

And rightly so, Simonson's run on Thor was anything I read from DC/Marvel this year. Yeah, including Animal Man (its good but its not that good).

Let's be fair... that Simonson Thor omnibus collected a great run, and was big enough to beat a midget to death with.

That's a re-release, I should add. But worth it.

I won't trust anything by a French critical panel, they are practically forced by law and custom to pick 51% of French work as finalists. That said, at least they didn't embarrass themselves by putting a decade-old reissue (Blankets) and a critical overview of a classic (Metamaus) on their best-of list.

/co-sign with all the Liefeld-haters, that guy should be banned from working in comics until he takes lessons.

He did a book with Robert Kirkman, which I couldn't even pick up, I feared the pouches so much.

I DO give Liefeld some props for coming up with one of my favorite characters, Deadpool.

Blacksad has done reasonably well as a graphic novel series .. and Sky Doll got translated twice (once in Heavy Metal, and in a series/TPB by Marvel Comics).

On the classic BD front, both Tintin and the original Smurfs albums have seen nice english-language TPBs this year .. thanks to their respective film adaptations.

droosan: Tintin

I tried reading some Tintin, but I couldn't get into it. I just have a hard time accessing them for some reason. I get that they're incredibly popular, and I can see some rather innovative narrative techiniques, as well as stories, but...meh. Something about it is just off putting to me.

Numbers two and one were at an expo I went to a couple months back. The lines to get Beaton & Thompson to sign their books were huge. I had been reading Hark! A Vagrant for a long time, but she ran outta stock!

At that expo I also randomly fell onto one of the best comic books I've ever read, Any Empire by Nate Powell. It's brilliant.

All of Jodorowski's The Metabarons saga comics are available in English.

And Marvel has been publishing the Soleil comics for some time now.

New Guardians was probably the biggest disappointment to me along with Grant Morrison's Superman (Action Comics).

See, I don't like Morrison much, and this run has started to change my mind. I just hope that he doesn't negate all of the story in the last 2 issues of his run.

Yeah, I felt kind of cheated, too. I thought it was going to literally be the 20 best comics of 2011, not 10 comics and 10 reprints.

/and, depending on if DC decides to screw up the art reproduction or not, I'd say the best reprint of 2011 isn't out until the week before Christmas... Lois Lane Archives, volume 1.
