Iran is also threatening unspecified retaliation.

Great, now they'll know the secrets of aerodynamics and learn to build planes! We must keep technology from these people at all costs!

Seriously, it's a write-off. Don't get all freaked out.

2011-12-04 10:54:43 AM
There are plenty where that came from. We just have to wait for the respawn.

Suck it, Iran.

2011-12-04 10:54:54 AM
That's cool, we'll use the clone tool to send some more in.

/where my Photoshop nerds at?

Meh. Are they sure it wasn't Israeli. I guess it really doesn't make a difference.

I hope that poor pilot in Colorado is ok and we get him back to his family soon.

They're totally not at war with us though. Nope. They're totally not trying to get the Iranian people to support a war by creating US incursions. Nope. Nothing to see here. Everything is fine. There was no drone. That was a chicken.

ZAZ: Iran is also threatening unspecified retaliation.

Claiming unspecified retaliation is always better than saying what you're actually going to do, which is whine piteously before realizing that you lack the capability to enact any meaningful retribution.

2011-12-04 10:56:38 AM
Well that was a stupid thing for them to do.

2011-12-04 10:57:03 AM
holding my breath for the tv footage of the recovered wreckage. it should be warehoused with the 'spy equipment' that the hikers were accused to be caught with.

It was engaged in steady, sustained flight, so at least they know it didn't belong to them.

Hmm, an unpopular president leading the country during a poor economy and record unemployment while also facing foreign relations problems with Iran. Sound familliar? You can go derp derp derp all you want, but these derpy derps are going to derp their way right into White House in 2012.

2011-12-04 10:58:56 AM
Don't they make this claim every few weeks and never provide a picture?

This might be meant as retaliation for their diplomats being expelled from the UK.

Let's trade them our understanding of Aerodynamics for Diplomacy

Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

Good enough for me. Let's go do something else.

2011-12-04 11:02:18 AM
C'mon. This story is totally plausible because we don't have an extensive array of spy satellites... we simply have to overfly them in cheap ass drones.

Begun the drone wars have

2011-12-04 11:02:48 AM
Meh, with the Hardline perk, I'll get another drone in no time anyway.

2011-12-04 11:04:29 AM
Dammit, and I worked hard for that 4 killstreak.

2011-12-04 11:04:43 AM
What's a photoshop? I've heard of photoshoop before...

2011-12-04 11:04:54 AM
Meh. I'll rage when they shoot down my 18 kill streak AC-130.

2011-12-04 11:05:41 AM
I hope this isn't considered off topic, but all this is stemming from nobody wanting Iran to have nukes. I like and agree with that concept, but...

I've been sort of wondering, what's our authority for telling another nation what they can't build? Is Iran a non-nuclear proliferation country or anything and they're violating that? I mean, they're an awful example of a country but they are a country. Can't they pretty much do what they want?

2011-12-04 11:06:07 AM
Sure they did. Show me the wreckage!

/it's not as though they will learn every state secret from one drone

There are no embassy staff to hold hostage and this President has never shown a tendency to shy away from gutsy missions or bombing enemies, even going as far as to kill American citizens without trial.

For the 75 trillionth time, Obama isn't Carter or even close.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the article contained a response from the US? Or a picture of the drone? Right now all we have is their word. What did they shoot it down with? What was it near?

2011-12-04 11:11:23 AM
Why don't we have self destruct mechanisms on these things?

Or maybe they just don't care for other country's military drones buzzing around their airspace.

2011-12-04 11:14:30 AM
Somebody sure wants to go to war with this country.

2011-12-04 11:14:41 AM
"The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces."

And they trying to say the _drone_ has little damage to it? If so, come on. Even if you didn't shoot it down, and it just malfunctioned and spiraled, the amount of force it would hit with, normally damages the shiat out of them (like, beyond repairable...regardless of what you're flying). Happens in Iraq/Afghanistan too.

I'm not saying it doesn't have recoverable pieces, but...even if it was flying super duper low, hell, I'll even give you, 1000 ft, the impact of that hitting the ground = NOT 'little damage'.

This is why I really, really like the drone program. The downside, of course, is that it's making successive administrations more comfortable with sending in drones because it's so easy (new window) (started under Bush and really ramped up under Obama).

Iran is a signatory of the NNPT, but then so is the US and the NNPT, in addition to mandating non-nuclear nations do not obtain nukes, says that nuclear states are obliged to make an effort to disarm. since its been 40 years and the US can still kill everyone on the planet it probably shouldn't make to much noise about other people being in breach. (but it will anyway because it can)

Winnar! I mean what are we going to do, admit it's ours and basically admit to being the aggressor?

FTFA: ""Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying."

How on Earth would they know it is an RQ-170?.... of which only cell phone pictures exist. If you had a relatively "intact" RQ-170 there would be no reason not to immediately publish photos and make as big of a stink as possible.

Oh and then there is this :

"It said the drone had been brought down by a virtual attack from Iran's cyberwarfare unit, after taking control of it." Link

I doubt a country that can't keep malware from blowing up their gas centrifuges can hack semi-autonomous drone that they probably couldn't track.
