We need Newt as president about as much as a fish needs a bicycle.

That's pretty interesting. Ironic though: today we would gladly accept some serious accountant talk with promises of balancing the budget. Nobody seems to care about all that quality of life stuff now.

I agree. She survived longer than that with no weapons and no training.

Well, it was 1 wife ago and before it became apparent to everybody that he's just a pandering hack in it for the dollars.

The nice thing about being a lib is being able to evolve one's thinking when presented with new information. Also, one might argue that Obama stands in the political spectrum where mainstream conservatism was a decade ago.

Makh: Many people stopped being conservative.

Well, stopped being right-wing, there are still plenty of conservatives around unaffiliated and in the relevant wing of the Democratic party (which is much less focused on left-wing issues than it once was, witness their zero-farks-given stance on gun control and censorship now versus being entirely in favor of both in the 90s). Factional loyalty changed, but actual political outlook I think not so much. It's been more the GOP going crazy and dumping members than members changing their minds and going elsewhere.

Newt had another strong performance in last nights Huckabee Forum (One of the best debate models I've seen yet btw) and it looks like he's going to pick up some of Cains support. Perry is the only other likely candidate I can see picking up Cain Supporters, but I think it'll be too little too late. He stumbled a bit last night over the whole "Executive Order" issue with Obama Care, though he did manage to nuance his way out of it; still, a Perry Nuance is fairly clumsy.
Newt is enjoying himself on the campaign trail, has managed to stay disciplined so far (the thing most think can sink him) and Democrats are trying to poison the well by leaking stories that they secretly hope he wins the nomination, while laughably claiming Romney is the only electable one. He's managed to maintain his front runner status despite the attacks against him of the past week by both Democrats and Republican insiders as he's fairly well inoculated from the "baggage" people keep talking about. It'll be very difficult for opponents to pull an "October Surprise" on him because we already know all the bad stuff they can dredge up, and much of it is falsehoods and misreading of context. I think the man has a very good chance of pulling it off and depending on who he would choose as a running mate, could only make his chances better.

I think a Paul VP nod would be a bad idea, though I wouldn't mind seeing Ronny get a cabinet post and a little more influence over economic policies, maybe Huntsman who seems to be a favorite of many and could appeal to moderate voters because he did work for Obama and knows his shiznit when it comes to Foreign policy. Though, it's still a little too early to be thinking about that, we'll see if he wins Iowa. If he does, he just might pull out New Hampshire, and if he wins both, well, then it'll be time to start thinking of a running mate.

MFAWG: DarnoKonrad: 1995? How many wives ago was that?

Well, it was 1 wife ago and before it became apparent to everybody that he's just a pandering hack in it for the dollars his "leadership" led Republicans to dismal results in the '98 midterm elections, and members of his own party forced him to resign.

Shouldn't Dems love Gingrich? He's for a balanced budget, national health care and wants to attack global warming, which would seemingly make him beloved on that side of the aisle. It's almost as if Democrats don't know anything about him other than that they hate him because they think they're supposed to hate him. It's weird, because normally Democrats aren't so ignorant about everything (there really needs to be a sarcasm font).

It's almost as if the Republicans have shifted so far to the batshiat-crazy right that someone like Newt seems like a centrist by comparison.

You act as if we'd never met him before. We spent years with him in the news every day.

Are you that young?

You'd think Republicans would hate him because of his disastrous leadership skills in the late 90s. . .

If I remember correctly Ariana's heel face turn happened a couple years after this, around the time that her marriage to Michael Huffington dissolved. Her writing and speaking skillz made her very useful while the marriage lasted. The paid pundit gig ended with the marriage.

Around the same time, Bill Maher's old Politically Incorrect show used to play her off against Al Franken, since it was always entertaining seeing those two debate. Eventually those two became great friends and I think Franken started to influence her.

2011-12-04 02:55:12 PM
Arianna Huffington has always been a shallow opportunist.

In the mid 1990s, she was a die-hard Republican because she desperately wanted her gay husband Michael elected to the U.S. Senate.

Once her husband divorced her -- and with the Senate out of reach -- she was no longer the same person. She drifted away from the Republican party to seek out greener pastures.

Arianna has no core political beliefs. She only cares about Arianna.

eraser8: Arianna Huffington has always been a shallow opportunist.

Kinda seems like it.

I like her Eva Gabor accent. If they ever do a remake of "Green Acres" she should definitely get the part and i'd probably watch the first 15 minutes of it if it included the part where she makes hotcakes you can patch a roof with.

offmymeds: Article was from 1995. What's she got to say about Newtie now?

What's Gingrich himself have to say?

Then:
"I don't think that any white conservative anywhere in America ought to look at Louis Farrakhan and just condemn him, without asking yourself where were you when the children died, where were you when the schools failed, where were you when they had no hope, and unless we're prepared to roll up our sleeves and we are prepared to reach out and to say, "I'll give you an alternative...'"

Now:
"What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?"

Well taking your rich gay husband, kicking him out of the closet, and turning that into a kind of media empire is kind of an interesting path through life.
