I wasn't expecting to beat all the Fark mods in here. I was expecting them to block all non-mod comments until they'd all had a chance to demand that Drew start paying them.

Oh, well. Sometimes life doesn't go the way you expect.

I'd be like Jeff in the old days. Lock down the thread, beat the commenters mercilessly, then open the dessicated husk up for a kindler and gentler generation of non-banned people to comment on.

I don't think I'd want to be a fark moderator. it seems a thankless job.

Accused of bias and inattention both for the low, low, low price of your soul, first born, AND beers put in your hand at Fark Parties? What MOAR thanks do you need, man?

I don't know. TFD seems to occassionally have threads supporting the moderators in their line of work.

Doing the job does seem like a necessary evil. In other words, if you really cared about Fark being a better place for everyone, you would be the right person to be a mod. If you only cared about being able to have the power to ban anyone you please just because they seem out of line, maybe it's not the line of work for you.

/what do I know, I've never been a moderator

Fark mods do their work for free.

Thanks again mods!

80k? I was expecting maybe a notch over minimum wage. 80k isn't bad in exchange for dealing with the dregs of various webs. We get plenty of that here just by being Fark Lieberals when the Hateful Rightists emerge from their crypts. And we do it for free!

Well, TFA says this is heading offshore, so it won't last long.

It'll be interesting (in the Chinese curse sense) to see the failure modes from that - a foreign mod may not understand why asking for recipes in a cat lovers forum might be a bit inflammatory.

Hmm, good point. We may see flamers and trolls utilizing English idioms more to skirt the foreign mods.

I don't really understand the need for comment moderators (A.K.A. censors) on most sites (including here). I guess if you're the Chinese government or something, having them makes sense, but I've always thought why have a damn forum if you're just going to erase comments you don't like?

If were were allowed to say fark or show pictures of breasts uncensored, the assholes who advertise zombie themed knock-offs might take their business to a more proper forum.

That's why censorship (unrelated to government/constitutional issues) threads are so fun. Most farkers will cry and cry about it, not realizing that they support a highly conservative (not politically) website

I think the advertising argument for censorship is bullshiat; twitter is not censored beyond illegal content and people are plenty willing to advertise and allow customers to contact them on twitter, even if they say fark.

Actually, I would say the mods here on Fark let a lot of stuff fly that most other sites wouldn't. As long as it is at least a little funny, you can insult either gender, any ethnicity, midgets, the gheys, the straights, people who wnet to crappy schools, people who earned liberal arts degrees, how people with engineering degrees can't get laid, and so on. Probably the only exception is if you say something just outrageously over-the-top.

The only posts I have ever had deleted were actually pretty benign and the only reason I can think of why the moderator deleted them was because s/he disagreed with what I said on philosophical grounds. Just didn't agree with my POV regarding GSEs and nuked my posts because of it.

Not many people can make it past the micropenis requirement.

I guess that is why, as the article says, most mods are middle aged women. They are also hard to shock and have no problem scolding those who misbehave.

Well, TFA says this is heading offshore, so it won't last long.

Offshore moderation will probably have the same success as offshore phone helplines. A lot at first, due to the low cost, and then less and less as people realize that they are getting what they are paying for and no more.

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, off-topic posts, and spam.

Of course, what's "off-topic" somewhere like PriusChat may be fine somewhere like Fark.

To those commenting about mods getting paid minimum wage: Think about the kind of people that would apply for that job at minimum wage. You really want that pimply-faced little a-hole from Micky D's moderating a website like NPR, Yahoo, or Moms-To-Be? Ha!

Higher pay = better candidates, something many companies these days have forgotten

I thought Fark mods had been paid professionals for a few years now. Nobody ever said so, but around 2007 Fark finished the transition from Drew and friends to big business. Many of the old modmins vanished around that time along with many old users. You don't often see admin or mod accounts, other than the generic Moderator, posting any more. I can think of only one who does so regularly and two including Drew who comment occasionally.

Fark actually has a pretty hands-off moderating approach, at least compared to some forums I've seen. The mods are usually fairly objective and enforce only the rules that are written down.

I've seen forums where mods are given the authority to apply much more subjective criteria, deleting posts or reprimanding people for off-topic, low-content, inflammatory, or otherwise disagreeable stuff.

What about a far-right conservative website?

Like... freepers? You REALLY want that job?

Course, unless you were a far-right conservative yourself, they wouldn't hire you.

/Also, yahoo. Just pick a yahoo news article at random and read the comments. They make youtube seem like rainbows and unicorns.

Are they they trying to make it seem like Gawker is some unmoderated Wild West governed only by page views? What a load of crap... It's one of the most heavily, and poorly, moderated group of sites on the internet. I thought it was great when I discovered them, but found out pretty quickly that they're some of the most self-promoting, thin-skinned, elitist prick asshats out there.

Fark mods are some of the bravest, warmest, kindest, most wonderful people I have ever known in my life.

Lord help the forum that ever let me moderate.

The people who fark up you're/your and their/they're/there would be first to feel the wrath of the banhammer. I might even track them down and send a squad of English teachers over to waterboard them and not let them back into polite society until they get their linguistic shiat together.

Oh, and Marketplace stock options.
