I worked at Sbux and they gave us books that contained the nutritional info for each drink. The light frappuccino itself had less calories than the optional whip cream that would go on top of it. No one ordered it without the whip.

I started drinking Folger's because it's cheap and in my budget. If you get the dark roast/bold, it's not bad. Any recommendations for inexpensive coffee I can brew at home are welcome.

Even if you order the whole milk version, cutting out the whipped cream goes a long way toward less fat. I've noticed that Dairy Queen and McDonalds both now offer the option of whipped cream and cherry on their shakes, the way Steak n Shake and ChikFilA have been.

But it's all good, ambulance and hospital gurney manufacturers need new markets.

/Small Diary Queen Chocolate Shake, mix in some extra chocolate, forget the whipped cream.

//If I feel like having one of those milk-with-a-little-coffee drinks, skim or 2% and no whip.

I always order without the whip. You can feel the fat coating your mouth afterwards when you eat(drink?) that whipped cream. It's disgusting.

I rather enjoy hot chocolate, and I always get the skim variety (if it's available), but I never put on whip. The cashier usually asks and I laugh saying "that rather defeats the purpose of the skim milk."

On the topic of this drink...eh. It's no worse for you than a dessert.

FredaDeStilleto: Any recommendations for inexpensive coffee I can brew at home are welcome.

I've had to start cutting back on caffeine and coffee in general, plus I started rebelling at the prices for "boutique" brands several years ago. The "50%" caffeine blends in the stores are expensive, and rarely go on sale. So I get one each decaf and regular, and mix them up myself.

Maxwell House Dark Roast and Decaf French Roast in the vacuum packs. Last week they were on sale for $2.99 and $3.99, respectively.

My standard statement is, if it isnt furry or climbing out of the pot, it is good enough to drink. I dont understand why people feel the need to go to Starbucks and pay so much more for some burnt overpriced dirty water.

If I pour the coffee into a glass and I can see light through the glass, it isnt strong enough.

still debating ordering this though (new window)

Go on ebay and search for green coffee beans from regions you like. You can get it for like $5/lbs shipped if you look for good deals. Roast it in the oven, and grind it in a cheap blade grinder. It takes a little while to get the hang of roasting, but once you get it, you won't want to go back to Folger's.

The goofy looking aeropress saved me from heart attack coffee hell. I don't like getting coffee anywhere out now, and all the flavored stuff is WAY too sweet when I just want to taste good coffee. Also, chocolate flavored coffee is never as good as chocolate flavored chocolate anyway.

They haven't gone anywhere. I have a cheap espresso machine that I use to make Starbucks foo-fera, AND a French press for other occasions. Looking at buying a Chemex glass pot and a ceramic hand grinder. As far as already ground stuff goes, oddly enough the Dunkin Donuts original and dark roast aren't terrible.

The other guy who responded to you has great advice. However just my two cents: Nabob.
Just slightly more expensive than the usual Folgers/Maxwell House, but miles more delicious.

Also, before you turn on the coffee maker, add a couple sprinkles of salt to the grounds. Makes a great cup.

I don't agree. I don't really patron Starbucks either, well, unless I'm in a strange city and one is nearby. You have about a 60/40 chance that a small independent place will have shiatty coffee, and Starbucks is consistently a notch above mediocre (their drip coffee, which is all I drink).

I used to work at Starbucks, so I'm getting a kick... (don't judge, it was an easy college job and I literally got to read entire books during my shift. Thank goodness for low traffic stores).

The reason this drink has so many calories is because it's 2/3rds eggnog. Real stuff, not any questionable artificial flavoring unlike the other drinks. If you read the side of any eggnog carton, it says the serving size if 4 oz. So you're consuming approximately 3 servings of it in a venti (20 oz) drink. If you're unaware that a huge cup of eggnog is bad for you, you can't blame Starbucks for it.

I also don't get wound up over attacks on my former coffee conglomerate employer, but when people say things like:
Ed Finnerty: In other news, black coffee from a gas station is still $0.99 and 0 calories.
As a regular black coffee drinker, I feel obliged to point out that Starbucks black coffee is $1.50 and, while it may not appease the palettes of the most sophisticated connoisseurs, it's a hell of a lot better than gas station coffee.

It really is amazing how much money you can make with a shiatty product. Especially when it's food.

I use to eat in restaurants in Maryland on a semi regular basis cause I was working out of town and didn't have a kitchen ( I prefer making my own food ).

I knew places down there that had waiting lines for the privaledge of getting an egg with a big hair sticking out of it.

Costco Kirkland Supreme 100% Columbian. Pretty damn good for the price. You may want to start drinking tea, I have a feeling coffee will be going way up in the future.

Actually, Starbucks played a pretty big part in bringing back Arabica beans into vogue, which are far superior to the Robustica beans that most people associate with cheap American coffee (Folgers, Maxwell House), that was developed to meet the demand for 'cheap and mass produced'. Robustica is an inferior bean (unless you like that muddy flavor, acidic flavor I guess). Now, I really think they overroast their beans to ridiculous lengths and don't particularly like Starbucks, but people who like "plain old coffee" like Folgers are people who don't really like coffee, imho. That said, the lattes and whatnot are closer to hot chocolate than they are coffee.

I do treat myself to ONE tall eggnog latte at this time of year. Yum.

That's because a light frappuccino is not supposed to come with whip. No one ordered it without because at every other Starbucks, it already comes that way...

Plain old Starbucks coffee tastes nasty and burned, so fark that. You have to drink it as espresso so it's palatable.

And on a whim, I just checked what I usually drink, Venti White Chocolate Mocha. I order it my way - skim and no whip - and literally reduce the grams of fat to less than a third what they would be - 22g to 7g. That turns it from stupid bad for you to just a poor decision. And I could be even smarter and just get a tall and that brings it down to 4.5g.

2011-12-04 09:08:29 AM
So basically this is an Imperial pint of eggnog (which is made from egg yolks), with added cream and coffee. Think a traditional British pint mug full of eggnog.

I'm not surprised that it's just a tad fatty.

I am surprised that they think anyone is going to order one.

Meh, I do weight watchers (successfully), and a starbucks (skinny) latte is one of the easiest 'treats' to get yourself when you're out.
a skinny latte is just coffee, skim milk, and some (fake) sugar.

about the only thing better for you is fresh fruit and veggies. which, while nice, are often hard to come by while out and hard to convince yourself are a great treat.

A banana and a skinny latte however, feels like an afternoon snack.

*shrugs*. Haven't tried the eggnog, sounds disgusting.
