ShawnDoc: 3steps: She LIVES in a house worth 1.2 mil.. She doesn't own it, she pays rent. $1200 a month.. too rich for my blood.. but I can't believe it's out of line for Seattle, WA.

$1,200/mo rent is way out of line for a $1.2 million house. Something isn't right there. My guess is the house is owned 100% in her husband's name, and she rents it from him for the $1,200. They're probably legally separated to allow them to keep their income separate, while still remaining married. He makes the cash, she's a stay at home mom/trophy wife, and since she has no income, she qualifies for government assistance.

The funny thing is, more people will get outraged about this, while defending Wall Street and the raping they put the world economy through.

gadian: they're just [not] doing due diligence.

THIS is the part that needs embiggening.

Also - isolated incident, my ass. Politicians talk a grand game on oversight, but what they want at the very most is for the oversight to be brought to bear on the other party's vote-buying boondoggles and not their own.

When they cut back on things like asset checks and anti-fraud measures they call it "streamlining the application process".

Couldn't care less.

The real stealing in this country is done by Wall street and the banksters. If we really cared those scumbags would be under the jail and we would be saving real money.

Weaver95: you know, if she didn't lie on any of the paperwork then she's probably in the clear on the welfare thing.

having huge brass balls and no ability to feel guilty isn't a crime.

She almost certainly lied or withheld information on the welfare forms. The article isn't 100% clear on who owns the house, but it does mention she has a husband. If she or her husband owns the house, then the value of the house alone would have disqualified her for food stamps and rent voucher program, though not for her disability benefits. Even if they don't own the house, but are being allowed to live there, she should have reported the free housing, which would have been considered part of her income.

They're probably rich Randroids who feel self-entitled to government assistance, even though they say other people who actually need assistance are "murderers" and "parasites." Randroids often brag about their "moral right" to defraud the government.

Fark_Guy_Rob: It's funny because, I've never met a single person who says, 'I could have paid less in income taxes, but I figured I already have plenty of money. I decided not to declare X and even though the energy rebate program would have given me $1500 for my new furnace and a/c I decided to just pay the government more money. I've got plenty'

I know plenty of people like that. Their motivation usually isn't "I've got plenty", as much as laziness. For example, I know someone who doesn't fill out taxes in time, preferring to pay the fines. The poor especially are likely to forgo all sorts of social programs for a variety of reasons; sometimes they're not up to the job of figuring out all the loops you have to jump through, simply don't know about the schemes, and a fair share will say "there's some one out there who needs that wheelchair more than me, so I'll keep using this cane".

Come to think of it, I know quite a few people like that.

Bomb Head Mohammed: The thanksgiving dinner that I had to endure consisted of my baby boomer uncles and aunts, each of whom has a house valued at more than $2m and incomes over $150k strategizing on how to retire at 67 to get some extra social security benefits bonus.

Man you'd hate us then. My husband and I moved over the city lines to escape the wage tax once our jobs moved out of the city (and those jobs moved to escape the business tax). We did it for purely financial reasons, and because we don't feel we get 20k+ in services out of our city.

Saving money motivates people. We should be using that fact of human nature to get the results we want, not acting all shocked that we're really all prostitutes.

How could the government allow housing subsidy dollars to someone who openly lives in one of Seattle's most desirable neighborhoods?

That sentence bothers me more than it should. I think it's the use of the word "openly." She "openly" lives in a nice neighborhood in Seattle? It reeks of "She can't be poor, she's in a neighborhood far above the station of poor people!"

Then there's the next paragraph:

A federal official spoke to KING 5 News on condition of anonymity. He says the housing voucher program provides coupons that help low-income people pay their rent. He says it allows people to get out of housing projects and move into the place of their choosing. However, he says a "flaw" is that the program doesn't analyze where people are living, even if it is at a ritzy address that should raise a red flag.

"We'll help you get out of the projects, but don't even think about coming to the GOOD parts of town."

It's an example of legal abuse of the system, but it isn't statistically backed as a significant abuse, and that this is a single incident that gets reported indicates that these abuses don't occur often.

So far I'm not seeing anything all that shocking.

The only real question is who paid for the vacations? Parents? Can you say Spoiled? But not illegal. Live in boyfriend? Husband? If so then she shouldn't be getting the free rent subsidy or food stamps.

This article has all the earmarks of 'total outrage' with really very few facts. I'm thinking I'm not going to worry too much about it.

And you can save a bleeding person a little bit of blood if you put a band-aid on his papercut, doesn't mean he's not going to bleed out from his missing forearm.

Point being, of course, that while this sort of thing evokes outrage because of its brash nature, it isn't necessarily a particularly useful place to find savings in a country where we're still planning for a war that ended 20 years ago with a superpower that doesn't exist.

By all means shut her down, but let's not be stupid and start pretending that this sort of thing is costing us that much compared to the enormous amount of waste we not only tolerate, but celebrate, particularly in the military and medicare.

Furthermore, I doubt there are many people who think there's nowhere to cut spending. Smarter people than yourself tend to recognize that the argument is over where to cut and people who have brains at all tend to recognize that the additional argument is over how much of a tax increase to impose and where to impose it.

I was wondering when we'd have another "rage at people who take advantage of social programs" thread. Clearly this means welfare and food stamps should be abolished and the money that used to fund those programs will be turned into a tax cut for the wealthy.

Yeah - it's a house, and not that much larger than mine (by about 150 sq ft). But usually (and I'm not sure about Washington) there are asset limits for people that are on assistance. Someone living in this house probably crosses those limits.

I agree, it fails the "really?" test. however, let me try this: say there's a dad, mom and 2 kids. and mom was working, but went to stay home with the kids. and now dad's lost his job, and mom is trying to go back to work, but hasn't found anything yet.

Is the house too much now? where do you draw the line?
I'd rather draw it at providing too much assistance than too little.

In your scenario, I'm less outraged.

For the people in TFA, however, this is not the case. Her husband is a practicing chiropractor (I found his practice, too). In fact, the tax bill for this house goes to his practice, rather than the home. I'd imagine that this means they don't live together, but I can't confirm that. (I can't search for other properties he owns in the area because the part of King County's records search that lets you search by name is offline.)

right. but that places the burden on the system to find out what everyone's ex husband is doing, and whether they are providing assistance. What if he were a boyfriend? now we look into everyone's ex boyfriend's?

*shrugs* There should be a perfect system. But there isn't. Assuming you have to err on the side of one or another, do you want this woman AND the mom-dad-2-kids to get assistance, or neither one to get it?

Off with their heads!

If HE got her qualified as disabled, then he's a complete moron. The classification of disabled makes it likely he'll have to pay alimony, or some kind of lifetime maintenance... that is, of course, if the divorce laws in WA are the same as some states I know about.

And, since the guy is a chiropractor, he probably is already very used to gaming the system. A lot of those quacks get fed by ambulance chasers ya know. Very shady business, that.

Media outrage is inversely proportional to the cost value of the system being gamed.

Cucullen: It's a bit crappy that the tax code is written so the richest people end up paying a lower percentage than the poor.

Yeah because we know that the top marginal income tax rate of 37% tax rate is lower than a 0% tax rate....with 47% of the population paying ZERO income tax, you comment makes you sound like a complete farking retard. And before you bring in FICA and other payroll taxes into the discussion, let me remind you that those are "social insurance" taxes are supposed to fully cover SS, medicare, and medicaid....but don't...and are primarily consumed by those 47%.

Maybe the real issue is that we are coddling nearly half the population and we should expect them to at least contribute something to the operation of the federal government and our society instead of simply sitting on their collective asses and collecting a monthly check....suggest you read up on the CCC. Back then people were happy for the work and get a check, compare that to people's entitlement mentality regarding "their" checks today.
