(KING 5 News)   While you were busy trying to make ends meet, a woman in Seattle has been collecting $1200 a month in housing assistance, along with food stamps and living in a 2,500 square-foot home, with gardens and a boat dock, that is valued at $1.2 million   (king5.com) divider line 162

Good for her. If you can figure out a way to steal legally, there's nothing wrong with it. It's the Wall Street way.

you know, if she didn't lie on any of the paperwork then she's probably in the clear on the welfare thing.

having huge brass balls and no ability to feel guilty isn't a crime.

When I was unemployed on FS, the county made me give them my bank account information so the could check for deposits. How the fark did this biatch get away with this?

Good question. And it's another example on the list of thousands for the farkwits out there who whine, "b-b-b-but there's no place to cut government spending." Brainless government supporting farkwits.

This is so disheartening to those who truly need assistance, and who jump through very strictly regimented hoops to obtain a bare minimum of what is needed to get by.

Yes, there are places that are strict and check references/facts thoroughly. Sometimes benefits come with strings
attached (such as entry into job training).

As stated in an earlier post, proof of one's bank account activity is often required.

The holes in the system do need to be closed, so that the resources can go to those who are truly in need, and cheaters can be prosecuted.

Is she a corporate CEO?

2011-12-04 04:13:05 AM
That's really terrible and should make everybody angry.

However, Wall Street CEOs have done far worse than this. They got away with it, too, and the "true conservatives" simply turn their cheek. Now that this woman's being investigated and getting her just desserts, can we look forward to the rats involved in the 7.7 trillion loans getting their just desserts?

/probably not
//they're the ones that made our government their own personal whore, after all

I find the whole argumentation of the feds a bit scary - 'you're on welfare, so you're not allowed to live there'. As in: that place is for rich people. You know, the ones we really protect. On the other hand, if it is impossible to afford rent on such a place with such an income, something fishy *must* be going on. Black income, landlord evading taxes, that sort of thing. And if she owned it (paid for) - do they make you 'eat up' your real-estate when you go on welfare in the US ?

She LIVES in a house worth 1.2 mil.. She doesn't own it, she pays rent. $1200 a month.. too rich for my blood.. but I can't believe it's out of line for Seattle, WA.

She's disabled and on food stamps.

So far I'm not seeing anything all that shocking.

The only real question is who paid for the vacations? Parents? Can you say Spoiled? But not illegal. Live in boyfriend? Husband? If so then she shouldn't be getting the free rent subsidy or food stamps.

This article has all the earmarks of 'total outrage' with really very few facts. I'm thinking I'm not going to worry too much about it.

That was my question, too. They check your financial records when you apply, and while you're on the program, both bank and employment records. If you're married, they check the records of both you and your spouse. How the hell did she get away with world travel while living there and collecting benefits?

Court records show the couple gave money to charities and traveled around the world to exotic places like Turkey, Tel Aviv and resort towns in Mexico.

Clearly this means that we must cut back on disability benefits, housing programs and food stamps and further cut taxes for the "job creators".

Am I the only one who's suspicious that stories like this are getting planted in the media right now?

$1,200/mo rent is way out of line for a $1.2 million house. Something isn't right there. My guess is the house is owned 100% in her husband's name, and she rents it from him for the $1,200. They're probably legally separated to allow them to keep their income separate, while still remaining married. He makes the cash, she's a stay at home mom/trophy wife, and since she has no income, she qualifies for government assistance.

The funny thing is, more people will get outraged about this, while defending Wall Street and the raping they put the world economy through.

When I used UI a few years ago, they got my bank info for direct deposit, but they never monitored what I spent. In fact, they never monitored if I looked for work at all, so long as I signed up for all the job banks they required. If this lady can fit the criteria and her state's monitoring requirements, I have no problem with her using the system. She's doing it properly, they're just no doing due diligence.

You can live in a million-dollar mansion and spend every dime of your UI on ice cream if you wish. It isn't considered a poverty program -- it's revenue insurance. In fact, the more money you make, the more money you make on unemployment. They're completely different.

When you fill out your taxes each year - don't try to maximize your deductions? If your accountant/website/1040 instructions say, 'X is deductible' wouldn't you deduct it?

It's funny because, I've never met a single person who says, 'I could have paid less in income taxes, but I figured I already have plenty of money. I decided not to declare X and even though the energy rebate program would have given me $1500 for my new furnace and a/c I decided to just pay the government more money. I've got plenty'

And I've seen it across a wide range of income levels. Nobody wants to pay more than they have to. But, for some reason, people get upset when other people also try to min/max their own tax burden/benefit.

This reminds me of the story that came out this week of another privileged Northwest couple. He's in finance, and they live in a custom-built $1.5 million eyesore (new window). If you read the comments at the link and in the original WSJ article, you'll find that the wife had recently got herself sent to a cyclocross championship abroad by appealing to the local bike community for donations. People are pissed.

Yeah it pretty much to be expected that people will do this. It's a bit crappy that the tax code is written so the richest people end up paying a lower percentage than the poor.
The real bad part is that the ways that they do this end up sucking wealth from the economy and destabilizing the financial markets.
