Where's the pic of the African guy with the pet hyena on a chain?

2011-12-03 07:58:40 PM
1] i'd put 40 pounds of choice cuts, 10 pounds of rancid poodle brains, and 5 gallons of kitten blood just out of the camera's view.
2] wait
3]fame and profit

Trust me, you want to keep them at a distance. Yikes.

For being a shy and nocturnal creature, mom's sure got some big, sharp teeth.

Puppies are cute though.

I don't know why people are always hating on Hyenas, just look at those pictures, they're really cute and well behaved canines. But of course the media only reports on them when they eat a child or something, while in reality there are plenty of Hyenas out there which have never eaten a child. It's all just media fearmongering.

If they eat the child, and everyone else within earshot, and nobody is left to hear the screams, does that mean the child did not get eaten?

Hyenas are far more like cats than dogs.

Look, Ma! There's a big light in the sky, just like the door to our den.
That's the son, pups. It's the den of the Sky Hyena.

***

We're twins!
We're all twins, stupid. Hyenas always have twins.

*** That's our Ma. She has a face only a puppy could love. Half bat, half dog, haunts the dreams of humans who haven't seen a hyena for 100,000 years.

Sun. Not son. Crap.

And it was the best one.

The female stripped hyena has a pseudo-penis.

This led to the medieval belief that male hyenas give birth. Presumably the pseudo-penis prevents sexual discrimination or allows the female to have more say in who she mates with.

Of course, in civilized species it's not necessarily to have a dick to have a say. It's enough to have the talking-stick. Or a gun.

It also helps that female hyenas are bigger, stronger and nastier than male hyenas.

That's the SPOTTED hyena, you ignorant slut. Did you even glance at the article? Spotted hyenas over in Africa are a feminist wonder: The female is larger than the male, dominant to him, runs the pack, marks the territory, AND has the babies and does most of the fighting and hunting. And has a long clitoris that looks like a dick.

STRIPED hyenas are monogamous pair-bonded animals that are smaller, mostly eat small mammals and reptiles, and are much shyer and reclusive than their spotted brethren.

Keep your hyenas straight.

If you read that entire page you'll be extremely confused over what they are exactly, like i am now. They seem to be, both?

2011-12-03 10:14:53 PM
For added fun, they have huge, pouch-like anal glands that they can turn inside out. These glands produce two different types of greasy, oily paste that they smear on objects.

Having worked with a tame striped hyaena, I can tell you that if that paste gets on your clothing, it *never* comes out.

Huh. Learn something new every day.

People hate on Hyenas because...well I think it really is just the classic nonsense viewpoint of thinking that lions are noble hunters and hyenas are dirty scavengers. The fearmongering is much simpler; they really are wild animals that have *not* been domesticated, and while you might be able to get some to act pretty darned tame, they (as a group) are still going to chew off the occasional face.

There is something primal about looking at a Hyena. Its like your DNA is screaming "That shiat'll fark you up!". I get it with spiders too, but not with snakes, oddly enough. And farking caves. I know there are entire civilizations that lived in caves and cave like dwellings, but every fiber in me screams "Don't go in there! It'll tear you apart!" and then I vaguely know what being torn apart feels like...which is odd because, generally, people who are torn apart don't live to pass on genetic memory. Don't know what the "IT" in this equation is either. Cave Hyena maybe. Or that dumb ass Bob who likes to jump out and grab you for the hell of it. Damn you, Cave Bob.

Actually, it's the feliformia suborder. You are thinking of the felidae family, which is commonly referred to as "felines", but they are a parrallel family, that of Hyaenidae.

On another note, did no one else think, when looking at those pics, those were taken in a zoo? The rock wall in the background just looks a bit too "planned' to be natural, in my opinion...

I love hyenas, and these pics are -adorable-. Grim Eyes would be proud ^_^

Also, hyenas, of whatever species, don't deserve their bad rep. They're actually quite intelligent, due to their highly complex social structures, and have a higher percent of successful hunts than any other savanna mammal. Plus, they are made of cute. *hugs hyena plushie* Slate did an awesome article on them: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/green_room/2010/04/sa d_yowlers.html It really is fascinating. If I could get funding, I'd study them in the wild.

Hyenas are NOT canines. They are far more like giant weasels than canines, and are more closely related to felines.

There is a wildlife sanctuary near me that has a male spotted hyena that I had the privelige of meeting when he was > 2mo old. Since then they have named him Ed for some reason.
