(Yahoo) Interesting SEC launches investigation into financing of new stadium. Since this will be on the Sports tab, Subby expects lots of lame jokes about why the Southeastern Conference would care about a baseball stadium   (sports.yahoo.com) divider line 33

awww, guess this means mine's going red. Ah well.

So lemmie get this straight.. not only did the Marlins get Miami to buy them a shiny guady new stadium, there's possible malfeasance involved as well? Have fun with that, citizens of Miami-Dade.

And who elected those morons on the commission? The voters deserve the government they vote for.

Well, if it helps, the SEC is good at baseball as well.

Didn't two SEC teams play in this years CWS Championship game?

Come to think of it, 3 of the final 4 teams in the CWS were from the SEC.

David Samson does a segment on Dan Lebatard's radio show every week. This one should be interesting to say the least.

SEC employees who investigate corruption too thoroughly don't get 7-figure consulting jobs after they retire.

First, we needed a new stadium; Sun Life-Joe Robbie-Dolphins-Dolphin-Pro Player and whatever else I am missing didn't work for baseball (went to the first-ever Marlins game in 1993, 196-year-old Charlie Hough got the 3-2 win).

Second, why is anyone surprised in Miami-Dade?

Third, the new unis are faaaabulous.

Fourth, I am one of the few Fish fans.

The NCAA baseball selection committee is more biased than the BCS.

That being said, the SEC is one of the better baseball conferences, and they are "the most supported" baseball conference in terms of average attendance.

And I know the article isn't about "that" SEC, but meh.

There should be a federal law prohibiting cities from funding privately-owned sports stadium construction (or the mask of allowing stadium profits to be retained by said privately-owned sports organizations).

That's what killed the deal here for Key Arena and lead to the Sonics leaving. If people in Oklahoma are stupid, that's OK by me.

Perhaps that's why Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Dept. had a 15 year backlog of work to finish and only able to hire 1 position for the job when I went there for a job interview last spring...

so now can we agree never to spend tax-payer money on stadiums for farking private sports teams holding cities hostage?

Lt. Col. Angus: Dear subby,

I'll just leave this here:

Serious question: are these chapel-like baseball stadiums in SEC and southern ACC schools used for short-season minor league play after school lets out? I know the one at Penn St. is, but it seems like a waste if these big SEC fields are dormant June through August.

2011-12-04 04:37:40 AM
...but instead subby gets lots of whiny comments about why the SEC totally cares about baseball stadiums.

Cewley: thanks to the morons on the commission, Dade county taxpayers are asked to bend over and grab their ankles.

Based on what is hinted at in the article, you can't really call them morons unless and until they're convicted and thrown into prison, minus their (allegedly) handsome payoffs.

Florida State has a beautiful baseball stadium that sits next to the football stadium and other than the band doing a warm up concert before football home games, it just sits there. Maybe a coaches camp or two, but that's it.
