2003-10-08 04:06:46 PM
I always thought it was from all the kitten killing......

2003-10-08 04:14:23 PM
Because we need something to do when our partners won't have sex with us?

2003-10-08 04:21:18 PM
because we're tired of trying to find a cure for cancer.

2003-10-08 04:38:03 PM
Because there's nothing on TV?

2003-10-08 04:39:40 PM
Because cancer research is obviously worthless

2003-10-08 04:44:41 PM
Cause we drink too much?

2003-10-08 04:53:13 PM
Cool article. It sounds like sleep is the human equivalent of the defrag (and our memories are stored really haphazardly throughout the day).

2003-10-08 04:57:35 PM
I was thinking of it more like: We write source code during the day and it gets compiled at night.

2003-10-08 05:04:56 PM
Because the drugs have either:
1) Worn off
2) Kicked in

2003-10-08 05:12:20 PM
LOL I_Can't_Believe_It's_Not_Smegma
but add change 'drugs' to drugs/alcohol

mmmm sleep

What Unfreakable said.
If there weren't so many infomercials, I'd never sleep.

2003-10-08 06:20:44 PM
I heard we evolved to sleep at night so we were forced to stay in one spot and not make much noise during the time of day that lots of predators are out and we can't see well.

"We all have the experience of going to sleep with a question and waking up with the solution," said Daniel Margoliash, a professor of neurobiology at the University of Chicago.

No shiat, that really happens? I always thought it was a wives tale. I can't even remember my own name in the morning.

Finally, farkers can stop saying "still no information on why we sleep" when scientists do a stupid study.

2003-10-08 07:20:35 PM
Your brain is like your hard drive. You read and write to it all day. At night, you have to defrag it.

Just reading that headline made me yawn. Yawn. Ahh...

2003-10-08 07:22:38 PM
Cause we act funny if we don't sleep

2003-10-08 07:22:45 PM
That's friggin great, but now why are we tired? Brain cache full and needs to be dumped to nearline storage?

2003-10-08 07:22:53 PM
A while ago I read an article on sleep research. The researchers didn't seem to have any problems coming up with reasons sleep was necessary, and one of them said, "The real question is, why are we _awake_ so much?"

2003-10-08 07:23:41 PM
My client, Cthulhu sure likes to sleep. He doesn't snore but he does talk in his sleep, and boy it is wierd. He was sleep talking and kept saying "Down with Big Brother".

2003-10-08 07:23:42 PM
read article. boring. but now i can sleep. *yawn*

I'll (yawn) continue the (yawn) yawn war...*yawn*

SoulAssasin

If you're tired, you are too fragmented, and are loosing efficiency. You have to sleep and defrag, to avoid brain thrashing.

2003-10-08 07:25:12 PM
Sometimes in my dreams,I'm doing so much activity I wake up tired.

2003-10-08 07:27:40 PM
Gotta like that pic at the top of the story... fap fap fap

2003-10-08 07:30:59 PM
one of the reasons we yawn is because our body is low on oxygen. So yawning is "contagious" because you subconsciously become aware that your body is deprived of oxygen. Just though I'd share because i yawned when i only read your yawns.

No way can memories alone be the reason for needing to sleep. Think about it. Name one mammal that does not sleep. Now imagine this from an evolutionary standpoint: Why would every mammal evolve this thing called "sleep" which leaves them completely defenseless for several hours per day. Survival of the fittest should have weeded out sleep a long time ago. There must be some deep basic need for sleep that evolution hasn't found a way around. Are memories that important to the evolution of my cat? I don't think so.

Yep, That's the way I read it too. Good call.

We need sleep because God entrusted our brains' operating system to Microsoft. And just like Windows -- you gotta reboot the damned thing at least once a day just to keep it working right.

2003-10-08 07:39:14 PM
Great. Now why can't I sleep?

2003-10-08 07:40:44 PM
Their findings don't explain why most species use some form of sleep.

My theory is that sleep evolved as an energy retention mechanism during the time of day least condusive to a species' sensory organs. No use exerting energy when your eyes can't see in the dark or your accute hearing is rendered useless when predators can see you easily during the day.

Of course my theory fails to take dreaming into account, but I don't know enough about varying species' dream habits. I know my dog dreams, so the evolutionary D4t must be quite old and fairly far reaching.

Great name, Ooklah The Mok. Perhaps my favorite 1980's cartoon futuristic robot/ape of all time!

2003-10-08 07:41:13 PM
It's because you need something to do during that period when you sober up. Staying awake for that sucks, and you can't stay drunk all the time. And have a job.

2003-10-08 07:43:59 PM
Isn't it obvious that this "Sleep" is really just when the aliens give us our new instructions and hear our reports? We're not "asleep"; our memories have just been wiped!

2003-10-08 07:44:51 PM
Because I'm unemployed?

2003-10-08 07:48:19 PM
Thanks waitaminute... I was thinking I'd go with Thundarr, but that seemed so self-aggrandizing. I wanted a name that would resonate with hipster-slackers, yet still be accessible to the masses. Obviously, Gleek would have been a suitable moniker, but the inevitable "fap fap fap" of Jana fans (or, what the hell, Zan fans too) would have diminished the impact. Orko was my next choice.

2003-10-08 07:48:32 PM
The poster needs some sleep as the title is not what the article states

2003-10-08 07:49:11 PM
Because if I had to stay awake all the time and deal with all the jackoffs in the real world 24-7, I'd go on a killing spree.

2003-10-08 07:49:56 PM
That makes about 100 reasons for why we need sleep.

one of the reasons we yawn is because our body is low on oxygen. So yawning is "contagious" because you subconsciously become aware that your body is deprived of oxygen. Just though I'd share because i yawned when i only read your yawns.

I'm pretty sure thats not true. I see studies all the time "proving" why we yawn and such.

2003-10-08 07:51:32 PM
Because "staying awake together" just doesn't have the same ring to it?

Fark Me To Tears, running Win XP, haven't restart my computer in about a month.

Because the mattress companies would all go out of business if we didn't?

Fark Me To Tears, running Win XP, haven't restart my computer in about a month.

So that means that you haven't been adding any security updates to your machine (installation requires re-booting) ... Good for you!!!

Another Angry Goth, you gotta turn it on for it to count. ;-)
