Obviously, recovered memories are a tool of satan....

I wonder if my dad is somehow involved in this. He's one of those people who bought the 'Satanic ritual abuse is real and people are having orgies and eating babies' line, and consequently he started a counseling service, listened to too many people who all told him how wonderful he was, and consequently lost all sense of perspective.

If he answers, it's a religion. If he tries to charge you money, it's a cult.

Does the hypnotic suggestion thing really work for anyone? As far as I know, it doesn't work unless you believe and accept the suggestion.

Well, typically, cults are headed up by one extremely charismatic leader whose word is generally law among the followers. Churches don't typically have that (although the televangelists do push that distinction a lot).

Let's get this out of the way:
You said "raped by a Satanic cult" twice.

Hmmm. This might explain that god-awful infected ingrown toenail my friends kid had a few weeks ago. She does all the Satanic stuff. Listens to Rock and Roll, smokes weed, does Yoga and is a 2nd Degree Black Belt. She's even living in sin with her boyfriend. I should tell her. This must be stopped!

A cult usually tries to separate its flock from the rest of society as much as possible and makes it very difficult for their members to leave. Also in a cult giving some type of service or money is mandatory.

And I think they occasionally rip people's hearts out and lowers them into pits of lava.

Law schools should be closed every six years to give everyone a break. Maybe they could limit the number of licenses like they do for liquor establishments.

Stories like this exist purely due to attorneys taking the case and law graduates agreeing to hear such cases. Coffee is hot, be careful not to trip while walking, insane people sometimes create fantasies, etc.

Not simple at all.
I was working in a store near a reggae fest once and told my coworkers to survey randomly the white rastafarians coming in about their beliefs.
I asked them to see how long a trustafarian could go on about their particular brand of stupidity before getting stuck on the weed principal.
It was sad to watch kids innocently ask about religious origins of smelly, stinky, worthless humans beings about their Highly Slacky cult and watch them avoid "ZION" and go straight for "SMOKE MON" while acting pious.

Zionism is the belief that true believers (see the recursion here?) should return to the Palestinian homeland (apparently this is Jamaica) yet never even getting a job to but a one way ticket for their unwashed asses to go there while soaking their B.O in rotting patchouilli and burning a product that, until the financial crisis, had a matched price for gold, ounce per ounce. Also, we discovered that Rasta, Mon, and Ska, and Jaaaaa, and Dread, were interchangeable nouns, verbs, adverbs, articles, and highly worshiped bulletin points.

Much like Papists create a slush fund for kiddy diddlers, Rastas convert cash into weed and oxidize it .
Any religion is only a cover for "high"er crimes.

If you have to invent an invisible friend, you're nuts, and should be removed from the general population.

Toleration of this insanity has caused only harm to the betterment of mankind.

It does work to help remember details that may be in you subconscious. Meditation and relaxation also work. You would be amazed at all the little details of your life bouncing around inside your noggin. But it is stuff like what you had for breakfast on a particular day two months ago.

Sorry, I didn't actually answer your question. Hypnotic suggestion does work to some degree. You can be led to believe a false memory. The memory would feel like a dream but a therapist could convince you that it was a real memory.

I'm betting the drugs helped quite a bit.

She was struggling with anorexia.
So ignoring the incredibly stupidity of the situation, was she cured? Does she just not want to pay? Has her insurance reneged on the bill?

I had an acquaintance that has his marriage ruined by just this sort of crap. These highly ethical doctors get elbow deep into an individuals mind and then don't know what to do and then default to the easiest thing, fear. For some reason, a second opinion never occurs to the patient. I wonder why?

Just one more case of the so-called-doctor walking away counting the cash while the trusting patient is left a gibbering mess for their family and society to support for the rest of their wretched life.

Of course this is Funks News so the gloves are off as far as veracity is concerned.

Though there are often common features to cults, they are frequently quite unique. Sometimes a cult leader is not at all charismatic but just has a way of bullying those who would flock to him. Sometimes there's no leader at all but rather a collective that gathers around an idea. Sometimes the cult is not even remotely religious but based upon secular fascinations; there are political cults and cults of personality.

It's complicated, and it's sad.

chaddsfarkprefect: Law schools should be closed every six years to give everyone a break

I think it should be more difficult to get a law degree. I realize you have to memorize a lot of shiat and learn how to argue but I know about a dozen lawyers through college and most of them are morons. I had to guide a couple of them through the few math courses they had to take. There's a reason why most people hate lawyers and no, the old cliche, "You hate lawyers until you need one" isn't true. We hate you then too.

FTA:

"Elizabeth Loftus, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, said there is no scientific evidence to suggest that the brain can store away bad memories then have them suddenly emerge."

While I can't dispute "scientific evidence", I can say that it is possible. When I was born our family lived near the ocean and I spent the first two years of my life there. We then moved to a dry area with no bridges in the area. As I was growing up, I had no conscious memories of living in my birthplace (other kids would always ask me about it and I tried to remember any details). On occasion, I would fall out of bed. When I did, in the instant I fell, I would have a vivid dream about looking down at the top of the masts of boats and the falling towards them. I finally asked my mother about the dream. She got angry and said "Damm your father, I told him you were getting scared when he put you on that bridge railing but he said you enjoyed it". She described the bridge near where I was born where it had happened. As an adult I visited the location and sure enough the view from the bridge exactly matched the one in my dream.

vudukungfu: If you have to invent an invisible friend, you're nuts, and should be removed from the general population.

You know, atheists are a minority of the population. If you want to make headway with the majority of the population, perhaps explaining to us that your ultimate goal is lock us up in concentration camps or whatever isn't such a good idea.

I mean, good farking grief, the new atheism movement is producing a segment just as extreme in their views as any Evangelical Christian and just as certain they are right.

casual disregard: It's complicated, and it's sad.

It's sad in individual cases, but if it weren't for the human propensity to gather in large groups and go forth raping and pillaging in the name of an abstract set of ideas, we'd still be cracking antelope bones on the steppes. Perhaps it's more of a case of "a sword that cuts both ways".
