The bill passed Tuesday comes nearly a month after British prime minister, David Cameron, threatened to withhold aid from nations violating gays rights, sparking outrage in Africa where leaders interpreted it as "colonial" display of power.

Pumping money into a failing state and propping up their economy = their entitlement as human beings.
Telling them to knock that crap off or you'll stop sending money = colonialism.

Kreist, they're acting like a bunch of spoiled children. Give them a piece of candy and they love you. Tell them "no" and they call you everything in the book and hate you.

Why do first-world countries get involved in this shiat?

Let me pull out two talking points of Libs:

1 How dare we tell the world what to do?
2. How dare they lock up people for crimes that go against their culture?

And this is exactly why Africa is the only continent (except Antarctica) that I haven't visited. I suppose I could go to South Africa since they actually have legal same-sex marriage while the US does not, but there's no way I'm giving my tourist dollars to countries that do things like this legislation.

And we're not suppose to question/criticize something because they say it's a cultural thing?

So, they were OK with apartheid because it was just the culture of South Africa?
Was racial segregation in the US South just fine because it was just the culture of the region?
I mean, hey, it was just part of European culture to colonize Africa, right?

Just because something is part of a culture does not make that something right or beyond question.

A bunch of gay men locked up together with other gay men in close quarters where they shower with gay men and sleep in the same cells with gay men. I would think they would love this.

Dir Sirs,
I am going to jail for 14 years and I need a state side account to keep my money safe from seizure. For only the cost of the transfer fee (by check) please help me wire the money to a safe location and I will share one tenth with you split up over 14x12months of equal payments. On a personal note, I am being jailed because the love of my life has the same dangly bits as me. Please join me in praying that my country men see the light of justice and freedom and justice like your country does. I feel it is only proper to inform you before we enter in a binding agreement.
thank you sirs.

To be fair, Nigeria would basically be most people's second guess, and the only one where it'd be really surprising is South Africa.

Perhaps they can lock up their pedophiles with some children.

Benevolent Misanthrope: Why do first-world countries get involved in this shiat?

Look at Somalia - we don't need more countries like that.

If by donating you can keep a country free of total anarchy, you have:
- fewer immigrants (sure, they're going to Europe, but once they have a passport...)
- a centralised government you can dominate into giving you free access to resources and allow your military free passage.
- less radicalization (don't have to be muslims to be batshiat)

You're trolling, but it should be pointed out that a lot of these governments have regular visits from American evangelicals on what "God would want" and place a significant role in their policy-making.
Someone smarter and more knowledgeable than me could name the organizations, but I think "Family" was in the name of at least one of them.

Well, I'm a liberal.

1. I think the US should always stand up for human rights both in the US and around the world. No, I don't believe that necessarily means invading other nations for every human rights violation.
2. As far as culture goes, see my post at 2011-12-02 11:54:57 PM.

1. Human rights are human rights. The world has a right to criticize countries that violate them.

2. So if they were locking up Jews instead we should turn a blind eye as well?

Perhaps I should re-phrase... Why do first-world countries still feel the need to atone for the fact that they once had colonies? Treat them like grown-up nations. Stop propping them up. Stop meddling. Trade with them instead of keeping them as colonies in all but name.

Hey, cman. They also cut out womens' clitorises, slice off their labia and sew the vaginal opening shut so only urine and menstrual blood flow, and this (obviously) without their consent. I suppose you're cool with that, too? Is that just on a par with a fraternity prank, like waterboarding?

Human rights trump culture. No, we don't need to be sticking ourselves everywhere and dictating culture, but we are a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which means we are obligated to defend them. This is a blatant and obvious violation of human rights.

'scuse me, gotta pry this hook outta my cheek...

It is very sickening what these people are doing, and I do feel that we should do something about it.

buckler: Human rights trump culture

I'm constantly amazed by people who say, "you can't judge another culture". Oh, hell yes, I can. I judge by what I feel is right. I don't care if your culture feels otherwise. My sister shut the hell up when she tossed the "you can't judge" line at me and I retorted with, "then why are you throwing a hissy fit about female circumcision? It's part of their culture."

Ordinarily I'm not for Imperialism, but a strong case could be made for it here. If they didn't want to be conquered and oppressed, maybe they should try a little harder not to be such complete backwards dickwads to their own people.

Well, I'm sorry if I misjudged you, but the initial comment you made about "libs'" views kinda torqued me off a bit. I try really hard not to generalize, even though I might fail at times, but as a left-leaning centrist, I hate to be generalized too.

Fair enough, but start digging and the UK still has economic ties to Nigeria, so that's why. And it's because they were once a colony.

It's like watching your favorite mall with ties to your mayor that goes out of business. You wonder why it didn't happen years ago, but then you realize what has been propping it up all those years when it should have gone out of business.

Oddly enough, they seem to want to share huge amounts of it with strangers in the US.

Yep, no way, unless they're countries that lock up gays under section 377A of their penal code and happen to be named "Singapore," according to your own travel map. Meanwhile, South Africa is one of fewer than 10 countries on the planet where gays have full equality under the law.

Next excuse? Scary lions, hippos, and black people? ;)
