Well, it's South Dakota, not 12th Century Japan. White men in South Dakota are not very good samurais.

Each shot hit Hall in his upper thighs, Rud said, which is where officers are trained to aim.

Aw, nuts.

Oh sure shooting someone in the nuts with beanbags is not lethal........

/So when is the news article on the guy going to the hospital to have have ball sack amputated from severe swelling?
//Que the pic of guy with elephants disease of his ball sack(100? pounds and he carried an egg crate to rest on).

This will confuse people who think cops are supposed to kill anytime it's technically justifiable.

If you're going to chose suicide by cop:

a) use a gun, not a sword
b) take as many of the farking bastards with you as you can. Or at least kneecap them if you're opposed to killing.

The Bible's quite specific about killing. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

It's an East-river/West-river thing here in SD. East side is white-collar and west is blue-collar, no insult intended. Most of the state news comes out of Sioux Falls on the East side, because we're arrogant.

/Tourism is on the West side at Mt Rushmore and the Black Hills, so they pay a lot of our bills.

They had been adventurers until they got shot in the knee, then they became guards. Now you're advocating another round of career change? That's a very stressful thing to do to a bloke that just wants to shout "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM!"

My family went there when I was thirteen I think. Loved the Black Hills. Though one day we were all stuck in our pop-up camper because of a huge rainstorm.

/Cops did what they were suppose do. Like Hell I'm getting anywhere close to a guy with a sword.
// A true samurai could have cut the beanbags while they were in the air.

I guess the cops decided to engage him in a game of Boss Across.

This is where you and I differ.

In American, any given weekend saw me with my medieval recreation gear in a footlocker in the trunk.

I recon if I saw someone going apeshiat with a sword, I'd do something smart like call police, shoot him, or hit him with my car.

But if he was just stalking around being menacing, and I had time, I'd armor up and go talk him down. The beauty of people who go nuts with swords is that they don't really know how to use them properly. All wrist, usually. They're not cuttin' through maille and probably have no idea how to deal with someone who's got a long pole.

True but medieval armor and weaponry aren't exactly police issue. Though I would be a cop in a heartbeat if I could stroll around in plate mail with "Police" on it.
/Yes I know it would be as hot as a Fark Political Flamewar but it would be worth it.

Or common. Notice I specified weekend and the footlocker it was all in.

Although honestly, I doubt police would WANT plat armor. It's great against steel weaponry, but it's heavy, hot as balls, and you could punch through it with any handgun except maybe a .22 but I wouldn't wanna risk it.

Also, if you've ever seen mace in action, you'd probably not want to have giant steel lobster tails over your hand if you should get sprayed with it.

"Augggh, my eyes hurt!" hands up to rub them "Auugh, my eyes are scratched out!" bad juju.

But a dude with two katana like swords? Even if they were real and not just cheap wall hangers a long pole will stop him. That's what the Japanese police in the samurai ages actually used. In fact, they still have long poles to catch criminals. They look like the lettter Y only with a very long base and the part you pin someone to the ground with is covered in springs that slide so the bad guy can't get any leverage on it to turn the pole around. They keep them in schools in case of intruders.

The armor is just a because I would totally take the chance of getting in a sword fight because... well, how many times in a life will years and years of fencing come in handy?

Kinda reminds me of the old Vaudeville "bad act" hooks.

The less-lethal shotguns stand out from regular pump shotguns because of their orange forends. Rapid City officers are also armed with Tasers, handguns and assault rifles.

Made me think for a minute "Like they do to a kids toy?" But no, this is more like it.
ep.yimg.com

They are just chambering bean bag rounds into standard shotguns. I presume they don't stock bean bag and buck shot at the same time, just in case.

Kudos to police officers who are trained in and use the appropriate level of force.

/when the hell did that become so rare?

What are "Ninja-type" swords? That's like saying "he had 'mammal-type' teeth."

On the next line: "Rapid City Lt. Dan Rud...blah blah blah,,, in the city near the Black Hills." That's pretty west river in my book.

This. The AP story came out of SF, but the incident happened in Rapid.

Glad to see the cops showed restraint.

I'm kind of assuming this happened at the Alpine Motel, rather than Alpine Inn. Some dumbass with a wallhanger daisho?

Everybody was kung fu fighting! Those bean bags were fast as lightning.
