Good. I'd make him miss the rest of the season, but at least he has this enforced right away.

Good.

Doubt the suspension will do anything to change his behavior on the field, though.

He can use the couple of weeks off to arrange his family room so he has a comfortable seat to watch the playoffs on TV.

He has done as much as anybody to spoil the Lions chances.

Look at the college program that begat him.

Pelini is a classless boor.

I really don't understand why Suh even bothered with an appeal. Did he think that after further review no one would think he's an asshole? Man up and take the two weeks off.

Woo hoo, that means the Saints will miss him.

/Not that the Lions were going to beat us anyway...

The NFL should have made an example out of Suh here, it missed a great opportunity here.

Suh: Two game suspension is not a fitting punishment here.
NFL: Thanks for your appeal, we revisited it, went over all of the facts and realized you were right, we should have suspended you for 4 games. You are now suspended for 4.

He had a chance and nothing to lose. Why wouldn't he?

It reminds me of exam grading for undergrads. If you got any points taken off, you may as well appeal to the professor, there is nothing to lose. Some professors even tell you they reserve the right to take off points if necessary but that's just a scare tactic so not everyone asks for a re-grade. I really have no idea why everyone doesn't just ask for a regrade, worst case scenario you get back a "no."

I'd be to ashamed to appeal. Then again, Suh obviously has neither shame nor a moral compass, so I pretty much answered my original question.

No, they are not. It would be funny, and the NFLPA would have kittens, but no, they can't.

I think this early in his career it sends a message.

Look, I get why the Lions are trying to change their image from laughingstock to a tough team...but Suh's actions of late have been over the top.

I'm sure the union required/pressed him to do this, but all of you Lions haters can go ahead and have fun with this.

Bottom line, he's the best DPlayer in the NFL and he's going to be around for a lotta years.

Everyone has bad days, but yeah that wasn't expected. One bad day doesn't make him lose the position as the best CB playing today.

I have no particular hatred for the Lions, and yes, Suh is a great player. Still doesn't make him a decent human being.

everything i've read about the community work he's done in detroit and lincoln would lead me to believe that he's probably a decent human being. he appears to have problems controlling his anger on the field and might be just a little bit stubborn.

He might be the best tackler, pass rusher, or pursuit guy in the NFL, but he is a horrible PLAYER. Anybody that would generate the kind of penalties he does, and get himself suspended during the playoff hunt, is not a "player".

Not even close. Too many stupid penalties at 15 yards a pop and now his antics have gotten him suspended. Once he gets his shiat in order...maybe...

/shiat at least fake it. That might have gone a long way to getting maybe 1 game instead of two.

Also, tell me an NFL team that wouldn't take him to build a Defense around. No doubt it's regrettable, but not as big a deal as it's being made. I like him as a Lion for another decade or so.

2011-12-02 09:12:27 PM
Considering the time in the season, two games is almost half of all the remaining games, so in retrospect it is kind of harsh.

Good thing on the appeal though, the NFL seems to always reduce on appeal, so not doing it sometimes is good.

Paraphrasing Ross Tucker from Football Today on espn, it's to set precedent for the next guy and the next 5 guys after him for this sort of thing. Suh might have wanted to serve it immediately but who knows. I doubt he's THE difference against the Saints and if they don't beat Minnesota they should commit seppuku on the field in front of the whole Ford family.

This other article from the same site was a fun read. Started as the reactions of Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Grant to Suh's suspension, then devolved into Rodgers talking about Kyle Vanden Bosch:

"If you have a camera on him the entire game, and we watch the film, he is late getting to a lot of plays, and he just lays on guys, and stays on there," Rodgers said. "He probably did that at least a half-dozen times. So he's laying on me, and I'm laying there. We threw a pass, completed, and he's like, 'I got you good, that had to hurt.' And I'm like, 'You hit me good, that was a good hit.' And he goes, 'Ohh, yeah.' And I'm like, 'You're probably getting a penalty, though.' He goes, 'No way.'

"I think someone finally came to pull him off me, because he probably would have laid there for a while. And I was like, 'Yeah, you got me on the chin there, it's probably a penalty.' And he goes, 'Noooo.' And then he saw the penalty flag, and he started to go crazy, similar to the fashion when he got an offside call last year, at home. He proceeded to yell at the head ref that it was Suh that was offside and not him. 'Nooo, it was Suh. Suuuuhhhhh.' I mean, he's crazy on the field. And if you watch the game, you see he wears those red contacts. He has a crazy motor. He wears red contacts on game day; I think he enjoys that perception that he's a little bit off."

That just reads like something out of a bad movie. A hilarious bad movie, but a bad movie still.

The obvious comparison is a speeding ticket. You got caught, you know you're guilty, but you still take it to court because every once in a while the officer doesn't show up (so you get off completely), and pretty much every other time you get a reduced penalty from the judge.

That said, having a former offensive lineman review the case was a pretty nice touch by the NFL. :)

I'm not defending Suh and obviously he's a dirty player but some of the outrage on here is ridiculous.

This.

Haynesworth stomped on a guys face, that's worlds apart from Suh's stomp. Haynesworth's 5 game suspension is the longest on the field related suspension, Suh is now tied for the second longest. Equate it to baseball and it's around a 20 game suspension. The punishment is where it should be.

/Appeals are in the hands of the NFLPA and Goodell told Suh that he should go through the appeals process.
//Why would you not?

It's a shame he couldn't serve the 2 games AFTER the saints game.

Then he'd miss the DET/OAK game...

No, the way Stafford has been playing and the way the Saints have been playing at home, I doubt he would be the difference. But the NFLPA wasn't going to let him not appeal without throwing its weight around. this happens with the unions in sports quite often. Flashback to a number of years ago when the Rangers were trying to get out from under the A-Rod contract, they had a deal in place that would have sent him to Boston, but Boston wanted him to renegotiate his deal to take less per year. And A-Rod was completely willing to do it until Don Fehr and the MLBPA intervened and nixed the deal. It wasn't about what A-Rod wanted. The MLBPA didn't want to see that precedent set of a player taking less money to get moved to another team. So, the only team that could afford that contract ended up with him instead.

He is 24 years old and apparently kind of volatile. I wonder if his coaches prepped him before that press conference? If they did and he still went with that excuse then I have no sympathy. If they didn't then they are as much to blame for that gaffe.

Of course any NFL team would want him but he isnt doing the Lions (or any other team that he would be on) any good by being thrown out of a game and then getting 2 more games on top of it when they are trying to claw their way into a playoff spot. Maybe he will learn from this suspension and he will keep his cool in the future.

/fwiw I was hoping the Lions would make the playoff after how they started. They are a fun team to watch and have been in the shiatter for so long.
