These people steal $50 million (and that's just one account) and nobody is going to see a day of jail. I could steal a pack of smokes from the gas station and get 5 years. I guess the key to getting away with stealing is to steal REALLY big.

This reminds me of an old line by the Donald. It was something along the lines of if you're a thousand dollars in debt it's your problem, if you're a Billion dollars in debt it's the bank's problem.

Interesting enough, this joojooflop is not actually a justification for Glass-Steagal, a law which put a firewall between depository institutions and their investment operations. In this case, MF Global's principals gambled with their customers' brokerage accounts. Already illegal, so the only thing lacking is a credible threat of enforcement and punishment.

In all the scandals over the past five years, two linchpins stand out, at least to my eye: one, ratings agencies SELL ratings, and two, the SEC is not in an adversarial relationship with those it regulates.

Fixing those two items will have the biggest bang for your regulatory buck.

Or even more hilariously ridiculous is the fact sitting in your living room smoking a specific plant gets people thrown in jail all the time.

The world is farking depressing.
