I've never seen much of Skip Bayless, but why the hate? Is he particularly bad.

Bayless is a provocateur, a contrarian, and he says what he says precisely to get the response he gets.

I doubt he truly believes most of the bullshiat he spouts. He doesn't form an opinion until he hears what everyone else says and then he takes the opposite tack.

Unlike Barkley, I don't need something else in the morning on the air to keep me from watching Bayless. I just don't watch anything with Bayless in it. I have zero respect for that asshole. He is completely and totally unlikeable. I cannot imagine anyone being his friend. So I change the channel. To paraphrase Paul Rudd's character from The 40 Year-Old Virgin, I would rather watch 8 hours of Beautician and the Beast than watch Skip Bayless.

So, at least in my case, Bayless's tactic of being an intentional asshole in order to get viewers to watch and hate, has backfired.

I urge everyone to do the same. Ignore the putz.

They put him on ESPN 1 to force you to change the channel to ESPN 2. So he does serve a useful purpose.

He's the sports world's Armond White, without the erudition or vocabulary.

The only time I have ever seen Skip Bayless not be Skip Bayless was on the 30 for 30 documentary about SMU. He actually showed that he might just be a normal person playing a persona and was actually pretty interesting. But then he popped on ESPN 30 mins later after the show and I realized I dont care if hes the nicest guy in the world, the product he puts out on TV should be considered a crime against humanity and intelligence.

I don't know that I've seen more than 30 minutes of Bayless in my life, but it was enough to know that I'll never get those 30 minutes back. He reminds of an old man that just loves to argue about anything.

Could not have said that better. No idea how that asshat is still on the air - I can't understand how anyone would actually enjoy listening to his vitriol

Anyone tune in - however briefly - to Mike & Mike on Thanksgiving and the day after? Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. Together. On air. My God, I don't think it can possibly get worse than those two asshats on at the same time.

Playing a douchebag on TV doesn't mean you aren't also one for real (See Craig Kilborn), but I agree he's doing a bit of shtick. Going by the name "Skip" is a bit of a giveaway.

No joke. The two most unbearable sports personalities on the same show at the same time. It was painful for about 10 seconds and then I changed the channel.

I have not listened to Mike and Mike since I heard the DP show the very first time. Always wondered if Mike would ever ask Mike straight out if he used steroids or HGH when he played, but I guess I'll never know.

Funny this thread came up, because not two days ago I screamed that Skip Bayless is a moron and changed the channel.

Skip has been blowing loads on air the last few weeks because of tebow's recent success. When tebow called in last week, espn was running a twitter tag that was something like "skip meets tebow". Every morning for the past three weeks on First Take, the first or second story is about tebow. I like tebow and I am happy for his success, but it's nauseating how they are slobbing his knob. The day after the bronco's OT win over the chargers, the first shot of the show was skip grinning.

He is the ultimate troll and it is easy to guess what his opinion is on certain things.

Unfortunately, this has become ESPN's overall modus operandi. Just take a look at the Eagles being named a "dream team", or the whole Tebow thing, or any of a countless number of examples. They're making their own stories so they can debate their own stories. It probably hasn't backfired if you ask the beancounters. I'm in the minority with you, however... gone. They don't care.

To be fair, Vince Young said it first.

No, that changes nothing, and is kinda my point. There was no reason to propagate that sort of stupidity other than to promote hype and future debates. A mid level quarterback, at best, and a few good trades and/or drafts. Nope, only reason they did it was because Vick is "polarizing" and they wanted either the "redemption arc" or its failure, to debate and gain ratings. Rinse, repeat, ad nauseam.

Aren't they supposed to generate some hype? Obviously it can get too far sometimes, but I'm pretty sure ESPN was always supposed to generate some hype.

No, it certainly had nothing to do with the Eagles collecting a bunch of name players this offseason. How many former Pro Bowlers did they add? Yeah, it was a stupid thing for Young to say but ESPN was perfectly justified in jumping all over it. Vince just said what everyone was thinking - the Eagles were going all-in for this season.

Can I just say that as a sports fan and a fan of PBS cooking shows, that I was shocked to learn that Rick and Skip Bayless are brothers. Rick seems like such a laid back and cool guy and Skip seems like a raging arsehole. Don't get me wrong, my brother and I are pretty different. It's just that Skip is such a douchebag that it's hard to believe that they were raised by the same parents.

//of course Rick could be a colossal DB too, but his TV persona doesn't seem to indicate that

I remember reading Bayless' stuff in the San Jose Mercury News and thinking, "Hey, this guy seems to be a pretty good columnist. He's interesting, and seems to know his shiat." (I felt the same way about Stephen A. with his stuff in the Philadelphia Inquirer.)
Then I saw them on ESPN. I swear to Tebow, I said, "This can't be the same guy!"

I can understand why people don't like Mariotti, but I don't find him nearly as blatantly attempting to stir the pot as does Bayless.

Im not going to suggest that this redeems him, but I loved it when Skip called out Chris Broussard for "selling his soul" to get close to Lebron James. Hilarious.
