unlikely: People still play that?

I haven't played it since the full release, but I don't doubt that I will again. *shrug* It's entertaining.

Considering Notch isn't a very adept coder, and had obviously been losing interest in the project, this is a good thing. I still enjoy the game, but the last few updates have been full of half-finished ideas.

I called it just before Minecon.
He needed to gtfo

The people on the internet who describe him primarily as "lazy" will have a field day with this one.

All things considered, the dude made millions. Like, dozens of millions of American dollars.

That's a fact. How about something to add a whole new level to the game? Nah I'll throw in some mushroom cows. And why the hell did he write that thing in Java anyway? That's a stupid language for that.

/it's actually a nice little time waster
//plus my 4 year old daughter loves it.

The primary focus now is a proper Modding API, which makes me very pleased. I'd love to be able to have my server running an official sort of modding system.

As an avid gamer I have to say that I have never played this and don't know of anyone who as. Should I?

When I first saw it I had a bit of a "WTF, an 8-bit 3D world?". But I saw some videos and kind of got the idea and started playing in alpha.

Just recently gave up my original world for the official release.

BUT - there is no linear story. You can build stuff, or (now) you can go beat the dragon, or you can just explore, or mine. If you like a linear game it's not for you. If you like something where the options are completely open, it's pretty awesome.

I believe they have a demo out, I'd say give it a go. Mind the creepers.

One who plays tons of computer games.

Funny thing is, I would've never even heard of this game if not for the memes.

I tried it once and don't believe I am creative enough to play this game. Kudos to those of you that do.... unless I just played it wrong.

That's just the thing, there is no `playing it wrong', you're either going to like it or you aren't, it's certainly not for everyone. It's like a lego set with unlimited legos. Also exploding creatures got mixed in with your legos.

That should improve the game significantly.

If you don't know anyone who has played and you have never played it yourself I'm not sure you can really claim to be an avid gamer.

Are all future updates going to continue to break worlds and mods, causing everyone to start fresh?

That's the only think keeping me from firing it up again.

Because this is the ONE game that everyone knows about? I buy several games a month and stand by my statement.

I don't do a whole lot of building. I just loves me the exploration and spelunking aspects of the game. A neverending cave is too much fun to explore.

On any game development team larger than about 5 people, the lead designer shouldn't also be the lead coder, anyway.

Now he can go back to creating more custom VVVVVV levels!

I'm not weeping tears of goddamn anything. Notch is terrible and should have handed complete control over to Jeb a while ago. The premise is awesome enough, but the fact that every update breaks mods and introduces a ridiculous amount of bugs is pathetic. The shift from beta to 1.0.0 was pretty much just in name only, because the game still feels half-baked and unfinished. I seriously pity anyone who pays full retail price for this "game" as it is right now, but I'll be pleased as punch if Jeb and crew can make it worth it.

/bought it in beta

Not so. Notch's initial development of Minecraft created an exceptional game; his subsequent efforts have been near-useless (except for redstone, a stroke of brilliance).

For the past few months it has certainly seemed as if Jeb is the main Minecraft developer. Guess they're just making it official now.

This. I got on board at the end of Alpha, and while I got my moneys worth for playtime, the development of Minecraft sucks. Even features that have been in the game since Alpha aren't polished (e.g. mine carts), while all the new stuff is pretty half baked. The crafting system has basically been completely neglected in all that time as well.

I second not buy the game in it's current state , wait and see if Jeb can fix things

No, brilliance would have been to include forming redstone into blocks, like we can do with every other ore.

/playing on a PvE server with ~100 on at any given time. The economic and political dynamics the game generates in a community are fascinating

I would love having some scripting language in place for the server, maybe Python. It would be great for user management, among other things. Making the server a bit less of a memory hog would be nice too (although given how large the map can get this may be a necessary evil).

Its a cute clever amateur community type hack-together that reached the kind of insane critical mass that the internet can create. People now expect it to be something else entirely, so fine, hand it to people who can do that.

Yay, I get to be the cool kid.

I played around with Minecraft when it was its very original browser-based version, got bored of it within about 20 minutes, walked away and never looked back. Never watched a creation vid, never watched someone else play around with it, really couldn't give a crap.

/going back to Skyrim now

Every game i get I play it normally first, then after completing, I try on the hardest setting to kill EVERY character in the game it is possible to kill.

Minecraft has no hook for me. Currently killing everyone in new vegas again on hardcore. Might try to kill everyone in skyrim next. If a game just spawns lots of a type I get my count to 100 then move on. I try to kill all the named chars though.

Evil FTW

My 8 year old loves minecraft. I think it is okay. We build together and I've created an ingame adventure for him in which he believes someone is in the server with us. He loves watching youtube for new mods and building ideas.

I really don't understand the development criticism. Wtf do you people want? I really think of you criticize the development of minecraft, you really don't' know shiat about the effort that goes into creating them.

Threads probably dead, but anyway: Notch's M.O. seems to be to work on something until it's "good enough." Once a feature got to the point where it basically worked and any bugs could be fairly easily avoided or classified as features, he went ADD and moved on. Jeb seems like he's much more focused and will do a better job of polishing things up, which is desperately needed. I get that development is hard, but the game has need some refining for a while now. They've added in at least six distinct new features, all of which are at best half finished, while there were still serious deficiencies with existing content. I'm not trying to hate, I love the concept and I've played the game many hours. But to say there's no room for criticism is silly.

2011-12-04 08:25:04 AM
I still play one weekend (total about 16 hours) every 2 months or so. As others have said the latest patches are half-baked.

As for why use Java, I believe that's what his experience is in, and it does allow the game to run on win/mac/linux with very little work on his part.

As a hobbyist game developer, I'm quite envious of his success.
