You would not have to pay me at all and I'd kick that twunt in the gunt.

Only if I can get a remote keylogger on her computer.

I intern'd for a major market network TV news station for free. Even though I was in the sports dept and got to meet a few big-name sports celebs, all it did was convince me I never wanted to work in broadcast TV ever again.

That will guarantee me a job one day! Can I take out an exorbitant loan to pay for this since I can't really afford it upfront?

/I just hope those 1%ers don't get involved and make this seem like a bad investment.

Haven't quite put my finger on why hufnpuffers love this 1%er that used to claim to be a conservative.

Maybe it's true that it's more fun to be evil.

"Fetching Arianna's coffee"

Is that another of these Sex-text Euphamisms the kids are using on their internets?

Huffing a ton of paste... Five grand... cup of coffee...

I still don't forgive that botch for cutting in front of Arnie during the press conference for California governor candidates.

Based on that picture, I'd hit it.

I read that as "Abrianna", now I have a sad.

Fett56: Based on that picture, I'd hit it.

Arianna is an elegant and, yes, sexy woman for her age and position. I particularly love the Greek lilt to her speech. I would offer her one of my notorious foot massages at the end of a long day and see where things go.

Wow, and here I thought that unpaid internships were a particularly egregious form of employee abuse.

Did people miss the part where it was for a charity auction?

Ah, my favorite Gulfstream liberal, even over those common men, Al Gore and John Kerry. Made millions by divorcing a gay Republican oil man - which apparently qualifies her to comment on domestic and foreign affairs as if she were a former head of state - then she got more millions in the AOL buyout, and still didn't pay her bloggers.

I see your income inequality and raise you an epic liberal hypocrisy.

/So nice to write this and not have it wiped by mods like on HuffPo.

Very insightful. You should write a book on strategic thinking.

jagec: Wow, and here I thought that unpaid internships were a particularly egregious form of employee abuse.

Actually, no, they are often fantastic foot-in-the-door opportunities. An extended job interview. The best experience I had by far in law school. It's OK to pay for in-class learning, but if I go to an actual, real-world locale for my learning, I should get paid for that privilege? In this economy? Where lawyers are applying for paralegal jobs?

There are two kinds of people in this world, whiny, entitled farks, and those who make the most of opportunities. I suspect you fall in the first category.

So content creators are paid next-to-nothing for their images and stories AND the IT people are being screwed out of their pay little by little AND all the while Joe Six-pack is scowering the interwebs to find the cheapest possible price for a widget so he doesn't have to go to the widget brick and mortar store where they have the people of his hometown work AND they're laying off workers because they can pay overseas employees pennies on the dollar to make those widgets that are uninspired because content creators can't have the luxury of time to create and/or develop new and more interesting widgets. Add the governments and banks of the world darling everyone over and it's amazing to me that people still wonder what's wrong with the economy.

Yes, since that is the law.
An unpaid intern is only allowed to do "work" that has no value to the corporation (watch us work, read these manuals to learn, etc).

If they do work that has value, then they must be paid.

Why do people not like to follow labor laws and like to take advantage of workers?

I used to enjoy HuffPo, until the forum mods got all fascist and started scrubbing comments they personally didn't like, regardless of whether or not they violated the posting rules. Its a good thing the FARK forums haven't gotten like that.

I dunno, but the whole damn link is NSFW and could use the appropriate tag.

Yes, that IS what they tell people stupid enough to believe it, while laughing their way to the bank with the money that they saved by not hiring actual employees.

My studio stopped doing unpaid internships. Granted, the intern pay isn't amazing, but there's a good reason for this:

Only wealthy kids can do them. And wealthy kids tend to (not always) have poor work ethics. I had a few that couldn't even be bothered to show up on time and liked to stand around. I'd rather not even have an intern than deal with that.

My best interns came from situations where they had to pay their way. One was this amazing girl who left at 4 to go bartend until 2 am, only to come back in at 8. She was grumpy until coffee, but she was always there.

Unpaid internships, or this abomination, ensure that only well-heeled white kids are there to kiss your ass. Fark you huffpo, weed out the deadwood and pay the good kids who actually want to learn.

Ok, but you're wrong. Just because an unpaid internship is better than no internship at all doesn't mean that your employers don't have the obligation to compensate your time and encourage your education. I also did unpaid internships because I had no other choice. Yes, they were good for my career, and you do what you have to do, but there is absolutely no reason for a reputable profitable corporation or firm not to pay for living expenses. Income inequality exists because of an extended form of this kind of thinking. This is better than that, so this is acceptable and good. It's not. Unpaid work is NEVER good.

That's like saying, having peanut butter and tortilla chips for dinner every night is better than starving, so peanut butter and tortilla chips is what I deserve to have for dinner, and anybody should be happy to work full time every day and just be able to barely scrape enough of mama's money together to by tortilla chips and peanut butter for dinner. For half a year. Oddly enough, that's what my unpaid internship was to me, and believe me, it's NOT ok.
