Okay... maybe I missed something in the article but are they saying that it was a painting made by Rembrandt but nobody knew until the x-ray and found ANOTHER Rembrandt under it that was easier to identify or that some other schmoe painted over the Rembrandt?

Do they even have any other evidence that it is indeed a Rembrandt, other than "It sorta looks like he was wearing a similar hat and hairstyle as Rembrandt was in this other self portrait?" Seems pretty flimsy to me.

I believe they base it on the style of painting (brushtrokes/technique), types of paints they were using at a particular time period, etc... as well as actual content. These people are highly trained for this stuff to point of being freaks.
