Fruit juice is glorified sugar water. It is only marginally more healthy than soda.

THIS.

I dont care how real a doctor he was in real life, the minute he steps onto Oprah's stage everything he says is open to question. Drive-by accusation and sensationalism are not science, no matter how well you sell it on TV, Doctor. Same junk with Dr. Drew and his phony baloney profit-off-others-pain scams.

From day one, my son's pediatrician told me that diet soda was better for his body than apple juice.
My son cant stand either, but loves ice water and chocolate milk - which are pretty healthy and nutricious for most people.

Quasar: Guess I should stop making carrot-apple-pear-cucumber juice in the juicer.

Got a juicer two weeks ago and have been making my own veggie & fruit juices. Carrot is surprisingly sweet and really good. Kale is not surprisingly stinky and not so good tasting. I still use the kale and just put a bunch of other stuff with it. Apple juice from a juicer is completely different from the pasteurized, clarified stuff in the bottle.

Love cucumbers, but the juice? - not so much.

I drank it in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink Jamaican Rum
It tastes just like Coca Cola, C-O-L-A cola

It rotted my teeth and made them turn green
I asked the wench its name and in a dark brown voice
She said Soda, S-O-O-Oda, Soda

Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy
So the weight that I gained nearly broke my spine
Oh my Soda, S-S-O-oda.

My fat arse has been avoiding fruit juice for years, and I've caught so much farking flack from coworkers, family, friends - "But fruit juice is good for you!"

Riighhtt.

You ever read the label on that shiat? Just look at the amount of carbohydrates in one serving. And then compare that to the amount of vitamins, minerals, fiber and proteins in it. It really IS just glorified masquerading-as-healthy sugar water. You may as well pop a multivitamin and drink a bottle of Coke; you'll be getting even more vitamins that way.

Apple/Carrot/fresh Ginger was my favorite, back in the halcyon days of juicing.

What the hell you mean that there are no guidelines for the maximum amount of arsenic in fruit juice?!!??!?
Kids can get plenty of arsenic eating dirt at their local playground with pressure treated wood. In fact I recommend it. Still safer than most cities tap water.

Doesn't matter how the juice is made, the sugar is still there. At least if you let it ferment, it won't rot your teeth.

The anti-soft drink league often glosses over how much sugar (and acid) there is in juice, even or especially natural unadulterated juice. An orange juice will do a lot more damage than a cola.

They make a big deal of the phosphoric acid in a Coke, but you never hear them complain about an organic smoothie.

In most cases, the amount of acid is low enough to not do serious harm unless you drink way too much of the beverage and don't brush or flush the acid. Thus, it is a good idea not to drink anything but water or milk before bed.

Here's a good list of many beverages and their pH (low-acid, high-less acid, basic).

A pH of 7 is neutral. Presumably the brilliant teeth of many South Sea Islanders was due to their consumption of large amounts of coconut milk. Coconut meat is high calorie and full of the wrong sort of fats, but it's milk is pH-balanced. No doubt one reason coconut is used in natural-product based shampoo and cosmetics. Better to wear a lot of coconut than eat it, I guess. Mmmm ... Bounty bars!

The same can be said of all juice. It's liquid sugar without all that pesky fiber and such. Your body barely even registers that you took in food when you drink the stuff.

Sensationalism at its finest. It's not the video games, lazy culture, drug-pushing snack companies that are making our kids fat. IT'S CLEARLY APPLE JUICE!

First it's "Drink apple juice instead of soda, because at least it's fruit." Now it's APPLES ARE EVIL! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! I heard the only difference between drinking fruit juice and fruit is that it has less fiber.
I'm sure the apple farmers are going to love this.

I love that. "It teaches kids to like sweet things". It's not that we're programmed from birth to prefer sweet things as opposed to bitter things. No, it's because of APPLE JUICE. APPLE JUICE IS THE DEVIL!

Oh sure fluoride is good for you in tap water(not), but you must be a greedy dentist or some billionaire corporate mogul who enjoys dumping toxic waste from the aluminum smelter or smokestacks of the fertilizer plant into peoples drinking water to avoid the toxic waste disposal fee's.
People drinking the water in New Orleans have a 'death by cancer' wish. That water is some of the most polluted shiat in North America. Lake Erie has also been compared to a septic tank. The waste of coal burning(fly Ash) has so much chemical/metals contamination that educated people do not want to drink any water near the ash dump and hope that the scrubbers in the stacks are working properly.

Believe it or not, coconut oil really isn't that bad for you. Neither is saturated fat in general.

Too much sugar, though, will definitely cause problems.

So after taking all arguements into consideration I went "Hey wait a minute," looked it up and made a phone call - turns out most of the water districts where I grew up and where I now live don't put fluoride in the tap water to begin with. Awesome!

Yeah. It's rather vexing that it's considered such a universally healthy thing and soda is absolutely demonized, even though it's got similar sugar compared to soda. Some types have substantial vitamins but ones you probably don't need more of (who gets scurvy nowadays??), and others have nothing of anything.

highendmighty: From day one, my son's pediatrician told me that diet soda was better for his body than apple juice.

You missed a huge grand fight at my infant's doctor between the doctor, myself vs my wife. She said that she was buying apple juice for the kid. I went "Like heck you are - that stuff is awful" (ok - more forcefully than that). The doctor went through what I considered a good diet for the infant when he stopped breast feeding and then what the wife thought. He looked at her and told her that I was going to be the one making the menus. All heck broke loose. Apparently my "sainted" MIL told the wife what to feed the kid. Wrong as usual. Apparently a 1st school teacher in rural KY knows more than a pediatrician who interned at Mass Gen.

That last bit is the most important part. If it tricks your body into thinking it has no calories, you probably shouldn't consume it.

TofuTheAlmighty: Fruit juice is glorified sugar water. It is only marginally more healthy than soda.

THIS

Fruit juice isn't good for you.

It's a soft drink with a small amount of vitamins *added*. Since most are destroyed during pasteurization, it's added back in.

Drink what you want in moderation, drink mostly water. Take a vitamin or eat a well balanced diet (ideally).

I gave up on all fruit juice years ago... if I'm having sugar water, might as well enjoy a soda. I've had one soda in 2011 so far. Well likely 1/2 given the size of the glass.

After a few months, you honestly don't miss either. Your body looses the craving for the sugar and life goes on.

I'd rather enjoy a good cookie, ice cream, pie, or a cake than drink sugar water. Those at least are satisfying.

Not for adults. Children under 4 aren't supposed to drink fluoridated water, but almost no parents know that. Thus the "speckled teeth" comment.
