I know a fish when I see one.
This is just another wave of Cubans on the way because of the wonderful news about our unemployment rate.

/Good economic news always brings them in.

I read that as Amanda Jellyfish, and thought Bart Simpson prank call.

"I need a man to jellyfish!"

What is jellyfishing? Sounds slimy.

In the unusual collective noun department, a group of jellyfish can also be called a 'smack'.

/does not have a reason on the planet for having retained this information.

Let me give the news a newsflash: this happens every year on the Southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts and moon jellies are harmless.

that pic looks a lot like a spot on the beach behind our hotel in corpus christi back in july...on the bay, not the gulf...didn't see any jellies at the gulf beaches we went to, just a lot of stingrays. that was neat! i've seen them at aquariums, never in the wild

FTA: "Moon jellies, which are round, pinkish and pulsating, can stretch up to 2 feet in diameter"

Okay, that raised an eyebrow.

harmless you say? the description above may not say anything about them stinging, but harm will be done if i encounter a 2 ft diameter jellyfish i'll injure myelf trying to run out of the water, and probably destroy my vocal chords screaming like a little girl!

I actually was wondering what the proper collective noun for a group of jellyfish was. Thanks.

They sting like a bee and yes I did go hoarse screaming like a little girl when I was a teenager and accidentally put both of my hands through one as I was diving through a breaking wave in the surf.

We visited there in August and it was still a mess. My 7 year old takes his first step ever into the ocean and gets stung and didn't go in the water the rest of the day. My 3 year kept swimming and getting stung and didn't care a bit.

The weirdest thing was swimming and having your hand hit one of them when you didn't expect it. Such a weird feeling.

I went on a catamaran snorkeling excursion in Key Largo at the end of August. I've never seen so many moon jellyfish in my life, from the size of a quarter to 1 an a half feet. Some brave souls jumped in the water and in less than 5 minutes were swimming frantically back to the catamaran. Some guy in the water was trying to convince his 7 year old to jump in, "Jimmy come on, it's like a fire ant sting." Now, I've never been stung by a fire ant, but I can imagine it's very painful. It was extremely hot in August so when I saw a clearing I jumped in, mentally preparing myself for the pain but I was lucky. I can't say I enjoyed the snorkeling adventure as much as I wanted to, but the adrenaline rush of swimming in the ocean surrounded by moon jellyfish was crazy.

A couple of years ago I went on a snorkel trip out of Biscayne National park. On the way out the captain warned us they had been having big problems with moon jellies. I am always ready to go and first in because if I don't after a few minutes mal de mer begins. As soon as I hit the water I started screaming and thrashing about. After 30 seconds of looking at my horrified fellow snorkelers on the boat I started laughing. Wish I had used my camera to get a shot of their faces. Captain was not amused.

This is one of the most memorable passages in Bill Bryson's "In A Sunburned Country":

"In 1992 a young man in Cairns, ignoring all the warning signs, went swimming in the Pacific waters at a place called Holloways Beach. He swam and dove, taunting his friends on the beach for their prudent cowardice, and then began to scream with an inhuman sound. It is said that there is no pain to compare with it. The young man staggered from the water, covered in livid whiplike stripes wherever the jellyfish's tentacles had brushed across him, and collapsed in quivering shock. Soon afterward emergency crews arrived, inflated him with morphine, and took him away for treatment. And here's the thing. Even unconscious and sedated, he was still screaming."

Florida somehow reminds me of those kiddie horror/bizarre shows in the 80s and 90s where all the strange stuff happens in just one place and the residents either live with the strangeness or move out.
