I don't think the Australian system isn't bad at all, I've seen many friends emigrate to Australia because of it's clear and ease to apply for an immigrant visa, sort of like the Canadians, or the British.

I have a very personal example of that, my brother is a naturalized citizen of the USA, so is my mom. However, since my mom became naturalized AFTER I was 21y/o I have to wait over 5 years for a GREEN CARD (not even citizenship).

In the meantime, I applied for a Canadian Skilled Workers visa (no need for a sponsor), Canadian Immigration service saw my profile (IT with a Masters, spanish, english and french skills) and said "Here's your visa, welcome to Canada".
