The school didn't ban Christmas cards, they banned the exchange of Christmas cards and gifts IN CLASS.

You're at school to learn. Exchange gifts on your own time, like before or after school or during lunch, like the article stated.

2011-12-02 09:06:35 AM
Students can, however, exchange gifts and cards before and after school and during lunch, district spokesman Clint Bond said.

THE HORROR

RexTalionis: You're at school to learn. Exchange gifts on your own time, like before or after school or during lunch, like the article stated.

Then the school should have said that, instead of

"For example, if students are allowed to exchange cards or small trinkets, the district would be required to allow a student to distribute a religious message with the gift or card," the memo says.

"In other words, the school district cannot prohibit the distribution of unsolicited religious material directly to students if it allows other personal messages to be distributed during school activities held during the school day."

This isn't about wasting time, it's some idiot PC administrator worrying about a nonexistent non-Christian suing them because they were *gasp* offended by something that is a national holiday in the US.

smooshie: This isn't about wasting time, it's some idiot PC administrator worrying about a nonexistent non-Christian suing them because they were *gasp* offended by something that is a national holiday in the US.

That's not what that means. That means if they don't ban the exchange of christmas cards in class, they CANNOT stop a child from, say, handing out Chick tracts during homeroom. Or fliers to come here Jehova's Witnesses talk about armageddon or whatever it is they do. Or ANYTHING ELSE.

SIT YOUR ASSES DOWN, STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR RELIGIONS, AND DO YOUR FARKING MATH PROBLEMS.

kingoomieiii: hear

ugh.

The point is, legally, if they want to stop proselytizing in class, they have to stop ALL proselytizing in class, even if it's innoculous.

For the religious right, "religious freedom" means the right to never have to stop talking about YOUR religion, while simultaneously never having to hear about anyone else's.

The only thing that annoyed me about the holidays in elementary school...

All the Christmas-celebrating students (15-20?) made gingerbread houses and got candy canes.

All the Hannukah-celebrating students (3) cut out giant yellow stars of David and didn't get any candy.

This. There are multiple holidayb that good old fashioned American Conservative Patriotic Christians celebrate this time of year. Brewer is unhappy because he says the district is essentially making it impossible to celebrate Christmas -- and other holidays -- at school.

Good. Being in schools, I am tired of teachers wasting class time on holidays. The activities are worthless and often spread fictions of other celebrations and peoples or the historicity of events. Still, this is not "impossible to celebrate" what with exchanging gifts and cards everywhere but the classroom, being able to use the same seasonal greetings, and, more the point, having decorations and parties.

This is more pressing to me, though. Students are allowed to proselytize, have religious iconography, have religious texts, etc.. However, the student is not allowed to be disruptive. Banning the exchange of gifts and cards on the basis of concern for religious messages, which are perfectly permissible for students to have and exchange, provides a good argument for this being a First Amendment violation rather than a reasonable action.
