It's too bad they can't keep at least part of it open and in 1960's/1970's condition as a shrine/museum to malls - how many are left that still look like that? Could also house a Blues Brothers museum. God knows it's a centerpiece to both, almost deified because of the movie.

That's too bad because there was a lot of space in that mall.

2011-12-02 10:49:51 AM
That mall has been going to be torn down "any day now" for 30 years, but the town is too broke to pay for it. I've got more money than Harvey.

It's not a shrine to anything anymore. It's a decaying, rotting, urban ruin. Trees grow through the main square. A lot of the building has been damaged by fire, roof collapses and vegetation growth. Very little of the original signage, or anything else of value, has escaped vandals hands. It's just a rotting shell of a building, which happens when nobody takes care of anything for 30 years. Oh by the way, Harvey is not one of the better parts of Chicago, either.

You can find some very creepy yet oddly fascinating YouTube videos of urban adventurers going in there.

They should record the demolition and use it as a sequence in Blues Brothers 3: Night of the Living Jake.

IIRC, the reason they used it in the movie is because it was about to be demolished in 1978

There are enough buildings in actual Detroit that would qualify (I know, I know, "That's the joke").

Illinois received $169 million in federal disaster cleanup funds after the remnants of Hurricane Ike spawned flooding around the state in 2008. Along with the Dixie Square demolition, some of that money has been parceled out to Southland communities for storm sewer projects and purchasing and rehabbing foreclosed homes.

So money meant for disaster cleanup is not going to cleaning up any disasters? Awesome job there guys.

/lots of space in this mall

Future generations will never get this one. Not just because Oldsmobile went away in 2004, but because these days new models are introduced throughout the year, instead of just in the fall.

And I couldn't even get a loan from FEMA to help cover my insurance deductible after Hurricane Wilma blew half my roof off. But the lady down the street with no insurance got FEMA to pay for a whole new roof.

Not to mention that I've never, in my 42 years, ever seen a mall that had a car dealership in it before or since.

2011-12-02 12:36:59 PM
No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!

Is History Channel still making any "Life After People" segments? Because they could use the mall for that.
