Fun fact: Before we started invading,Saddam Hussein's Iraq was the least restrictive of any middle eastern country (except Israel because joos) when it came to women's rights - women could drive unaccompanied, go to school, become doctors and lawyers and even (lower-level) politicians, Women could vote (sort of - they were expected to vote how their husband told them to vote), and they could even live their lives without getting married and suffer no official sanctions (kind of like interracial marriage in the US in the 70's - no laws against it anymore, but still a social stigma).

Now, not so much. The lack of loyalty to what passes for a central government in Iraq has led to many ultra-conservative Islamic fundamentalists to take it upon themselves to put women in their place, and there are little or no repercussions anymore for the mistreatment of women.

I read about this somewhere else last night. Someone there said (about the no more virgins part) "dang, what kind of test do they have to take to get a driver's license?"

I have no respect for saudi males nor their traditions or customs (I extend that contempt for many middle eastern, persian, asian, south asian, southeast asian and african males too). Just because something is tradition doesn't mean it's right. And islam hasn't done jack shiat to help women, all it's done is be used to reinforce and legitimize the mysoginistic maltreatment of women.

We in the US are supposed to have the best and brightest scientists in the world. I wish they would get on the ball and develop fuel sources and technologies so that we don't have to depend on middle eastern oil. I would love us to be able to say "Fark you, women-hating asswipes".
