Not sure if he's making that thoughtful a decision, but I would like to see how reactions would/wouldn't change if he took the Confederate flag down and replaced it with one from the Republic of Congo.

I agree with his stance in a couple ways (free speech, what symbols really mean, etc.) but still, dude the Nazis stole a pretty neat symbol used by people and cultures around the world and nobody uses it now except, well, Nazis.

Sure, that sucks if you liked the symbol but life isn't fair. The flag, which could be associated with state's rights, self determination, southern pride, etc. is commonly used by white supremacists and crazy racists. Such is life.

On the other hand, it's neat to find a Southern black guy who I could probably make explode with my "Sherman was the best General in the Civil War and Lee was a hack inferior to most of his subordinates" argument.

Slave owners were the first Americans to consider black folks full fledged human beings.

Kid seems to be a thinker, I'll give him that. FTA: "He said he's unhappy about such things as labels, and he doesn't like the term "African-American," which makes him feel like "a half-citizen," since he wasn't born in Africa."

2011-12-02 09:35:55 AM
The civil war was not about slavery. It was about states' rights...

/ ...to encourage and allow slavery

Too bad it wasn't a reverse Pirate Flag. That'd be way too cool.

"The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery." -- First two sentences of the Georgia Declaration of Seccession,

"In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin."
-- First two paragraphs of the Mississippi Declaration of Seccession

"We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable." -- From the Texas Declaration of Seccession

"In the present case, that fact is established with certainty. We assert that fourteen of the States have deliberately refused, for years past, to fulfill their constitutional obligations, and we refer to their own Statutes for the proof.

"The Constitution of the United States, in its fourth Article, provides as follows: "No person held to service or labor in one State, under the laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labor, but shall be delivered up, on claim of the party to whom such service or labor may be due."

"This stipulation was so material to the compact, that without it that compact would not have been made. The greater number of the contracting parties held slaves, and they had previously evinced their estimate of the value of such a stipulation by making it a condition in the Ordinance for the government of the territory ceded by Virginia, which now composes the States north of the Ohio River."
-- From the South Carolina Declaration of Seccession

Anyone who says it wasn't about slavery is either a liar or a fool.

You mean a black college student with some common sense?

So in your experience black college students don't have "common sense"? Let me guess - they're brainwashed by democrats?

Well congrats to this kid, he's the new "but there are black people that like the rebel flag too!" poster child for every white supremacist redneck on the internet. It's begun in earnest.

He's a visionary. All we need now is a few hundred more like him to do the same thing until the symbolism of that flag will be meaningless and we can stop having stupid debates on it.

There is a farking Nazi 3rd Reich flag hanging in an apartment in downtown Portland that you can see in their loving room. Every day I walk by it I'm still surprised how much of a moron people can be. Then I read Fark and remember there are even worse morons out there.

There's a black dude here in Columbia with a big old redneck pickup who has a flagpole mounted in the bed with a 10 foot confederate flag flying from it. Love that guy

There's this dude who lives in my friends' (very very affluent) neighborhood. He's black. He's Jewish. He's an active member of the Sons of the Confederacy. He flies three flags in his yard: USA, Confederate, and Israel.

He's actually a pretty cool dude with a great sense of humor and irony. He says he catches some flack from both sides over his choice in extracurricular activities but has always kept the motto: "It's a free country; why not have some fun with it?"

I like it. If anything will water-down (and annoy) white supremacists, it'd be a black man embracing one of their favorite icons.

Oh, and FTA: ...and he doesn't like the term "African-American," which makes him feel like "a half-citizen," since he wasn't born in Africa.

A lot more of the black kids around Atlanta are skateboarding and wearing skinny jeans, and the white kids are all true playas for real. Culture swap.

There was a black guy on Penn & Teller's Bullsh*t! show that marched around his neighborhood in confederate uniform and waiving the confederate flag. I think he said it was to "honor his ancestors."

Yeah, I don't know if this is a movement to remove the racism from it so we can all not hear about every time one is put up, or it's just stirring up the ol' hornets' nest.

I just don't want to ever hear about it again.

"Them Nazis ain't all crazy. Whole lot of people just can't seem to fit in to where things seem to be going. Like you, CJ. See, the Black race can't afford you no more. There used to be a time, we'd see someone like you singin', clownin', yassuh-bossin'... and we wouldn't do anything. Folks liked that. You were good. Homey kind of n*gg*r. When they needed somebody to mistreat, call a name or two, they paraded you. Reminded them of the good old days. Not no more. The day of the Geechee is gone, boy. And you're going with it. "

When I look at this flag, I don't see racism. I see respect, Southern pride," he said. "This flag was seen as a communication symbol" during the Civil War.

Yes, it told others, "I love enslaving black people so much I'm willing to rip our country in half."
