In the sense that RIAA members exploit the hell out of artists, he's right.

Often based overseas, these websites are called "rogue sites" because they flout U.S. law and face zero legal consequences for their criminal activity.

Ah, yes, the old, "We should enforce our laws overseas! Those damn heathens need our guidance anyway!"

Once again, it's time for us to revisit what intellectual property protections truly mean, what purpose they serve, and how we need to change the system to serve that purpose. That purpose, by the way, is "the promotion of the useful arts".

Shorten terms, reduce protections, strengthen the public domain and fair use. Make it easier to defend against IP claims by rightsholders.

What if you infringe the copyright on child porn?

BizarreMan: What if you infringe the copyright on child porn?

It's a prerequisite for being published by the National Review.

BizarreMan: What if you infringe the copyright on child porn?

If you infringe on the copyright of child porn then you are causing huge financial damages to the producers of said product and hurting the industry. Thus reducing the abuse of children.

Time to occupy Congress. These people are off the rails.

I'd love to know where they come up with the "billion dollar a year industry" figure.

Marcus Aurelius: Time to occupy Congress. These people are off the rails.

The Occupiers should have been doing that instead of Wall Street from the beginning.

BizarreMan: What if you infringe the copyright on child porn?

What if I download a copy of that rock album with the naked prepubescent girl as the album art? Wait, is that considered "porn" or "art"? Was it art when it was produced, but porn nowadays? Would it be civil, criminal, or both if I torrent it? If it's considered CP, wouldn't law enforcement then have to go after the record label for producing and distributing it?

/yay, coffee?

Even the NRO is against SOPA? Why the hell is it still alive and kicking? Oh right, our corporate overlords.

kittyhas1000legs: The Occupiers should have been doing that instead of Wall Street from the beginning.

Occupy DC has been there pretty much since the beginning. The general movement might be called "Occupy Wall Street", but they're occupying things completely unrelated to Wall Street. Well, if you consider Congress to be separate from Wall Street.

Now, if you're saying that the Occupiers should take over the houses of Congress and refuse to let the business of government proceed until they feel that the concerns of most Americans are being taken into account, well, I won't disagree with you.

We cannot have this. This will create an unfair, level playing field.

it is unobjectionable to compare. It is unfair to liken.

My concern

What if other countries start using the DNS system to try and seize US websites. Say for example China decides that CNN is telling to many dissident stories in violation of their law and so seizes the domain.

This seizing of foreign websites because they might infringe US law is a weapon that has great potential to be used against us. If it starts happening we will end up with a fractured DNS system.

What bothers most people is that possession can and is in some jurisdictions worse than child molestation.

Try arguing this IRL and see if you can maky any friends. There are people who would like to see those in possession killed.

It's going to go a lot like this:

"Hey, I only get a 404 from thepiratebay.org." *Googles Pirate Bay IP address and pastes it into the address bar*

Hey, look, that entire bill is almost useless to stop actual infringement!

The real problem with the bill is that it's another effort by the industry to shift the cost burden of going after infringement from them to the government.

I don't know for certain where their 'facts' came from, but these 'facts' do appear to be well covered in santorum.

Politics woulds be so much more approachable if every Congressman or candidate was made to wear a jacket or vest displaying the logos of the major donor corporations (or an American flag to represent individual donors) scaled with the percentage of donation.

That way, when they spoke, we'd know who was talking.

The RIAA and MPAA are correct. Copyright theft is a crime. Sending teenagers to prison for 4 years or fining them 200 million dollars is just crazy. Suing them for 25k per song shared is equally insane, and the only people who can't see that are the people the RIAA has paid for.
