I don't see why they had to be knitted... Would have been more efficient to have some sort of insulating, removable spray-foam. Just coat them with it and be done. Then cut it off when not needed. Could use silicon or some sort of petrol-based pol... eh... uh... OOooooh... Yeah, knitted is cool.

subby here, yeah, they didn't need them in the end but they use them for training and emergency kits so they do get used eventually
