I have a great idea. Let's get rid of those stupid child labor laws and fire expensive union janitors in our schools and hire these kids to work cleaning the schools for a below-min-wage "training wage" so they can help their families out and learn in advance their proper place in future society.

I spent a few months living in the stylish yet affordable hotel Acura Integra.

It sucked at first, but after a couple weeks you learned places where you could and could not park, who might let me run an extension cord for a disk heater, etc.

In the end, it was quite liberating. When you realize that everything you need to survive is within 5 feet of you, and you can just *go* somewhere (assuming you have some gas) and not have to worry about packing.. It's kinda cathartic.

/Also good to pare down to your bare essentials sometimes. It is amazing the stuff you think you need, versus what you actually NEED.

He just needs to work harder, the lazy scum. Look at him, he even has two kids who could be working on the school's janitorial staff at half the regular wage and have TWO incomes, or they could give up those two incomes and just live underneath the school boiler! They make me sick.

Hmm, while the depression is pretty high in the modern pic, we haven't quite hit this famous photograph. While don't we keep congress in session, give more tax cuts to the corporations, and pepper spray some more protesters?

Likewise here. Summer of 1991 I semi-voluntarily did the same thing (except in a VW van -- kudos to you for pulling it off in a subcompact). Parking was a breeze, I worked at the phone co. and it was a 24/7 operation so it never raised an eyebrow. Corporate gym on-site for showering.

I still remember the satori experience of waking up one of the first mornings ... curtains flapping in the warm Southern California breeze, wind-up alarm clock rousing my from my slumber, and the soothing thought of "I have everything that I need for free" as I pissed in the sink.

... but I'd never want to do it with a family; nor involuntarily.

I didn't realize the poverty rate was so high.

From Wikipedia:
The US Census declared that in 2010 15.1% of the general population lived in poverty

Obviously in my bubble of daily experience, I see many fewer than 15% in poverty, but in general 1 or 2 people out of every 10 are going to be living below the poverty line. That's farking mind blowing.

To make it worse, it's almost a 50% increase from 2000 when it was hovering around 11%. This past decade has been devastating for this country.

If it was a troll, it's not a bad effort.

If you are serious, then you, sir, are a weasel-like smeghead who thrills to the sound of his own thin tinny voice and keyboard clicks as they echo off the cold unforgiving basement walls of his parent's house.

You damn entitled youngsters. When I was a kid, we didn't even get to sleep in cars. We just had a sleeping bag we made out of asbestos and broken glass. And 4 of us had to share it. For heat, we had to run behind cars and warm ourselves in the exhaust. And forget your fancy canned food. We got our nutrients from chewing old cigarette butts.

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: The Fear Factory version (with Numan) is a freaking amazing cover of that song. (new window)

Damn, that's pretty awesome. Funny, the driver reminds me of "Mayhem" for some reason.

As for the article, I'll tell you right now that between Florida's undocumented workers (who would leave in droves were it not freaking winter everywhere else) and our undocumented 30% unemployment rate, I bet it's going to get worse before it gets better. So many people moved here for so long, and yet there's no real work or manufacturing if you don't want to ruin your adult body picking produce for minimum wage. Most of the money here is tied up in Social Security or in the 1%'s summer homes. Whorelando has *nothing* to offer but a warm winter, and easily half of the homeless we have in our area are just the usual annual "snowbird" homeless who have been coming down to winter at our beaches for decades. Last weekend I was accosted by more panhandlers and grifters in one night than I have seen in years. I finally got fed up and started screaming at the obvious ones. Just because I'm not wearing rags (yet) doesn't mean I have any more money than they do; hell, they get more at an exit with a cardboard sign in an hour than I can get legitimately in a friggin' week.

But it could be worse.

I know a girl in Colorado who had been living in her car for the past two years, even in winter. This year she opted to stay with a psycho boyfriend instead :(

Crunchy Frog: fark, the YMCA they're talking about is about 100 yards from my house. Holy balls, this is sad.

In about 10-15 years we are going to have a serious problem with rioting youths. All these kids, being brought up in the grip of poverty while society around them flaunts ostentatious consumption and teases them with dreams of fame and fortune but never truly giving them the chance to climb much further than the caste they were born into, will become the new punk generation when they grow old enough to realize the dream they've been fed is forever out of their reach.

Letting these families slip from the middle class into poverty will lead to a long term problem for them unless something is done to make sure these kids have a fair chance at success. That means not only education, but a place to stay and food to eat. Especially the newly-homeless, like those profiled in the article, need immediate help to prevent further slippage.

Maybe it means more shelters. Maybe it means more programs in school for these kids. It certainly should include protections for families to stay together rather than get torn apart, which is one of the biggest fears of the parents interviewed in the article. Whatever it takes, the long view must be kept in mind. We can't become a welfare state, but we should try to help where we can. It benefits everyone to keep people afloat, and it hurts everyone when people lose everything.

I've never understood why people go through the trouble of...

1.) Putting people on ignore but continuing to read posts by them (I don't know if the ignore features are relatively new, and the old system didn't allow you to ignore replies or comments directed at someone you've ignored?)
2.) Feel the need to publicly announce how glad they are that they have X on ignore

'OH MAN! I'M SOOOO GLAD I'M *STILL* IGNORING FARK_GUY_ROB! I JUST READ ONE OF HIS POSTS AND IT'S SOOOO BAD, IT TOTALLY MAKES ME HAPPY I'M IGNORING HIM! YUP! NO SENSE IN FEEDING THE TROLLS. I'M JUST GONNA KEEP ON NOT PAYING ANY ATTENTION TO FARK_GUY_ROB!

- Okay, that probably came off more harsh than I had intended....but I think the gist of it is a valid point. Maybe it's my imagination, but I feel like I've been seeing a lot of these types of posts recently too.
